'Without a doubt' Messi is the best ever, says Bartomeu

The forward is considered among the greats, but there is no doubt in theBarcelona president’s mind

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has no doubt Lionel Messi is the greatest player of all-time.

Messi, 32, is tipped to win a record sixth Ballon d’Or on Monday after enjoying another fine year.

The forward helped Barcelona win La Liga once again this past season, and he’s been in fine form to start the campaign this time around despite dealing with an injury to start the season.

The Argentine has scored eight goals in as many matches in La Liga play while adding a further two finishes in the Champions League.

In addition, Messi has five La Liga assists to go with those eight goals as he’s shaken off that delayed start to jump right up the La Liga scoring charts.

Messi will go up against Virgil van Dijk for this year’s award, with the Liverpool defender among the nominees after guiding the Reds to a victory over Tottenham in the Champions League final.

Cristiano Ronaldo is also among the possibilities, with the Juventus star in the running after leading Portugal past Van Dijk’s Netherlands team in the finals of the first-ever UEFA Nations League.

The Argentina forward Messi is often discussed among the greatest players ever, alongside the likes of Diego Maradona, Pele and Ronaldo.

But Bartomeu, whose club celebrated their 120th anniversary on Friday, has no doubt that the Barcelona star is the best that he’s ever seen.

“Without a doubt Leo Messi is the best player in football history, he has made a huge mark on the world of football,” he told the club’s website.

“There is no club in the world that has had as much success as Barca, with a player that has won six Golden Boots or has five Ballon d’Or awards.

“He is a different player, who changes the dynamics of a game and creates incredible moments.

“It has helped us to be more global and, compared to other times, has created a very strong era and we will be transformed by this era of the team and Messi.”

Barcelona are top of La Liga heading into the weekend as Messi and co. face a marquee clash with visiting Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

'It is not true' – Tottenham boss Mourinho denies reports of Arsenal talks

The manager did not meet with the Gunners before he was appointed Spurs head coach, the former Chelsea boss says

Jose Mourinho insists he did not hold talks with Arsenal about replacing Unai Emery before becoming Tottenham’s new head coach.

And the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Chelsea boss says the identity of the next Gunners head coach matters little to him – regardless of links to former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Mourinho was appointed by Tottenham last week, replacing the sacked Pochettino, but reports on Friday claimed he would also have been a target for Arsenal had Spurs’ rivals moved faster in sacking Emery.

However, any suggestions that Mourinho may have discussed the Arsenal job with head of football Raul Sanllehi were batted away by the Portuguese.

Asked if his representative had met with Arsenal, Mourinho said: “No. No.

“Of course I never deny it because I never deny things. But when I was reading that I was in a meeting with Mr Sanllehi, it is not true.”

Pochettino has emerged as one potential option at Emirates Stadium, meaning he would return to face Tottenham and Mourinho in charge of their fiercest rivals.

But Mourinho was not concerned by the prospect, insisting he would be taking on Arsenal and not the new coach.

“I never played against Pochettino in my life. Never,” he said. “Manchester United against Tottenham, yes, Tottenham against Chelsea, yes, but never me against Pochettino.

“So if he goes to Arsenal, if he goes to I don’t know which club, it will never be me against [him]. It will be me against these clubs.

“So yes, I look forward to playing against Arsenal; yes, I want to play against Arsenal. I know what it means for our fans.

“I know that one is a big one, not just because Arsenal is a big club that fights for the same objectives as we do, but also I know the meaning and I like it.”

Mourinho, meanwhile, is glad to be back in the Premier League, having been out of a job since leaving Manchester United in 2018.

“You know how much I like the Premier League, that’s the first point. You go back to Porto, my first opportunity to leave my country I had lots of options. It was England,” he said.

“I was in Real Madrid, probably the dream club for the majority of us. I left Real Madrid to come to the Premier League. Now, I stayed in the Premier League which I always say is my natural habitat. So many years I like it a lot. So that is a point.

“The second point is this club. You know what the club is showing me. The vision they have for the future and everything, they are as a club in terms of structure organisation, feelings, a big club but with a concept of a family, working together with people.

“I see them everyday. Everybody is around me. Mr Levy is next door to me, his office is next door to me. Everyday I need him he is there. He needs me, I’m there. Then the chief scout [Steve Hitchen] is the next door. I meet him everyday. If I want to speak he’s there. If he wants to speak with me, I’m here. The academy boss three doors [down]. Everything is close, it’s commitment.

“We arrive here early in the morning, we leave late in the afternoon. I like very much this kind of empathy and the way we are working. And, again, very, very important, I like the players. Very important.”

Meaningful Presents That Can’t Be Wrapped

It’s hard to beat the euphoric rush of coming down the stairs on Christmas morning and seeing a Mt. Everest of gifts avalanching down around the tree. Unwrapping that perfectly-curated gadget or necklace or watching the looks on your kids’ faces as they tear into the latest must-have toy is priceless, but sometimes we get so swept up in the “buy culture” of the holiday season that we can lose sight of its true meaning – that the memories we create (whether they’re gifts or experiences) are much more important.

With that spirit in mind, we thought we’d connect with some Canadians who have put a more meaningful spin on their holiday gift-giving in the hopes of creating some long-lasting memories – gifts such as experiences or shared events that the family can do together, or even that personalized gift that tugs on the heartstrings.

