Chicharito happy to give Sevilla boss Lopetegui selection headache

The Mexico international scored his first La Liga goal of the season on Sunday and hopes to keep his place in the starting XI

Sevilla forward Javier Hernandez hopes to give coach Julen Lopetegui selection headaches with his performances for the club after netting his first goal in their victory over Getafe on Sunday.

The Mexico international broke down a stubborn opposition defence in La Liga just shy of the 70th minute before Lucas Ocampos sealed the 2-0 win with another late effort.

The 31-year-old, who arrived from West Ham ahead of the current campaign, has struggled for regular game-time with just two starts so far in the Spanish top flight behind Luuk de Jong.

But having opened his account, the one-time Real Madrid star has stated his intention to push on and press Lopetegui for more regular inclusion while celebrating his team’s positive result.

“Since I was a child, my father and my coaches have told me that the most important chance is the next one,” Chicharito told Sevilla’s website. “Therefore I kept on trying to find the back of the net.

“What was going through my head was that we were having a hard time opening the scoring. Getafe are a very tough side and the game was just as tough.

“I’m really happy the goal came when it did, and that we sealed the win with a great goal by Ocampos.

“In most games we have shown how solid we are. At the minute, we are defensively sound as, once more, we kept another clean sheet – and this time we were able to score twice on top of that.

“Everything is coming together very nicely. We are improving and we hope to continue in this manner.”

Speaking on the competition for places, Chicharito added: “When I scored in Europe for the first time I knew that people were going to be looking for a debate.

“However, De Jong is happy and so am I. Everything we do is for the team, and to give the manager this type of headache is a good thing. Every team would love to have all their striker firing on all cylinders.”

Sevilla remain firmly entrenched in a thrillingly tight race near the top of La Liga, and are only a point off leaders Granada, alongside Barcelona, Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid

Valverde backs Barca players to solve problems 'within the club' after Ter Stegen comments

The coach has backed his side to deal with any issues internally after his goalkeeper gave a scathing public assessment of his own team

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde insists any problems within the team will be resolved privately following recent comments made by goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The German goalkeeper criticised his side’s performance in last week’s 2-1 Champions League win at Slavia Prague and stated improvements had to be made.

Slavia ended the match in the Czech Republic on top and Ter Stegen suggested he and his team-mates needed to discuss the below-par display among themselves.

Valverde believes too much importance was given to the final stages of the match, however, and wants any issues to remain internal.

“When matches end, everyone leaves with an opinion of what happened on the field,” he said at a news conference on Monday.

“Matches can be seen in many ways, and if we have to solve something, we will solve it with within the club and not publicly.

“When the game ends, people’s impression is of the final minutes and they don’t think about the overall game.

“In the first half of the Slavia game we had two or three chances on goal, they attacked and we did as well. In the second half, they got an early goal and we managed to get the result we wanted in the end.

“They pressed us and that’s it. If it had been a 4-1 win, we would be talking like we had the same result as in Eibar [a 3-0 victory]. This is football and it is normal.”

Barcelona have not played since that narrow victory in Prague five days ago due to Saturday’s scheduled encounter with Real Madrid being called off as a result of civil unrest in Catalonia.

La Liga’s reigning champions are back in action on Tuesday with a home match against Real Valladolid, who have already taken points off Madrid and Atletico this term.

“They have had a good run and against the top teams have got some good results,” Valverde said. “Taking into account last year’s game [a 1-0 win for Barca] which was complicated, this is a game which we have many hopes for after the break this week.

“They have reinforced their style because they are doing well. I expect them to play like they have in recent matches. They will be solid and hard to overcome.”

Samuel Umtiti remains a major doubt for the game due to a knee injury, while youngsters Carles Perez, Ansu Fati and Carles Alena are all pushing for inclusion at Camp Nou.

“Umtiti trained apart from the group [on Sunday], though I think it will be difficult for him to participate,” he said. “There may be some other changes as well.

