Hulkenberg gunning for change of fortune in Monaco

Despite his seventh place finish in the season-opener Australian Grand Prix, Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg doesn’t have much to show yet in terms of results this season.

The German, and his team, appeared as possible dark horses during pre-season testing but it just hasn’t come to fruition yet for the pair, despite a major upgrade on the evolution front which was implemented in Spain.

Hulkenberg still feels competitive however, and puts the lackluster results to date more on bad luck than on any real performance slump. At one of the rare venues where a drive can outperform his mount, Hulkenberg will be looking for a good result next weekend in the Principality.

“Monaco is one of the best weeks of the year. The track, the location, the schedule – it has all the things that make Formula 1 such a great sport.

“This will be my sixth Monaco Grand Prix, but I will still feel a huge buzz when I walk into the paddock on Wednesday morning and see everything taking shape.

“The challenge of the track is good fun and very demanding. You build your speed with each session and by the time you get to qualifying you need to be right at the limit.

“When you walk the track you can’t believe that we actually race there because it’s so narrow. You need to be incredibly precise because you can’t afford even the smallest mistake.

“Mentally it’s very tough because it’s corner after corner and there’s never a moment when you can relax – even for a second.

Like many F1 drivers, Monte-Carlo is also where Nico Hulkenberg has chosen to live, the glitzy backdrop and surroundings will therefore provide him with a familiar sight, and perhaps an extra boost of motivation as he competes at home.

“Monaco is one of my home races and I’m hoping that my luck will start to change this weekend. Sometimes you have a spell of unlucky races and there’s nothing you can do about it – that’s the way I look back on Russia and Spain.

“You have to put them out of your mind and move on. Monaco is a fresh start and I’m already smiling at the thought of driving around such a fantastic lap.”

Vettel teases ‘suspicions’ over Verstappen’s pole pace

Sebastian Vettel admitted that he was more than a little surprised by how fast Red Bull had been in qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen was quickest in all three rounds of the session, and took pole by 0.123s from Vettel in Q3.

But in the post-qualifying press conference, a mischievous Vettel decided to pay the Dutch driver back for comments he had previously made about Ferrari ‘cheating’ with its power unit design.

The FIA has since looked into Ferrari’s set-up and declared itself satisfied, but Vettel decided it was time to turn the tables in the simmering argument between the two teams.

  • Verstappen fends off Vettel for Brazilian GP pole

“It was a bit of surprise to see – not to see them this quick, but to see them that quick on the straights?” Vettel suggested. “A little bit suspicious!

“I don’t think they have introduced a new spec?” he queried. “Obviously there is no progress from one race to another, because it’s the same engine I suppose.

“We were always a bit faster than everyone else on the straights. Today Max and Alex were as fast as us. I don’t know why, we haven’t done anything different.”

Turning more serious, Vettel explained how he had lost time in his first run in Q3 which ultimately gave Verstappen the advantage to clinch pole.

“I had a bit of a wobble at the exit of the last corner on the first run,” he said. “But Max improved his time [on the second run] so fair play. I think it’s his pole position.

“Max’s time was a bit far away, so I think we have to admit we got beaten fair and square.

“I think we were a bit shy yesterday, more aggressive this morning which was a step forward. And then in qualifying it seemed to go up and get better,” he continued.

“I think the track ramped up,” he added. “I’m happy with the front row, now we’ll see what we can do tomorrow.

“The car has been good, I think it got better throughout qualifying which was the target and I think we improved it. Hopefully we can keep that momentum also for the race.”

Although the matter of this year’s drivers and constructors titles has already been wrapped up, Vettel is still hoping to beat Verstappen and his own team mate Charles Leclerc in the championship standings.

Vettel is currently in fifth place on 230 points with two races to go including tomorrow’s Brazilian GP. That puts him five behind Verstappen, and 19 behind Leclerc who will start tomorrow’s race from 14th place because of an engine penalty.

“It will be difficult,” Vettel said when asked it he felt a valuable victory was possible on Sunday. “Both Red Bull and Mercedes look a bit stronger managing tyres, but we are there for a reason.

“We [have to] make sure we manage the tyres and make the right call on strategy,” he said. “We know the race for us is not as strong as qualifying but I was quite pleased with the balance.

“We, therefore, did another long-run this morning which felt better than yesterday, so that gives me hope for tomorrow.”

“There is always something crazy happening [at Interlagos],” he added. “It might rain tomorrow, even though it says sunshine, here you never know.

“We’ve got the speed, we’ve got the power, so let’s see what the race brings. I’m carefully optimistic. I think it should be a good race.”

Live timing and coverage: Final pre-season test day four

Follow live coverage of day four of the final pre-season test from Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya with F1i.

The teams have just one day of testing left to prepare their cars for the start of the 2016 season, with Friday practice in Melbourne just two weeks away. Mercedes will end testing with by far the most mileage of any team over the past eight days, but there were some encouraging lap times from Ferrari and Williams on Thursday.

  • Live timing and coverage from Barcelona

The final day sees Mercedes run both drivers, while Haas will do the same. Romain Grosjean was scheduled to drive throughout the day but lost running for Esteban Gutierrez – who completed just 24 laps at the start of the week – means the Mexican driver will take over in the afternoon.

Sebastian Vettel rounds off the test for Ferrari while Jenson Button is back in the improving McLaren. Rookies Jolyon Palmer and Rio Haryanto will both be looking for more serious mileage ahead of their race debuts in a fortnight.

You can follow live coverage of both pre-season tests – including live timing – on F1i’s live page here, while there are also galleries of all of the new cars.

