‘Every kid wants to play for Man Utd’ – Wan-Bissaka buying into Solskjaer’s trophy vision

The 21-year-old defender has completed a £50 million transfer to Old Trafford and cannot wait to form part of an exciting project at Old Trafford

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is setting his sights on silverware at Manchester United, with the £50 million ($63m) signing looking forward to turning out for a club that “every kid wants to play for”.

The Red Devils have made the 21-year-old full-back the latest addition to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.

His arrival, coupled with that of Daniel James earlier in the summer, maintains the shift in focus from United when it comes to recruiting exciting talents with bags of potential.

Wan-Bissaka is hoping to prove himself worthy of such faith, with the youngster relishing the opportunity to represent one of the most decorated sides in world football.

“I am excited to have finally signed for this team,” he told United’s official website.

“Every kid wants to play for a team like this. I am grateful and it is an honour to represent this club.

“I think I will improve every step and learn different things around new team-mates. I think Man United is a big club, a big family, a big fan base, and I think they all stick together and are so tight together.”

Wan-Bissaka spoke at length with Solskjaer before making a move to Old Trafford and is buying into the project being pieced together by United’s manager.

“I have spoken to him and he has told me how he feels about me,” added the Red Devils new boy.

“Ole has reassured me about his plans, what he is going to do with the team. That is something I want to be a part of.

“It was the gaffer’s decision and his plan to rebuild, and to bring the team back to where it is supposed to be. I wanted to be a part of that plan.”

The intention is that fresh faces will help United to offer a positive response to their forgettable 2018-19 campaign, with the club eager to ensure that they do not go three years without a trophy.

Wan-Bissaka said when quizzed on his message for an expected fan base: “I just want to say thanks for welcoming me to this amazing club, I can’t wait to see you and get started.

“I think it is an honour to represent this club and I can’t wait to engage with the fans. I have seen the support they give in every game.

“This club is known for winning trophies and I want to be a part of that, to win my first.

“I can see that the fan base is huge and they support the team through thick and thin. I am going to give everything for the club and for the fantastic fans and I can’t wait to get started.”

Soap star offers to kiss Peru player who seals Copa America semi-final win against Chile

The underdogs might have a little surprise waiting if they can triumph against all the odds

Peru will have a little extra motivation to win Wednesday’s’s crunch Copa America semi-final against Chile with soap star Stephanie Cayo offering to kiss the player who gets them through to the tournament final.

Los Incas haven’t made a Copa America decider since they won the 1975 edition, but the 31-year-old entertainer is trying her best to help her nation into the final match against hosts Brazil.

Cayo, who is currently starring in Netflix series Club de Cuervos, used her Twitter account to make the statement to her 800,000 followers.

“We want to give a kiss to the Peru national team. I’m seriously thinking about offering a kiss (obviously with permission) to whoever is responsible for beating Chile on Wednesday,” Cayo posted.

The performer, who is also a singer, songwriter and model, accumulated more than 8,000 likes and 7,000 comments with the two Twitter posts.

Peru qualified for the Copa America knockout stage as one of the third-placed qualifiers, despite a 5-0 thrashing by Brazil in their final group game.

They earned their spot in the semi-final versus Chile following a penalty shootout victory against Uruguay in the quarter-finals, after the match ended goalless in 120 minutes.

The winner of Wednesday’s sudden-death match will get to take on hosts Brazil in the Copa America final at the Maracana on Sunday.

Peru have only ever won two editions of the tournament, in 1939 and 1975, in the only two occasions they have ever qualified for the final.

Chile have lifted the past two Copa Americas in the United States (2016) and on home soil (2015) as they bid to become only the second team to win the tournament three consecutive times.

'I've had more meetings with the chairman than in three years at Newcastle' – Benitez enjoying fresh start in China

The Champions League winning manager is enjoying his new job as he finds himself in vastly different circumstances than at St. James’ Park

Rafael Benitez has revealed he has already had more meetings with club officials in one week with Dalian Yifang than he did during three years at Newcastle United.

Benitez left the Magpies at the end of June when his contract expired and took the surprise decision to continue his coaching career in the Chinese Super League.

After just seven days in the new job, Benitez already feels more valued behind the scenes as he is in regular dialogue with Dalian’s hierarchy – something that was not the case with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley.

“Since the moment of our arrival we have really been touched by the kindness and respect that we have been shown,” the Spaniard wrote in a blog post on his personal website.