“[Perez and Fati] are with the first team and that is, in principle, the idea we have, even though they are able to play with the B team and might at some point play for them.

“Alena hasn’t played as much as I thought, and he possibly deserves more game time because he is giving everything in training. There is a lot of competition in midfield and he can be called at any time so he has to be prepared.”

Rooney calls for MLS change: U.S. players 'taken advantage of' with low salaries

The ex-Manchester United captain has given his thoughts as he exits the U.S. at the end of the season for Derby County in England’s second tier

Wayne Rooney has called for higher salaries and a European-style transfer market in Major League Soccer as he bids farewell to his time at D.C. United.

The former Manchester United and England captain played his last game for the U.S. club earlier in October as they were knocked out of the MLS Cup play-offs by Toronto FC.

The 34-year-old, who won all major domestic honours during his career in Premier League football, has signed a deal to become a player-coach with Derby County in the Championship from January onwards .

Reflecting on his time in North America, Rooney spoke about his experiences with Ben Olsen’s side over the past 16 months, including on the matter of earnings.

The one-time Everton star was among the highest-paid players in the top flight of the English game during his peak years at Old Trafford, and was still on a salary of $2.7 million (£2.1m) for 2018 following his arrival in July that year.

However, Rooney feels that pay is too low in relation to the turnover and profit generated by MLS, specifically in regards for up and coming homegrown talents.

“The salary for a lot of players [is an issue here],” he told The Athletic . “I think, for the revenue the league is bringing in, the salary is not high enough for in particular the young American players.

“I feel that they’re negotiating against other American players, they’re not negotiating against what foreign players make, I don’t think that’s right for them.

“They deserve more, they’re working the same as we’re working, they’re training as much as we’re training, and I just feel that sometimes they get took advantage of.”

Rooney also added that he felt the nature of the MLS transfer market – where teams can trade players with little warning or tied down following a draft selection – is unfair to individuals.

“Players also get tied up,” he continued. “I think players should be allowed to move from club to club [more freely] – a bit more like it is in Europe, where if one club wants to sign a player, you have to pay money, pay more on the salary.

“I feel here players can get moved on too easily, they can have a family, come home from training one day and they get told they’re moving to the west coast, the east coast.

“For a family it’s really difficult to just up and leave like that without any real notice. Free agency is absolutely a big one for players over here.”

Rooney also paid tribute to the level of coaching from Olsen and his team at the Audi Field, but that he also feels that sides sometimes try to replicate European strategies to mixed results.

“From what I’ve seen, coaching – I can only speak for the coaches [at D.C. United], I don’t know exactly what the other coaches are doing – the coaches here have been good,” he added.

“I do see the way other teams are set up and how teams want to play. I feel maybe – sometimes you see it with the U.S. national team – sometimes players can get over-coached.

“I feel that maybe be where the coaches over here are trying to do too much with the players. It’s a simple game but they see a coach like [Pep] Guardiola and they say ‘oh we have to try and do what he does,’ and they shouldn’t, necessarily.”

‘Neymar & Mbappe are made to play together’ – Barcelona star Umtiti hails PSG pair

The France international defender believes a former team-mate and fellow World Cup winner will deliver considerable success at Parc des Princes

Neymar and Kylian Mbappe are “made to play together”, says Samuel Umtiti, with the Barcelona defender expecting Paris Saint-Germain to prosper with two global superstars working in tandem.

The reigning Ligue 1 champions are up and running again for 2018-19, with their leading lights illuminating early fixtures under new boss Thomas Tuchel.

Umtiti expects further success to be delivered in the French capital, with PSG boasting an enviable array of attacking talent.

The World Cup-winning defender knows all about two of those fearsome frontmen , with Neymar’s talents having been witnessed up close at Camp Nou while Mbappe is an international team-mate.

The Barca centre-half told Canal+ of a star-studded side at Parc des Princes: “Neymar was a very good team-mate to have when he was at Barcelona.

