Guillaume Martin

Laurent Schenck

Trump Downplays Threat Of ‘Gift’ From North Korea: Maybe It’s A ‘Beautiful Vase’

President Trump told reporters he would handle whatever “present” North Korea’s Kim Jong Un plans to send.

President Trump did not seem concerned Tuesday when asked about the threat of a “Christmas present” from North Korea if the U.S. doesn’t roll back economic sanctions on the country by the end of the year.

“Maybe it’s a nice present,” Trump told reporters at an event at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. “Maybe it’s a present where he sends me a beautiful vase, as opposed to a missile test.”

Pyongyang imposed an end-of-year deadline for concessions from the U.S. earlier this month, but the Trump administration has given no sign that it plans to give in to the pressure campaign. The U.S. wants North Korea to give up its entire nuclear arsenal before removing the sanctions.

Dealing with North Korea’s nuclear ambitions has been one of Trump’s top foreign policy priorities, and he has held a series of meetings with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un to try to negotiate a solution.

It’s unclear exactly what the “Christmas gift” is that North Korea is threatening, but NPR’s Geoff Brumfiel laid out a few of the options on Monday, including launching a rocket with a payload into space, conducting an underground nuclear test, or testing a long-range missile capable of reaching the United States or its territories.

On Tuesday, Trump did not elaborate on how the U.S. would respond if North Korea were to conduct another missile test.

“We’ll find out what the surprise is, and we’ll deal with it very successfully. Let’s see what happens. Everybody’s got surprises for me — but let’s see what happens,” Trump said. “I handle them as they come along.”

Super Serena aces Female Athlete of the Decade honor

Serena Williams dominated the decade, on the court and in conversation.

There were, to begin with, the dozen Grand Slam single titles-no other woman had more than three over the past 10 seasons-and the three and a half years in a row at No 1 in the WTA rankings.

And then there was the celebrity status that transcended tennis, making everything she did and said newsworthy, whether it was the triumphs and trophies and fashion statements or the disputes with tournament officials, the magazine covers or the Super Bowl ad with a message about women’s power, the birth of her daughter or the health scare that followed.

Still winning matches and reaching Grand Slam finals into her late 30s, still mattering as much as ever, Williams was selected by Associated Press as the Female Athlete of the Decade on Saturday after a vote by AP member sports editors and AP beat writers.

“When the history books are written, it could be that the great Serena Williams is the greatest athlete of all time,” said Stacey Allaster, CEO of the WTA from 2009-15 and now chief executive for professional tennis at the US Tennis Association, which runs the US Open.

“I like to call it the ‘Serena Superpowers’-that champion’s mindset. Irrespective of the adversity and the odds that are facing her, she always believes in herself.

“Whether it was health issues; coming back; having a child; almost dying from that-she has endured it all and she is still in championship form,” Allaster said. “Her records speak for themselves.”

Four-time Olympic champion gymnast Simone Biles, the 2019 AP Female Athlete of the Year, finished second to Williams in voting for the decade honor.

Five-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Katie Ledecky was third.

Two ski racers were next, with Lindsey Vonn finishing fourth and Mikaela Shiffrin fifth.

Three of Williams’ five AP Female Athlete of the Year awards came during the last decade-in 2013, 2015 and 2018. She also won in 2002 and 2009.

“She’s been my idol growing up,” Biles said.

“She’s remained humble. She’s stayed true to herself and her character and I think that’s really neat about an athlete. Once you start winning, some get cocky, but she’s stayed true to herself, win or lose.”

It’s the defeats that seem to drive Williams, helping propel her to heights rarely reached by any athlete in any sport.

“Whenever I lose, I get more determined, and it gives me something more to work toward,” Williams said in a 2013 interview with AP.

“I don’t get complacent, and I realize I need to work harder and I need to do better and I want to do better-or I wouldn’t be playing the game.”

With a best-in-the-game serve, powerful groundstrokes and relentless court coverage, Williams has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, more than anyone else in her sport’s professional era, which began in 1968.

More than half came from 2010-19: four at Wimbledon, three apiece at the US Open and Australian Open, and two at the French Open. That includes a run of four in a row from the US Open in 2014 through Wimbledon in 2015, her second selfstyled “Serena Slam”.

Williams also was the runner-up another seven times at major tournaments over the past decade, including four of the seven she’s entered since returning to the tour after having a baby in 2017.

In all, she made the final at 19 of the 33 majors she entered during the decade, a nearly 58 percent rate.

Traditional Chinese medicine culture increasingly prevalent among residents: survey

The prevalence of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) culture among Chinese people reached 15.34 percent in 2018, up nearly 2 percentage points from 2017, showed a survey released by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (NATCM).

The survey included over 80,000 permanent residents aged between 15 and 69 in 31 provincial-level regions, covering questions about knowledge of TCM culture, reading of TCM-related materials, and confidence in TCM, among other aspects.