“As we all know from experience, in football, just as in everyday life, when people show you respect and affection and do everything they can to make things easier for you, life is much happier, even when you face difficult moments.

“I must say that I have had more meetings with the chairman, the president and the general manager this week than I had in three years at Newcastle.

“They haven’t just been work meetings, rather signs of respect in which we have been able to appreciate the differences and similarities in our cultures.”

Benitez got his reign off to a positive start on the field with a 3-1 win over Henan Jianye on Sunday.

The former Liverpool, Inter and Real Madrid boss revealed he is enjoying the challenge that comes with coaching in another country.

“We’ve hardly been in China for a week and I have seen and experienced so much for the first time, it could easily have already been a month,” he continued.

“My coaching team and I have visited so many countries in the past and we’ve worked for years in Spain, Italy and England. But this experience is like no other.

“Before leading a training session or managing a match I have found some challenges that I haven’t experienced in the other countries where I have worked or visited.

“Most of the players and the people around you don’t understand anything you say and vice versa, so you need a translator by your side at all times, even to transmit the smallest correction in training.”

Arsenal focus remains on Zaha despite £30m Lucas Vazquez link

The Gunners want to sign a winger this summer, and despite reports to the contrary, the Crystal Palace man remains their priority

Wilfried Zaha remains Arsenal’s priority this summer as they look to bring in a winger to bolster their attack.

The Gunners are exploring other options due to the difficulty they face convincing Crystal Palace to part with their star man, but Real Madrid’s Lucas Vazquez is not understood to be on the agenda.

There have been reports in Spain that Unai Emery had identified Vasquez as a target and that the north London club were closing in on a £30 million ($37.7m) deal.

But Vasquez’s focus remains very much on Madrid, despite suggestions that he will soon be on the way out of the club.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have been offered the chance to sign Malcom by Barcelona and Goal has learned there is interest in potentially bringing the Brazilian to the Emirates.

The Gunners pursued the 22-year-old while Arsene Wenger was still in charge before he eventually left Bordeaux for Barcelona last summer.

Malcom failed to make much of an impression at the Liga champions, however, making just 15 league appearances last season, and Barcelona have made it known that he is available at a price of €40m (£36m/$45m). There have been informal talks with several clubs across Europe to try and generate interest, including Arsenal.

Arsenal’s head of football Raul Sanllehi still has strong contacts at Camp Nou following more than a decade with the Catalan giants and is well aware of Malcom’s situation.

But as it stands, Arsenal’s priority in terms of bringing in a winger remains focused on Zaha – despite having had an initial offer knocked back by Palace.

The Gunners bid £40m ($50m) for Zaha last month, but the bid was not even entertained by Palace, who value their winger at around £80m ($100m).

That fee is beyond Arsenal’s price range, but there is a belief that a deal could still be done – possibly with players moving to Selhurst Park from the Emirates.

Palace have an interest in Carl Jenkinson, while Calum Chambers or Mohamed Elneny could also be offered by Arsenal, who will soon make another offer to try and tempt the south London club into doing business.

Zaha – a boyhood Arsenal fan – is desperate to move across the capital.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the 26-year-old’s brother Judicael recently pleaded with Palace to let the winger go.

“Wilfried will always hold Crystal Palace and their fans in the highest regard and all the support they have given means the world to him,” he said.

“It’s my brother’s dream though, to play for Arsenal.

“Given all that Wilfried has given to Crystal Palace to help them remain a Premier League club, I hope Palace will be able to see their way to agreeing a deal with Arsenal that allows Wilfried to realise his dream of playing European football for the club he’s supported since childhood.”

Arsenal, meanwhile, continue to target William Saliba and Kieran Tierney.

Talks over a move for Saliba are ongoing, with Saint-Etienne demanding that the 18-year-old defender remains with them for a further season on loan.

Celtic have already rejected two offers from the Gunners for left-back Tierney, but Arsenal remain hopeful of getting a deal over the line.

Nadal edges Medvedev for 4th US Open title, 19th Slam trophy

NEW YORK — Rafael Nadal held off a strong comeback bid to win his 19th Grand Slam title by edging Daniil Medvedev 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 in a thrilling US Open final that lasted nearly five hours Sunday.

This one was not easy for the second-seeded Nadal. Not at all. That’s because after Nadal grabbed the opening two sets and went up a break in third, Medvedev mounted a charge, shifting styles and rattling Nadal.

Medvedev broke in the last game of each of the next two sets to force a fifth. But his attempt to become the first man since 1949 to win a US Open final after trailing by two sets to none came up just short.

