'It's nothing serious' – Chelsea's Emerson plays down injury scare after Italy's win over Finland

The 25-year-old has allayed fears he might be out of action for an extended period, insisting he only picked up a “small injury” on international duty

Emerson Palmieri delivered positive news on his injury status after limping off in the early stages of Italy’s win over Finland on Sunday.

The Chelsea left-back pulled up while chasing Teemu Pukki and had to be substituted in the eighth minute of the Euro 2020 qualifying match in Tampere.

The sight of defender Emerson making way would have been worrying for Frank Lampard, who has started him in each of Chelsea’s four Premier League games this term.

But the 25-year-old took to social media after the match to quell fears over the severity of the suspected muscle issue.

“Very important victory today guys,” Emerson wrote on Twitter.

“Unfortunately I had a small injury, but nothing serious. Let’s continue like this!”

Roberto Mancini replaced Emerson with Alessandro Florenzi and later confirmed the move was largely for precautionary reasons.

“It’s nothing serious,” the Azzurri boss said. “He came off to avoid making it any worse.”

Italy recovered from the early setback to prevail 2-1 courtesy of second-half goals from Ciro Immobile and Jorginho, Emerson’s team-mate at Stamford Bridge.

Mancini’s men are now six points clear atop Group J ahead of a home meeting with Greece on October 12.

Following his country’s latest international clash on Thursday, Emerson will return to Chelsea to prepare for their next Premier League outing.

The Blues travel to Wolves on Saturday needing a win to keep in touch with their rivals at the top of the table, after a slow start to the 2019-20 campaign.

Lampard’s men will then switch their attention to a Champions League opener against Valencia three days later, with the fixture list set to pile up over the next few weeks.

‘Salah is going to keep on being selfish’ – Mane saga is ‘nonsense’, says Liverpool legend Fowler

The Egyptian forward has faced accusations of being too focused on his own game, but a former Reds goal-getter considers that to be no bad thing

Mohamed Salah will continue to show a selfish streak at Liverpool and should make no apologies for it, says Reds legend Robbie Fowler.

The Egypt international has – not for the first time – faced accusations of being too self-centred in the final third of the field.

That debate was sparked again during a Premier League meeting with Burnley in which Sadio Mane was left clearly frustrated with the actions of a Reds colleague.

Fowler is reading little into the talk of a supposed rift in the Anfield camp, with emotions always running high in competitive action, and sees no reason why Salah – with 74 goals in 110 appearances for Liverpool – should change his ways.

The former Reds frontman told The Mirror: “I’ve honestly never heard such nonsense as the stuff that has surrounded this so-called spat between Sadio Mane and Mo Salah.

“Everyone commenting and talking nonsense about being ‘greedy’ or destroying team spirit, have they never watched football before?

“Because you can’t be a top-class goalscorer without total belief you will score.

“That’s what goalscorers do. They train for it, their whole week on the training ground is spent practising, visualising, working out how to score for every position and the best always believe they can score – from five yards, from 20, from 40. Wherever. Even if it’s easier to pass for a tap-in.

“I look at Salah’s record and it tells me he’s going to keep doing it.

“You don’t score that many goals without being what people say is selfish. But what the hell do people want?

“Do they want him to be a goalscorer or do they want him to be someone who’s always looking to pass? You can’t really have both.

“And the other nonsense I’ve heard is people saying he’s not passing because he’s jealous, he doesn’t want Mane to score.

“If anyone can slow down the game so much they have time to think, ‘Oh, I’m not passing to him because he’s scored more than me’, well they’re the best who’s ever played. Yes, Salah can be selfish when he sees the goal, but, to me, that makes him a great goalscorer.

“And it’s not as if he doesn’t create chances for others. Mane knows that, and what he did was just frustration at being taken off.”

Those inside the Liverpool camp – including manager Jurgen Klopp and club captain Jordan Henderson – were quick to play reports of a Mane-Salah feud down in the wake of a 3-0 victory at Turf Moor, while Michael Owen is another former Reds goal-getter to have backed the mindset of a predatory presence on Merseyside.