“He’s somebody who is always full of joy, who is always happy and who is always playing pranks and making jokes.

“We know all about Neymar’s qualities. He can unlock any match. He is [playing] at an exceptional level.

“Neymar together with Kylian Mbappe … players of their talent are made to play together. There is no reason why it should not work.”

Brazil international Neymar has been back in familiar surroundings on Monday, with a visit paid to Barcelona’s training base to catch up with old friends.

His focus has turned back to domestic matters following a summer away with his country, with many of those in Catalunya doing likewise.

Umtiti falls into that category, with the 24-year-old still coming to terms with the fact that he is now a world champion.

“I think about the World Cup title every single day,” he said.

“When I pick up my phone, I see it as it is my wallpaper. It is true that I think about it all the time, even when I speak with my family or team-mates who shared these moments with me.

“We had a wonderful squad. Honestly, I could have spent two more months with them. It was fun, but at the same time, also serious. It is all well and good to have won the World Cup but there were other things behind it too. You have to stay focused and not try to be somebody else.”

While reflecting on the recent past, Umtiti has also been looking to the future and revealed that he intends to go into management once the time comes to hang up his boots.

He added: “I would like to go into coaching.

“I think that it is a job that I will be able to enjoy after my footballing career.”

'Bale, Benzema or Ramos – I don't care who scores' – Lopetui relieved with Real Madrid comeback

The European champions came from behind to beat Girona 4-1 with the help of two penalties, but the coahc was not bothered by how the goals came

Julen Lopetegui insists he is not concerned by who scores or how his Real Madrid side come by their goals, as long as they continue to find the target.

Madrid were 4-1 winners at Girona in La Liga on Sunday but had to rely on two penalties to overturn their hosts’ lead before Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema netted goals from open play.

The result put to bed bad memories of last season, when Madrid – then led by Zinedine Zidane – were beaten 2-1 at Montilivi.

“The matches are complex and more so against good teams like Girona,” said Madrid head coach Lopetegui.

“They scored a goal and then they had the chance to score a second.

“But then the two penalties, we put them away and in the second half we clearly deserved the win.”

Asked about the importance of Bale, who scored Madrid’s first from open play in the 59th minute after captain Sergio Ramos and Benzema had netted a spot-kick apiece, Lopetegui added: “The team is what matters.

“When it works, the goals have come in the form of Gareth, Karim or Sergio. The important thing is that they arrive, not who gets them. The team showed a collective spirit.

“In the first half we were in too much of a rush to attack, missing passes. When the score went in our favour we were much better.

“Girona pressed us in the first half and caused us some difficulties and we had to show good spirit to overcome that and get the three points.”

Ronaldo will be gearing up for an enthusiastic fan reception as he is set to make his home debut in front of the Juventus fans for the first time in Serie A.

Juventus found themselves losing 2-1 just after the break against Chievo, and it was only after a late fight-back a goals from Federico Bernardeschi and a Mattia Bani own goal that they were able to escape with all three points.

Allegri’s side will be looking to win their eighth successive Serie A title this season and will no doubt be extra-motivated following the arrival of the Portuguese superstar.

Lazio took the lead against Serie A runners-up Napoli with Ciro Immobile scoring in the 25th minute, but Carlo Ancelotti’s side were able to mount a similar fight-back of their own as goals from Arkadiusz Milik and Lorenzo Insigne ensured that they ran out winners.

Lazio finished fifth last season, level on points with Inter but having lost more matches, and will be eager to push on to challenge for a Champions League spot this season.

Leeds close in on taking Chelsea midfielder Brown on loan

The Blues youngster is set to become the third Blues youngster to join the Elland Road outfit this season as he closes in on a return to full fitness

Leeds United are closing in on the signing of Chelsea midfielder Izzy Brown on a season-long loan deal, Goal can confirm.