Nadal broke to lead 3-2 in the fifth and again for 5-2. But he failed to serve out the victory there, double-faulting on break point, then couldn’t convert two match points at 5-3.

At 5-4, Nadal saved a break point, and finally converted his third championship point to earn his fourth trophy at Flushing Meadows.

Add that to 12 at the French Open, two at Wimbledon and one at the Australian Open, and Nadal is now only one major trophy behind Roger Federer for the most by a man in tennis history.

International cross-country run held in Gansu

More than 600 runners from home and abroad competed in an international cross-country run held in Yumen, Gansu province, on September 7.

The event was hosted by the Yumen government and was part of the Skyrunner World Series organized by the International Skyrunning Federation.

The run featured a 25 kilometer and a 60 km category this year.

As part of the races, participants ran across the distinctive Danxia landform, the Gobi Desert, mountains, valleys and craters in Northwest China.

Chinese contestants stood out in the races and swept gold medals in the men’s and women’s 25km and 60 km categories.

Indian moon mission suffers setback

India had been over the moon, as it were, preparing to celebrate a historic feat.

Instead, contact was lost with spacecraft Chandrayaan-2 moments before its Vikram module was to make a soft landing on the moon in the early hours of Sunday.

Kailasavadivoo Sivan, chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, or ISRO, said on Sunday afternoon that his agency had managed to locate the lander, Xinhua News Agency reported.

The spacecraft managed to shoot a thermal image of the lander on surface of the moon, media reports quoted him as saying.

By press time, the lander’s condition was yet to be ascertained.

On Sunday morning, he was quoted as saying that the descent had gone “as planned and normal performance was observed till the altitude of 2.1 kilometers”.

Contact was then lost between the control room in India’s southern metropolis of Bangalore and the spacecraft 384,400 kilometers away.

The first words of consolation came from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was at the tracking center to witness the final moments of the lander’s scheduled descent. “In life, there are ups and downs. … You have served the country well and served science and humanity well,” Modi was quoted by local media as saying.

Launched July 22, the unmanned Chandrayaan-2 was India’s chance to become fourth country to land a craft on the moon, following Russia, the United States and China. It intended to accomplish the first soft landing in the moon’s south polar region.

Most importantly, analysts said, the failure denied the country a rare opportunity to search for water and minerals, and also explore minerals such as magnesium, ion and, importantly, helium. The technology of the spacecraft was 100 percent India-made and cost roughly $150 million.

Had the soft landing been successful, the landing module’s Rover may have helped to solve the country’s energy needs, according to a former ISRO scientist. “It could help bring helium-3 which is in abundance on the moon. The moon can become our one and only savior by meeting all the energy needs on Earth,” Arup Dasgupta said.

Sandip Chakrabarti, director at the Indian Centre for Space Physics, said that the ISRO is still a powerful space agency.

Despite its current setback, India became the first Asian country to send an orbiter around Mars on May 5. It also has several ambitious space programs lined up.

Chakrabarti said that the ISRO has the potential to generate funds through commercial ventures.

Asked how India measured up to other countries boasting advanced space technologies, Chakrabarti said: “R&D in India is the weakest compared to the countries with strong space programs. Unless India strengthens R&D, it will be difficult to compete with China and other countries in the long run.”

He said Chandrayaan-2 is doing what NASA did more than 50 years ago and China did by sending Chang’e 4, a robotic spacecraft mission to the moon in January this year.

Better engines

According to him, India needs to have better engines and rockets similar to Falcon of the US or Long March of China.” (India’s) missions are cheaper, but that cannot be the only criterion for winning the race. It must have a solid manned program. In this, China is also well ahead,” Chakrabarti said.

He said if India wants to have a space station, manned missions must become routine. However, he does not foresee India having such a capability in the next few decades.

The country has planned to send a mission to study the sun in 2019-20, a second mission to Mars in 2022-23 and a Venus mission in 2023. It will also attempt to send astronauts to space on a spacecraft in 2022.

New Delhi-based electrical engineer Prasun Dutta said the ISRO deserves appreciation for contributing to the socio-economic development of people as well. “Many of ISRO’s space programs are integral to (India’s) essential needs and national development,” he said.

He said ISRO’s satellites provide nationwide connectivity in terms of voice and data communication. The country’s space agency has launched programs such as telemedicine which network remotely located rural medical facilities to super specialty hospitals in big cities, Dutta said.