Ramos targets 200 games for Spain after equalling Casillas' record

The Real Madrid defender isn’t contemplating stepping away from the international arena anytime soon

Spain captain Sergio Ramos has declared his goal is to reach 200 international appearances after equalling Iker Casillas’ record on Sunday.

Ramos moved level with Casillas as Spain’s most-capped player following his 167th cap in a 4-0 rout of the Faroe Islands in Euro 2020 qualifying.

After matching Casillas in the Group F qualifier, the 33-year-old defender – who made his debut in 2005 – set a new target for himself.

“Records are there to be broken,” he said.

“I hope that this momentum, enthusiasm and ambition always accompanies me and that I reach 200 games, which is the objective. You have to make it difficult.”

Casillas praised Ramos after the Spain and Real Madrid skipper joined him in the history books.

“Congratulations on those 167 games! I hope there are many more,” Casillas tweeted.

Ramos – winner of two European Championships in 2008 and 2012 and the 2010 World Cup – appreciated his former teammate’s kind words.

“I’m flattered by Iker’s praise,” he said.

“I still have to overcome [his number] and I hope I can play for this country for many more years.”

Braces from Rodrigo and Paco Alcacer against the Faroe Islands have put Spain firmly on track to qualify for Euro 2020.

Spain have won their opening six matches to be top and seven points clear of Sweden in Group F.

Ramos praised head coach Robert Moreno, who replaced Luis Enrique in June after the former Barcelona boss stepped down due to personal reasons before the death of his daughter last month.

“I think he is comfortable and we’re delighted with him,” Ramos said.

“He knows the dressing room and our way of playing well. He can help us.”

Spain have won their past seven matches and will take on Norway and Sweden in October as they look to secure their place at Euro 2020.

Moreno dedicated his side’s latest victory to their former coach, whose daughter was given a minute’s silence prior to their match on Sunday.

“It upsets me to talk about it, but this team is his [Luis Enrique’s] more than anyone’s,” Moreno told a news conference.

“It is a tiny thing, but we wanted to dedicate it, especially here in El Molinon.”

'I will have my say' – Rose weighs in on transfer speculation

The Spurs defender isn’t worried about his club future and feels he has nothing to prove

Danny Rose is determined to put a summer of transfer speculation behind him and stressed that not everything that was said about his Tottenham situation is true.

Despite being linked with moves away from Spurs in recent months, the England international has made a strong start to the season and seems key to Mauricio Pochettino’s immediate plans.

While made available for transfer and left off Tottenham’s pre-season tour of Asia, Rose has remained with Spurs and is trying to focus on the positives.

“It wasn’t tough, it is what it is,” Rose said.

“Not everything that was publicised in the summer was entirely true and I think in the future I will have my say on everything that happened but I don’t want to focus on negativity at the minute.

“I guess I should be happy with maybe being up for sale and having started the first four games for Tottenham and the first England game of the campaign.

“I can’t lie I am very happy, but I just want to say that everything that was written in the summer wasn’t entirely true.”

Rose, 29, was signed by Tottenham in 2007 and after a handful of loan spells began playing regularly for the side in 2013.

The left-back would go on to make his Three Lions debut in 2016 and started for Spurs in the Champions League final against Liverpool last season.

While question marks remain over his long-term future, Rose is adamant his past speaks for itself and that he has managers that believe in him.

“I don’t need to prove myself to anybody,” he said.

“I have a manager at club level who knows me. You look at last season, I played in the quarter-final of the Champions League, I played semi-finals of the Champions League, I played in the final. So I’ve got a manager there who believes in me.

“Then if you look at international I’ve got a manager that whenever I’ve been available for selection I’ve been chosen. He fully believes in me and I’m very grateful.

“I’m lucky to have managers at club level and international level who believe in me.

“I don’t feel I’ve got anything to prove to anybody and I feel as if I’ve done enough over the years to prove my worth.”

24 Solar Terms: 8 things you may not know about White Dew

The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. White Dew, (Chinese: 白露), the 15th solar term of the year, begins this year on Sept 8 and ends on Sept 22. White Dew indicates the real beginning of cool autumn. The temperature declines gradually and vapors in the air often condense into white dew on the grass and trees at night.