The 21-year-old arrived in West Yorkshire on Thursday morning for further talks with the Championship leaders as he looks set to again depart Stamford Bridge.

Brown helped Huddersfield Town earn promotion to the Premier League in 2016-17, scoring four goals in the second half of the campaign having previously spent time at Rotherham United.

He joined Brighton on a temporary deal last season, but made just 13 appearances for the Seagulls before an anterior cruciate ligament injuy ended his spell with Chris Hughton’s side in January.

The England Under-20 international is still working his way back to full fitness following that injury and chose to leave his decision to make any loan move until the end of the transfer window so he could continue his rehabilitation at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground.

He is now set to join up with Marcelo Bielsa’s side, though, with the Argentine coach looking to add competition for places in his midfield ranks.

Bielsa has overseen an encouraging start to the season at Elland Road, with the Whites sat atop of the Championship table having won four of their first five league games of the season.

They host second-placed Middlesbrough on Friday in an early-season clash of potential promotion chasers, with Tony Pulis’ side level with Leeds on 13 points.

Brown will become the third Chelsea loanee in Bielsa’s squad this season, with Lewis Baker and Jamal Blackman already bedded in at Leeds following moves earlier in the summer window.

Meanwhile, young Chelsea striker Ike Ugbo has completed a loan move to Scunthorpe United, as reported by Goal earlier in the month.

Ugbo spent last season on loan at Barnsley and has now moved to Glanford Park until January as new manager Stuart McCall bolsters his squad late in the transfer window.

From Pogba to the press: How Mourinho can fix Manchester United quickly

The pressure is on for the three-time Premier League winner but time is of the essence and he must get United back on track quickly or risk his job

These are testing times for Manchester United and Jose Mourinho. United have lost two of their opening three fixtures in the league for the first time since 1992. The 0-3 loss to Spurs on Monday, meanwhile, was Mourinho’s heaviest-ever home defeat.

It looks as though things are unravelling at Old Trafford, right in time for those who predicted a third-season meltdown for the Portuguese.

Whatever happens between now and next summer there is still a job to do and still objectives to reach. United have got to stay on track in the Premier League and navigate through the Champions League group stages.

Here are five ways Mourinho can alleviate the stress around United over the next few weeks…

The key question eating away at Manchester United is the form of Paul Pogba. He is clearly underperforming. His two penalties this season cannot mask the fact that he’s been way off the pace since returning from the World Cup.

No player has lost possession more than Pogba this season, who has given it away a scarcely-believable 70 times in three league matches. Whatever is going on behind the scenes, it is not good for the player, the manager or for the club who paid £89 million for his services.

There have been disagreements between Pogba and France manager Didier Deschamps in the past, but they were able to get on the same page and win the World Cup together in the summer.

That has got to happen at Old Trafford, whether through Mourinho accommodating Pogba in his preferred midfield role or Pogba adapting better to Mourinho’s demands

Much has been made of the defensive frailties at United, with seven goals conceded in their three opening games. But that is to ignore the fact that only four have been scored and half of those were Pogba’s penalties.

Two goals from open play in 270 minutes of football is a shocking return for a team boasting an attack containing Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Juan Mata and more.

It’s not like Pep Guardiola’s first season at Manchester City – when he was tearing what was left of his hair out over his team’s failure to convert the chances they created – it’s simply that in the creative department United haven’t been up to scratch.

Players like Mata are ill-suited to the counter-attacking game. They need constant involvement, in the anticipation of finding that one key pass. Marcus Rashford is stalling and not as productive as he should be – for club or for country.

The alienation of Anthony Martial has been a misstep from the manager. There is a player of world-class potential in there somewhere and Mourinho needs to unlock it.

While Alexis has attracted plenty of negative attention since moving from Arsenal, he has actually been a decent counter-attacker for Mourinho.

Since joining in January he has completed 44 dribbles; only Wilfried Zaha and Eden Hazard among the Premier League ranks have managed more in that time.