Satellite-based weather monitoring and warning system is of immense importance in a country where agriculture, a sector which provides livelihood to millions of people in rural segment but is still critically dependent on the vagaries of nature.

“ISRO’s sensing satellites provide realistic data of India’s land, surface water, ground water, forest and biological resources as inputs to policymaking for governmental authorities,” he said.

Dutta added that the ISRO’s disaster management support program provides space-based inputs which help in management and control of disasters like flood, cyclone, earthquake, forest fire, not only in India but also a few other countries.

Rajeswari Pillai Rajagopalan, distinguished fellow and head of the Nuclear & Space Policy Initiative at the Observer Research Foundation, said India’s space explorations had positive implications beyond its borders.

India launched the first South Asian satellite to enhance communication channels and improve disaster links for its neighbors: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Barcelona set for civil war? How failed Neymar transfer risks splitting dressing room in two

Some players have every right to be furious at being used as makeweights in the bid to sign the Brazilian, while others are upset over the failed move

Even though Barcelona failed to capture Neymar over the summer, his spectre lives on in the Camp Nou dressing room.

The Brazilian’s much-debated possible return dominated the transfer talk in Catalunya and, now that the window has shut, the aftermath of months of rumours, speculation and failed negotiations will be long felt.

All other subjects of conversation at Barca took secondary status to the hope – or fear – that Neymar would be rejoining the Blaugrana ranks. That feeling was stoked by the club itself.

Barca made every single move public in their pursuit of the Paris Saint-Germain forward. The press also gleefully dissected the comings and goings from Barcelona to Paris and back again, to varying degrees of accuracy.

A few prestigious market specialists went as far as to say the deal was closed, an assertion eventually proved false by the facts themselves.

But until the smoke cleared and deadline day passed, tensions within the club continued to grow and, now, one must ask whether Barca’s failed chase was worth all the trouble.

Unless, of course, the objective was never to sign Neymar – but rather to be seen to be trying to sign Neymar.

Whatever the truth, all eyes are now on Ousmane Dembele and Ivan Rakitic.

If the pair really did hold the key to Neymar’s return as transfer makeweights, then their refusal to leave will not sit easily with those who wanted Neymar back, chief among them Lionel Messi.

Dembele, in particular, remains on shaky ground after allegedly hiding the full extent of the injury he suffered in the season-opener against Athletic Club, but Rakitic is a standard-bearer for the club thanks to his six years of sterling service. The Croat has every right to be furious with Barca’s hierarchy.

Distracted from footballing matters, Rakitic has dropped out of the Blaugrana first team and also missed out on a call for the latest international games.

Philippe Coutinho’s agent had an identical complaint when he was told his client still had a place at Camp Nou at the very moment he was being used as a bargaining chip with PSG.

Without Jordi Mestre or Pep Segura – both of whom have left the Barca staff – president Josep Maria Bartomeu took the lead in negotiations. But the club chief has racked up more mistakes than successes in his bid to take the Champions League back to Catalunya before his term ends in two years.

He seems not to have grasped the consequences of his actions. If the intention was to bring Neymar back at any cost, he has failed, and damaged relations with the dressing room by trying to offload players that did not want to leave.

Bartomeu stressed over the weekend that his intention really was to try and sign Neymar, denying claims that he offered players in part-exchange.

“An ‘extra’ became available at one moment of the summer,” the president told Barcelona’s official club website. “We heard Neymar wanted to leave PSG and there was a moment when Leonardo opened the door to negotiations – for other clubs too. We didn’t arrive at a deal because we could not match PSG’s demands.

“Barca never put names on the table, they are players that PSG put there. We could not match their demands.”

Whatever Bartomeu’s intentions and actions, he certainly comes out of this messy episode looking very weak.

PSG are living proof that it takes much more than money to win a Champions League; you also need a plan, but did Barcelona have one?

They are the club that all others aspire to be, but right now the Catalans are divided at every level, from the dressing room to the boardroom – not to mention amongst a restive support.

While it may be true that coach Ernesto Valverde has a better squad than one year ago, the team’s prospects are much reduced.

Neymar has risked splitting Barcelona in two, a poor omen for a team that only triumphs in Europe when everything goes their way.

Only time will tell if Valverde has room to manoeuvre and take Barca out of this pickle. He’s done it before, of course.

Valverde’s first days as Barca coach were overshadowed by the sudden and surprising loss of Neymar to PSG. He went on to lead the Blaugrana to a domestic double.

Back then, though, the dressing room was united in shock at Neymar’s departure. Now, they risk being divided over his failed return.