Varying by geographical location, autumn comes earlier in the west and northeast of China. Right now Kanas in Xinjiang, Jiuzhaigou in Sichuan and the Greater Khingan Mountains in Northeastern China are entering the most beautiful season of the year.

From the first day of White Dew and as the season progresses, there is more and more dew. Although sunshine during the day makes it still hot, after sunset, temperatures decrease rapidly. At night, water vapor in the air turns into small drops of water when it encounters cold temperatures. These white water-drops adhere to flowers, grass and trees. When the morning comes, sunshine makes them look crystal clear, spotless white and adorable.

Here are 8 things you should know about White Dew.

Iran activates advanced centrifuges to boost uranium enrichment capacity

TEHRAN – Iran on Saturday announced the details of a fresh move to stray away from its commitments pertaining to the landmark 2015 multilateral nuclear accord, technically known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

According to the announcement, Iran has activated 20 IR-4 centrifuges and 20 IR-6 centrifuges to boost the country’s stockpile of enriched uranium.

The spokesman for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI), Behrouz Kamalvandi, said Saturday that the capacity of these machines is “many times” more than the previous machines.

“We have started lifting limitations on our research and development (R&D) program imposed by the deal … It will include development of more rapid and advanced centrifuges,” Kamalvandi said.

Iran’s new move to drop limitations on its R&D will facilitate the enrichment of uranium up to a level of 1,000,000 separative work units (SWUs), he said.

SWU is the standard measure of the effort required to separate isotopes of uranium during an enrichment process. One SWU is equivalent to one kg of separative work.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been informed about Iran’s new nuclear steps, Kamalvandi said, adding that the IAEA will continue to monitor Iran’s nuclear activities.

On Thursday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that the Islamic Republic will expand its nuclear research and development to set aside the restrictions imposed on the country’s research and development activities in the nuclear deal.

Despite progress in the negotiations between Iran and the European parties to the nuclear deal, “final agreement has not been reached so far” pertaining to Iran’s interests under the deal, Rouhani said.

Rouhani also noted that he would give Europeans two months to fulfill their commitments to shield the Iranian economy from the U.S. sanctions.

Under the accord, Iran was allowed to keep restricted quantities of first-generation centrifuges, no more than 5,060 IR-1 centrifuges, at its two nuclear plants until 2026.

Since May, Iran has already broken away with the restrictions set by the nuclear accord on the stockpile of its low-grade enriched uranium and its concentration in a reaction to the U.S. exit from the international deal last year.

Kamalvandi said that the cuts of commitments are reversible if other parties to the JCPOA fulfill their obligations.

On Saturday, the IAEA said that it has inspectors on the ground in Iran who will be able to look into Tehran’s move to start advanced centrifuges to increase the country’s uranium stockpiles, according to Press TV.

The UN nuclear watchdog said that it is aware of the reports “related to Iran’s centrifuge research and development” and that its “inspectors are on the ground in Iran and they will report relevant activities to IAEA headquarters.”

An IAEA spokesman said on Friday that the acting chief of the agency, Cornel Feruta, plans to visit Iran to hold talks with high-level Iranian officials in Tehran on Sunday.

“The visit is part of ongoing interactions between the IAEA and Iran,” the agency’s spokesman said.

Feruta’s visit to Tehran comes before a quarterly meeting of the IAEA’s Board of Governors in Vienna next Monday.

Iran seizes foreign ship for smuggling fuel in Gulf

TEHRAN – Iranian coast guards have seized a foreign ship for smuggling fuel in the Gulf and detained 12 crew members, Iranian media reported on Saturday.

All the crew members detained are Filipinos, the Ecofars news website reported.

The ship was carrying 283,900 liters of diesel fuel, it said.

Legal measures about the case were carried out by the Iranian judiciary, it added.

Amid the rising tensions between Iran and the United States, which has heightened pressure on Tehran with sanctions including a total oil trade ban, Iran has seized a number of ships for smuggling oil in the Gulf in the past months.