The Chilean has also created an impressive 30 chances and made three assists. The left side of the United attack is a decent avenue for Mourinho and he should exploit it more.

It is clear that Mourinho is going to continue to rely on Lukaku as his prime centre-forward and so the Belgian has got to ensure he is taking the decent chances coming his way, not wasting open goals, as he did against Spurs on Monday night.

Once upon a time Mourinho was adept at deflecting blame away from his players through the press, which allowed them to get on with the job. Whether that was railing against referees, UEFA, Unicef or opposition players and managers, Mourinho usually succeeded in getting the focus off his men.

Through the past few seasons, and certainly since his dog days at Chelsea, he has lost the knack. He has consistently criticised his own players individually through the press.

Luke Shaw, Martial and Rashford have all been on the receiving end of his barbs during his time at United, while even Eden Hazard was singled out at Stamford Bridge by his former manager.

It is hard to say what the upshot is of being so publicly vocal about the shortcomings of his players but on Monday he was effusive in his praise. Shaw, in particular, was talked up while, the team’s bravery in playing on the front foot was also noted.

On the whole, though, Mourinho’s performance in the post-match press conference was bizarre.

He was weirdly defensive of his own record – boldly stating his three Premier League titles numbered one more than the total achieved by the other 19 managers put together.

But that only served to hark back to a time when Mourinho was the new kid on the block. Pointing out achievements from 13 years ago is not a good look for a man hoping to convince people he’s got a future.

It is clear that Mourinho takes notice of what is written and said about him and his team. He has made attacks on Gary Neville and Paul Scholes among others and sardonically dismissed journalists writing about his team as “Einsteins”.

By turning up far too early for his pre-game press conference and giving lame responses he also made a rod for his own back.

It would be best for him to shut out the criticism and get on with the job.

Since Mourinho was installed at Old Trafford, Manchester United have made more changes to their starting XI than any other team, with 235.

While managers these days very often pick a system based on the opposition, players need continuity and certainty. It doesn’t help when players like Martial and Eric Bailly are starting one week and nowhere to be seen the next.

Mourinho needs to establish a core of seven or eight ‘undroppables’ and ensure that they are comfortable in what they are doing. That’s how Guardiola won the league last season.

Beyond that, he must make sure that he has a consistent central defensive partnership to rely upon. He has made alterations in that area so often that it would be a surprise if Jose himself knew what his best pair was.

It is no secret that Mourinho wanted a senior centre-back in the summer but was denied one by Ed Woodward. So, now he’s got to establish what’s best for the team going forward based on the personnel he’s got available.

Click Here: geelong cats guernsey 2019

The chopping and changing is not going to be helping anyone. The four senior centre-backs must realise they are only ever one mistake away from being dropped again.

Mourinho deserves some credit for taking the game to Tottenham on Monday night. United were bright in the opening half and probably should have been leading by half-time.

But Lukaku’s missed chance after he rounded Hugo Lloris has the potential to go down as a key moment – not only in the context of the game – but in the entire Mourinho reign.

If that chance had been scored, then the result would probably have been secured. Mourinho’s high-tempo game on the night necessitated the first goal. Without it, the plan unravelled.

Going into these kinds of games against the rest of the top six, Mourinho would ordinarily allow the opponent most of the ball and try to hit on the counter. Once Spurs got the opening goal – albeit against the run of play – United were in trouble.

By changing up the plan, it was as if he wanted to send a message. He played with Ander Herrera in the back-line and demanded his team get on the ball. After two years of reactive football and playing on the break in the big games, it was strange to see a United team attempting to seize the initiative.

It would be far safer for Mourinho to stick to his guns. Counter-attacking football might win no favour among the fans, but it is effective.