Running will take place from 0900-1300 and 1400-1800 every day throughout the final test, which runs from March 1-4.

Rosberg worried by Red Bull surge at Monaco

Nico Rosberg sounded distinctly rattled when talking about the pace of the rival Red Bull cars in Thursday’s free practice sessions at Monaco, which saw Daniel Ricciardo some six tenths faster than the two Mercedes cars.

“It’s very simple, today they were faster than us,” said Rosberg, who currently leads the 2016 world championship points standings.

“It’s a bit challenging out there in general, but that’s fine. It’s been a good day. Just Red Bull is quicker than us so need to see if we can find some more pace.

“Definitely surprising how quick they were, we expected them to be there or thereabouts but not that quick,” he admitted.

“We need to dig into it and see if we can find a lot of extra lap time. Of course we can still turn up our engine, but we don’t have six tenths of turning up our engine, you know?”

Asked if he was confident that Mercedes would find the extra time from the car to see off the Red Bull threat in Saturday’s qualifying session, Rosberg sounded anything but.

“Confident after today? No, because Red Bull was quicker. But I’m really confident that we can do a great job and improve the car – if it’s enough, I don’t know.”

“If today was qualifying they would be in front of us so we definitely need to find some more pace and it’s not going to be easy,” he pointed out. “We definitely have a lot of homework to do. We need to find some more performance.

“In the car I have some work to do as well, I’m not 100 per cent yet,” he added. “The most important thing is just getting the car right, getting the balance right, getting good laps, getting good rhythm. Qualifying is very, very important at this race.”

If he wins here this weekend it will be his forth consecutive Grand Prix victory at Monaco, a feat not achieved since Aryton Senna in the early 1990s. However, that sort of thing didn’t seem to much interest Rosberg.

“That would mean not much – winning the race would mean a lot to me because that’s the awesome part. It’s my home, I love winning here, it’s the biggest thrill, so that would mean a lot.”

Haas in no hurry to name 2017 drivers

Haas F1 Team boss Guenther Steiner says drivers Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutierrez are still under scrutiny with regard to the pair remaining with Haas for 2017.

While Steiner believes it would probably be in the team’s best interest to keep his current line-up intact for next season, he was still in the process of evaluating  both men, with no decision likely to be made until the end of the European campaign.

“We want to see what happens after Monza, then we’ll see,” Steiner said.

“We’re in no hurry, we know what we can do, we know we are safe for next year, so we don’t have to panic or anything. When you’re confident in what you’re doing, you normally don’t try to do anything radical.”

With Kimi Raikkonen’s contract with Ferrari extended into next year, Romain Grosjean, a potential candidate to replace the Finn, looks set to remain with Haas, having scored 28 points for the US squad so far.

Gutierrez on the other hand has yet to finish a race in the top 10 until Steiner concedes that it has not been all clear sailing for the Mexican.

“I think now even to evaluate Esteban wouldn’t be fair because he had a few races where the circumstances didn’t help him; an accident, the car broke down.

“We don’t put pressure onto anybody and if you start to speak to people, speculation starts, people get insecure and you don’t get the best out of the drivers.”

Consequently, the team won’t be announcing anything on its driver’s front until after the summer.

“We agreed between us that we don’t really want to talk about drivers before the European season is over because we need to see what we’ve got.”

William Ruckelshaus, Who Defied Nixon In ‘Saturday Night Massacre,’ Dies At 87

Then-acting FBI Director William D. Ruckelshaus pauses during a May 1973 news conference in Washington, D.C. Ruckelshaus died Wednesday at the age of 87.

William D. Ruckelshaus, the nation’s first administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency and a former deputy attorney general who was perhaps best known for defying President Nixon during the Watergate scandal, has died at the age of 87 at his home in Medina, Wash.

A moderate Republican, Ruckelshaus was an Ivy League-trained lawyer from Indianapolis who, in 1969, joined the Nixon administration as head of the Justice Department’s civil division. In late 1970, he became the first administrator of the new Environmental Protection Agency where he oversaw the implementation of the Clean Air Act and the banning of the pesticide DDT.

With a record and reputation as a pragmatic political trouble-shooter known as “Mr. Clean,” Ruckelshaus was tapped as acting FBI director and then deputy attorney general during the early stages of the Watergate scandal. Within months of his arrival at the Justice Department, he would become embroiled in one of the most controversial events in the scandal over the White House-orchestrated break-in at the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate Hotel.

As the investigation into the alleged cover-up of the break-in intensified, Nixon ordered then-Attorney General Eliot Richardson and Ruckelshaus to fire the independent special Watergate prosecutor Archibald Cox. They both refused and instead resigned. That episode in October 1973 came to be known as the “Saturday Night Massacre” and it led to the eventual downfall of the Nixon presidency a year later.

Ruckelshaus left Washington, D.C., and moved to Seattle in 1976. He was a senior vice president for the lumber giant Weyerhauser when he returned to lead the EPA under President Reagan in 1983. He is widely credited with re-energizing the demoralized and scandal-ridden agency before leaving at the beginning of Reagan’s second term in early 1985.

From 1988 to 1995, Ruckelshaus was chairman and CEO of Browning Ferris Industries (BFI), a large garbage-removal company. Under his leadership, BFI moved into the New York market where it helped break up the Mafia’s role in the trash removal business.

A noted conservationist, Ruckelshaus led the Puget Sound Partnership from 2007 to 2010. More recently, he has been critical of President Trump’s environmental policies.

As The Associated Press reports,

Ruckelshaus was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in November 2015.