Greece, Czech Republic into last 16 in FIBA World Cup

SHANGHAI – The first round matches of the FIBA World Cup have the last 16 teams finalized on Thursday for the second round.

During the second round, teams advancing from the same group will not play against each other, with the top two teams from each of the further four groups qualifying for the quarterfinals.

NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, with 24 points and 10 rebounds, inspired Greece to a 103-97 victory over New Zealand in Group F. The hard-fought victory granted Greece a berth in the second round, together with Brazil, who continued the momentum after upsetting Greece on Tuesday to have their third victory at the tournament beating Montenegro 84-73.

'I still have question marks over him' – Keane 'worried' about Man Utd new boy Maguire

The 26-year-old defender has made a big impact in the Red Devils’ defence, but one former Old Trafford star is not convinced by him

Manchester United legend Roy Keane says he still has concerns over Harry Maguire’s defensive ability.

The England centre-back joined the Red Devils in a move worth £80 million ($96m), seeing him replace Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk as the game’s most expensive defender.

The 26-year-old has already made four Premier League appearances for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and has been the subject of a lot of praise due to his performances.

Solskjaer has been pleased with the new signing’s impact on the team, while fellow United star Paul Pogba hailed him as a “beast” after his first game for the Old Trafford outfit and Lee Grant and Diogo Dalot have been impressed by how quickly he has settled in.

Meanwhile, Barcelona defender and former United player Gerard Pique described him as a “great” defender and believes he can help his new side compete for the Premier League title for the first time since 2013, and he has been tipped to become a future club captain by Gary Pallister.

But club icon Keane is not so sure about Maguire’s strengths, as he believes he looks vulnerable as a defender sometimes.

“I think he’s done OK,” Keane told ITV.

“We were talking about how good he is on the ball, but defensively I still think he’s… I still have one or two question marks over him.

“I always worry about his pace on the turn, I remember the first goal against Crystal Palace where he’s not doing the basics – covering round his other centre-half.

“Listen he’s 26 years of age now, you’re worried if you’re pointing these things out to him.”

But Keane’s opinion is not shared by another legendary figure in English football, as ex-Arsenal star Ian Wright is convinced Maguire is worth the money United paid for him.

“He’s a good footballer, he’s a very good footballer,” the former striker said.

“He’s gone up the leagues, he’s got better. Now he’s got to Man Utd and it’s the pinnacle really.

“They’ve paid that money for him because he’s worth the money.”

'Society needs to grow up' – Sterling demands an end to racial abuse in football

The 24-year-old says supporters need to recognise football players as human beings as they continue to be targeted by racists across Europe

Raheem Sterling say it is time for society to “grow up” and stamp out racism amid the ongoing abuse directed at players.

There have been a number of incidents of players being subjected to racial abuse in recent weeks, with the likes of Sterling and England team-mate Marcus Rashford being targeted on social media, while Inter striker Romelu Lukaku was the victim of Cagliari fans during a Serie A game.

Although the incidents have been condemned by many figures in football, a group of Inter fans reacted to the Lukaku incident by defending Cagliari supporters from charges of racism, insisting it is not a “real problem” in Italy and urging the Belgian striker to take it as a sign of respect.

Several players have spoken out in the wake of recent attacks, as Rashford said he believes the fight against racism is “going backwards”, while the likes of Manchester United team-mate Chris Smalling, Watford striker Troy Deeney and Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi have all called for it to end.

And England winger Sterling is shocked that the issue continues to affect the game and urged fans to treat footballers as human beings.

“It’s easy to say what happens next but there’s a lot of people behind a computer screen,” the 24-year-old Manchester City star told Sky Sports.

“Those are the ones that are disappointing and feel they can get away with stuff like this.

“We are in 2019 and we’re still talking about this. I can’t say I have the answer to stop it but as a society we need to nail down on this.

“The people doing it need to wake up and understand it’s a new era and discrimination is not something anybody should face.

“We need to grow up as a society and realise we’re only out here doing our jobs. We are human beings and we have feelings.

“It’s a touchy subject but I can’t tell you I’ve got the exact answer. But as a society we need to do better and appreciate each other more.”