Bakayoko has 'defects', says Gattuso following loss to Napoli

The 24-year-old Frenchman joined the Rossoneri on loan from Chelsea in August, but his inability to perform on debut has left his coach frustrated

AC Milan manager Gennaro Gattuso has criticised loan signing Tiemoue Bakayoko following the Chelsea player’s failure to acclimatise to life in Serie A in their loss to title rivals Napoli, with the coach describing the player as having “defects”.

The Rossoneri blew a two-goal lead against their opponents to fall to a 3-2 defeat in their opening game of the new campaign.

Frenchman Bakayoko started the game on the bench and was introduced early in the second half when Milan led 2-1 to shore up the defence for the visitors.

Instead, however, the 24-year-old failed to ensure a watertight effort at the back, allowing strikes from Piotr Zielinski and Dries Mertens to rescue three points for the hosts.

Bakayoko also missed with a close-range header from a corner with the scores tied at 2-2 and Gattuso made his displeasure known with the season-long loanee, stating that he would have rather been able to call on a more experienced player.

“Bakayoko has to learn how to get the ball,” the 40-year-old told his post-match press conference. “We must work correctly. It will not be easy.

“One week is not enough to remove the defects of a player. I would have preferred to be managing older, more experienced club players.”

Bakayoko arrived at Milan in August following a lacklustre first season at Stamford Bridge, having originally signed for Chelsea last year from Monaco on a five-year deal for a fee around £40m (€44m/$51m).

The Serie A outfit have the option to turn their €5m loan buy into a permanent deal for an additional €35m if the defensive midfielder ultimately impresses at San Siro.

Gattuso has seen a host of players exit during the transfer window, including Italy international Leonardo Bonucci, who has departed for Serie A rivals Juventus, and Croatian forward Nikola Kalinic, who has joined La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid.

They have, however, brought in defender Mattia Caldara from Juve as well as Uruguay left-back Diego Laxalt from Genoa and Villarreal striker Samu Castillejo.

Milan play their first home game of the season on August 31 when they face Roma, before they travel to Cagliari over a fortnight later on September 16 following the international break.

'It's ancient history' – Fekir puts failed Liverpool transfer behind him

The France international was set to move to Anfield, but saw his summer switch capsize at the last moment despite terms being agreed

Former Liverpool transfer target Nabil Fekir insists that he has put the disappointment of his failed switch to Anfield behind him.

Earlier in the summer, the French midfielder agreed on personal terms over a move to the Merseyside club, but a deal ultimately failed to materialise.

Fekir was on international duty with France at the World Cup in Russia throughout June and July, as Didier Deschamps’ men lifted the trophy for the second time in their history, beating Croatia 4-2 in the final.

The 25-year-old playmaker revealed the great pride he felt having won the most prestigious competition in the game but was also keen to point out he is now fully focused on club duty, as he told reporters: “It’s true that being world champion is very good. But life goes on.

“That’s not why we have to stop working. There is a good season ahead with Lyon and we must prepare quietly”

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool squad underwent a significant summer of changes, with the likes of Naby Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson all arriving at Anfield ahead of the latest Premier League campaign.

The German boss had still been eager to add one more attacking midfielder to his ranks to complete his spending and Fekir was the ideal candidate, but it seems that both parties have now moved on.

Liverpool have won both of their opening league games in England while Lyon have managed to pick up two wins from their first three matches and Fekir continued by addressing the frustrating pre-season transfer saga.

He added: “Yes, the missed transfer to Liverpool is totally digested. These are things that happen. It’s like that. We must advance. It’s ancient history.

“I heard several things. The real reason is that they (Liverpool) only know it”

The Frenchman finished by revealing his expectations for the year ahead, stating that Lyon will do everthing within their power to challenge PSG.

“Like every season, we want to try to do the maximum in the league. The podium is a goal of the club. After there is the PSG, a great team with great players, we know that it will be complicated.

“My goals are always high. Like at the beginning of the season, I set big goals, but honestly there are no specific goals or anything. I try to help the team to the maximum and play all the competitions thoroughly”