It is estimated that there are more than 158 million people across the country with basic knowledge of TCM culture, according to the department.

"TCM prevalence in poor areas rose remarkably in 2018 from 2016 at a rate higher than the national average," said Zha Dezhong, an official from the NATCM, adding that the gap between urban and rural areas has been narrowing.

The NATCM has pledged to increase policy and financial support for rural and western regions and extensively hold activities such as TCM culture promotion, health services and free medical consultations.

International train inspires new ‘Lost’ blockbuster

For train travel enthusiasts, the international train K3 – which goes from Beijing to Moscow via Ulan Bator – could provide an epic journey with scenic views.

Recently, director-actor Xu Zheng revealed the train ride — which takes six days, five nights to travel over 7,800 kilometers — inspired his upcoming film Lost in Russia.

As the third installment of the blockbuster franchise Lost In, the new tale is about a businessman’s comedic journey to travel with his estranged mother to Russia. In a trip full of surprises, the protagonist experiences a string of accidents, including rescuing his mother from wild bears as well as being hung out of the running train under extremely cold weather.

The film has recently announced it will create an Imax version that will be released on 660 Imax screens when it hits domestic theaters on Jan 25, the first day of the 2020 Spring Festival.

Huang Meiying, a Shanghai native born in 1950, plays the mother of Xu’s character, and Yuan Quan, recently known for the disaster blockbuster The Captain, stars as the wife of Xu’s role.

Xu said at a recent promotional event that he wishes the movie will prompt thoughts about mother-son relationships, as he believes “how you get along with your mother decides how you get along with other people in your life and career”.

Silicon Valley honors Chinese painter

A 103-year-old Chinese painter’s life story has been preserved and presented to the public thanks to the efforts of a museum in Silicon Valley.

Los Altos History Museum recently interviewed Hou Beiren, a renowned contemporary Chinese painter in California, for an oral-history program that aspires to preserve the artist’s history and raise awareness of cultural diversity in the United States.

“The United States needs people who can help bring the best of their culture to the country,” the museum’s executive director Elizabeth Ward says.

“And he is an example of someone who has brought a wonderful piece of Chinese culture to more public awareness in the United States. It’s a very important contribution to our cultural life here.”

Hou was born in Liaoning province in 1917. He moved to the US from Hong Kong in 1956 and has since lived in Los Altos in northern Silicon Valley.

For more than 60 years, he has received worldwide acclaim for his signature “splash-ink-and-color” style that fuses Eastern brush painting with Western impressionism.

Hou’s works have been exhibited and collected in the US and China, including by the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the San Jose Museum of Art and the National Art Museum of China. Hou, who’s still in good health, opened a new exhibition earlier this month in Santa Clara County, California.

“We were very honored that he decided to share his story with us, so that anyone can come to the museum and read his story,” Ward says.

The master artist talks about the teachers who influenced him as a youth and why he decided to become an artist.

The museum plans to add Hou to its permanent exhibit and to put some pieces from the oral-history project online.

Intl cooperation saving ‘oriental gem’

The crested ibis, an endangered bird once thought to be extinct known as the "oriental gem," is thriving thanks to decades of joint cooperation between China and Japan.

As one of the oldest bird species in the world, the wild crested ibis, with its iconic red crest and long black beak, was believed to be extinct in China until seven wild birds were observed by Chinese ornithologist Liu Yinzeng and his research team in 1981 in Yangxian county, Northwest China’s Shaanxi province.

"We felt both excited and pressured after the discovery," said Lu Baozhong, then head of the crested ibis protection team. "Team members safeguarded the birds 24 hours a day, spreading butter on trees and installing protective devices to deal with their natural enemies such as snakes."

The crested ibis population has been increasing since then with the joint protection work between China and Japan. China started captive breeding of crested ibises in 1991, breeding more than 400 birds in Shaanxi and expanding their habitats. China now has more than 3,000 crested ibises.

China donated five crested ibises to help rebuild the species in Japan in the 1990s, while Japan has been supporting the protection of the crested ibis habitat in China through both governmental and non-governmental projects.

As an iconic bird deeply rooted in Japanese history and culture, the crested ibis had decreased in number in the 20th century and Japanese-born ibises became extinct in 2003. The crested ibises in Japan today, more than 500 in number, are all descendants of those from China.

"Crested ibises have become a bridge of friendship between China and Japan, and we hope there will be more such exchanges in the future," said Yoshinori Kaneko, a vet at the Sado Japanese Crested Ibis Conservation Center.

"In recent years, Yangxian county has allocated more than 260 hectares of mountainous areas for forest conservation and restored over 230 hectares of natural wetlands, creating a suitable habitat for crested ibis," said Du Jiacai, head of the county government.