In collaboration with Interac, here are some ideas to inspire you as you brainstorm ways to show your loved ones how you feel this season.

You can’t put wrapping paper on your dad’s best dad jokes, nor can you put your sister’s infectious laugh under the tree. The feeling you get when you share some amazing time with your family is invaluable, so why not start a new tradition by taking everyone out to enjoy a movie or theatre production.

“It’s been a family tradition for years to attend The Nutcracker every holiday season. It’s a great way to spend quality time together plus get festive!” says Toronto-based project manager, Sabrina Campolucci. “We usually grab a bite to eat either before or after the show, always ensuring we try someplace new.”

And with the myriad of ways to get tickets with easy and secure Interac payment options, pulling this epic family outing together each year is a piece of cake. And the best part is, the tradition can grow to include anyone you feel like sharing the joy with. “Some years we invite our extended family or friends to join us, just to change it up and experience the performance through their eyes,” Campolucci adds. “It’s a very special time of year for my family and we look forward to it as the holiday season approaches.”

If you’ve ever uttered the words “Wait, you made this yourself?!” to a creative family member as you opened a gift they gave you, then you know how cool and meaningful it can be as opposed to, say, a gift card or something store bought. Plus, you get to brag to all your friends about how talented your family is.

Health and wellness professional Danielle Rodenkirchen agrees. Rodenkirchen’s family has a deep history in the bespoke-craft arts. “Actually, we used to make homemade gifts in lieu of purchasing already made gifts,” she says. “I come from a very creative family, so some examples from years past included baked goods, frozen meals, homemade candles, art pieces, personalized calendars, ornaments, wood crafted items, I could go on.”

But Rodenkirchen’s love for DIY gifting doesn’t end there, she’s also turned it into an experiential gift as well, often giving her own children local hands-on craft activities to learn, such as ceramics painting or glass art classes. “We have even gone to a candle-making workshop,” she says. “They still get a handful of material items, but we are trying to do less of stuff we don’t need and gift more practical items that we do need like socks, bed sheets, a new water bottle.”

All this is not to say that buying something material can never be meaningful. It can for sure; it just takes some thought and observation to nail that perfect gift.

A couple of years ago, writer Derek Malcolm bought and renovated his family’s rundown 80-year-old cottage from his father after his mother passed away. It was a special place for them, and after getting a new lease on life they were excited to enjoy it together.

Derek’s wife and daughter love the water, and they talked endlessly about having a stand-up paddleboard to take out on the Georgian Bay together. So, in the middle of a December snowstorm, he strapped a 12-foot SUP to the roof of his car and drove it from a downtown Toronto sporting goods store to his house outside the city.

He hid it in his backyard gazebo (which was covered for the winter) for two weeks, and on Christmas Eve he waited until everyone was asleep before he snuck out of bed to traipse it into the house for the morning reveal. “It basically eclipsed the entire Christmas tree,” his wife recalls, laughing. “We’d been going on about a paddleboard all summer, and we couldn’t believe you remembered. As far as meaningful gifts go, you hit the nail on the head.”

Now, each summer as they all enjoy the water together on their new toy –however material it may be – not only are the Malcolms making new family memories, but they all get to have a laugh remembering how a stand-up paddleboard ended up under their Christmas tree.

Fabinho blow for Liverpool as ankle ligament damage rules midfielder out until 2020

The Brazil international midfielder picked up an untimely knock during a meeting with Napoli and will sit out the remainder of the calendar year

Liverpool have revealed that Fabinho will be out of action until 2020, with it confirmed that the Brazil international suffered ankle ligament damage against Napoli.

The news comes as a serious blow to Jurgen Klopp’s plans, with the South American having become a key component in the Reds’ Premier League title-chasing side.

With a packed schedule ahead of them, Liverpool would have been hoping to avoid any untimely setbacks, however, Fabinho will not be seen again for the remainder of the calendar year.

That means that the 26-year-old will sit out important domestic fixtures in an ongoing bid for English top-flight glory, while also missing the Reds’ quest to claim the FIFA Club World Cup crown.

No timescale has been put on his recovery, but those at Anfield are preparing themselves to be without one of the finest holding midfielders in the business for a prolonged period of time.

A statement released on the club’s official website read: “Liverpool can confirm Fabinho suffered ankle ligament damage during the Champions League encounter with Napoli in midweek.

“The midfielder needed to be substituted after 18 minutes of the 1-1 draw at Anfield on Wednesday night after falling awkwardly during a challenge.

“Further assessment on the injury has discovered Fabinho will be out of action until the New Year.

“The Brazilian will begin a rehabilitation programme with the Reds’ medical team at Melwood as he works his way back to full fitness.”

Klopp admitted after witnessing Fabinho being forced from the field against Napoli that losing the Brazilian would be “massive” for Liverpool.

Former Reds star Harry Kewell has also been left cursing the club’s luck after seeing a man who has made rapid progress over recent months ruled out for the foreseeable future.

He told Sky Sports: “It is a huge loss, he’s been the sponge.

“He’s soaking everything up. When he receives the ball, he passes it forward – which many holding midfielders don’t do, that first pass forward to put your team on the attack.

“It’s a big loss, but I’m confident in the squad that there are plenty to fill in.”

The first game in which Liverpool will need to find cover for Fabinho is set to see them play host to Brighton on Saturday.
