'This is up there with the best' – Henderson hails comeback as one of Anfield's greatest nights

The Liverpool captain basked in an incredible come-from-behind victory as the Reds topped Barcelona on Tuesday

Jordan Henderson hailed Liverpool’s comeback as “unbelievable” while calling Tuesday night’s thriller one of the best nights in Anfield’s history.

The Reds were down 3-0 following the Champions League semi-final first leg at Barcelona, as a Lionel Messi masterclass and a goal from former Liverpool star Luis Suarez seemingly doomed the Premier League contenders.

But an early Divock Origi own goal gave the Reds hope and a 1-0 lead at halftime before substitute Georginio Wijnaldum provided two quick goals off the bench to open the second half.

Wijnaldum’s finishes leveled the scoreline at three apiece, but a bit of quick thinking from Trent Alexander-Arnold led to an Origi goal as the full-back quick played a corner to find the Belgian all alone in the centre of the box.

That goal gave the Reds the win and, as Henderson says, arguably the most famous night of all of the famous nights at Anfield

“Unbelievable. I don’t think many people gave us a chance. We knew it would be difficult but still possible,” Henderson said after the comeback.

“The belief we have in the changing room is amazing. We knew we could do something special at Anfield. Look at the fans and the lads – this is a special night. This is up there with the best.

“We wanted to start fast. We got an early goal which helped. It wasn’t just the goal, it was getting after them and putting them under pressure. We knew if we showed personality and heart then we’d have a chance.”

With the win, Liverpool advance to the Champions League final for the second consecutive season, having lost to Real Madrid in last year’s finale.

Once there, they’ll take on either Tottenham or Ajax in Madrid as the Dutch side nurse a 1-0 advantage following a first leg win in London.

Liverpool also have the Premier League to contend with and one more match at Anfield to face as the Reds host Wolves on the final matchday of the league season.

They currently trail Manchester City by one point, and a Reds win coupled with City dropping points against Brighton could see the Reds push on for a Premier League title.

Billy Gilmour: Inside the rise of Chelsea and Scotland's 'new Modric'

Having made his first-team debut at Stamford Bridge in August, the 18-year-old is being tipped for further chances under Frank Lampard this season

With Chelsea coming under increasing pressure to hold out for victory against Sheffield United in their last Premier League outing, it was telling that the player Frank Lampard elected to bring off his bench was an 18-year-old with no prior first-team experience.

It obviously strengthens Lampard’s argument that he will be the manager who finally makes the most of the Blues’ burgeoning academy talents, even if his hands have been tied somewhat by the club’s transfer ban.

But it also illustrates the high regard in which Billy Gilmour is held in west London, and though his late introduction could not stop the newly promoted Blades from grabbing a late equaliser, he was hardly to blame.

The Scotland Under-21 international’s six-minute cameo merely offered few glimpses of his much-touted technical ability, but then, as someone who has studied former Blue Cesc Fabregas closely and been previously likened to Luka Modric, it will come as little shock that he is a midfielder who possesses a rare eye for a pass.

Few Chelsea youngsters break into the club’s first team without having previously spent time out on loan in the modern era, with only Callum Hudson-Odoi taking the path straight from youth football to the Stamford Bridge stage in recent times.

Given the fight that the club put up to sign Gilmour, though, it is hardly surprising that he is being given every opportunity to state his claim for regular minutes.

Both Manchester clubs, Arsenal, Barcelona and Bayern Munich were all reportedly keen on signing Gilmour from Rangers as a 15-year-old in the spring of 2017. Chelsea eventually won the race, completing the deal on his 16th birthday in June of that year as they paid what Goal understands to be a record fee for a player of his age.

Rangers had hoped to be able to fast-track Gilmour into their own first team on account of his rapid development within the Scottish Football Association’s Performance School initiative.

James Grady coached Gilmour from the age of 12 as part of the programme and it was there that the youngster’s unique ability first came to light.

“He knows he doesn’t need to beat five players to look good,” Grady told Goal. “Billy understood it was better to be good than look good at a very early age.

“I describe him as a Modric-type player. He isn’t very big but he is technically as good as anyone with both feet. He has a tenacious side, he won’t overcomplicate things. He can dribble when he has to, he sees passes and he will get it and keep it until he can find a better pass.

“The biggest talent that he has got is that drive and real hunger to be the best. I have worked in football since I was 20 years old. I am 48 now. He is the role model I would still use if you want to get anywhere in football. He is hard-working, nothing is going to stop him.

“He came back to the school after he signed for Chelsea. He did a Q&A and one kid asked him, ‘How was the jump from Rangers to Chelsea?’

“He said, ‘At Rangers, my mindset was I wanted to be the best at my team and club. I want to be the best here. I went to Chelsea, I am now in an environment at Chelsea where I need to try to be the best in the world. Not the best in the club because Chelsea can sign the best young players from all over the world.'”

Scotland have already begun to reap the benefits of that attitude, with Gilmour shining during the 2018 Toulon Tournament despite being a 16-year-old playing at Under-21 level. He was named Revelation of the Tournament as Scotland secured a fourth-placed finish in France despite being among the three youngest players in the competition.

Back at Chelsea, their main area of concern regarding Gilmour, who stands at 5’6″, and his potential to play senior football, has been his slight physique, with Blues coaches looking to ensure he is fully ready for the intensity of the men’s game before making him a staple of Lampard’s squad.

Though his ability on the ball cannot be questioned, he has also been encouraged to watch videos of former Blues schemer Fabregas in a bid to further his understanding of the role Chelsea see him filling in the coming years.

“As a fellow midfielder, I look up to Cesc Fabregas,” the teenager told Chelsea TV in December 2017. “I have been analysing him and putting the things from his game into my game, so overall I can make myself much better as a midfielder.”

Gilmour has demonstrated a silky first touch, excellent vision, high intelligence and a keen eye for goal throughout his early career, while he is looking to become a set-piece specialist too as he works on improving his delivery from corners and shooting on free-kicks.

Nine goals and six assists in 32 games in youth football last season underlined his potential, with Lampard showing an awareness of Gilmour’s supreme talent by naming the teenager on the bench for the UEFA Super Cup clash with Liverpool in August before handing him his Premier League debut three weeks later.

Gilmour’s current contract expires in 2021, and it is understood Chelsea will likely move to renew it in the coming months as his profile begins to grow.

For now, to make it in the game at the top level you need an element of luck. Given everything going on around Chelsea, this may be the best time in more than a decade to be an 18-year-old midfielder looking for first-team chances at Stamford Bridge.

Arsene Wenger set for FIFA role as Arsenal legend returns to football

The former Gunners boss will take up a technical role with football’s international governing body but could well land a managerial job in the future

Arsene Wenger is on the verge of returning to football in a new technical role with FIFA.

The former Arsenal boss has been out of work since ending his 21-year stay in north London in May 2018.

But sources have confirmed to Goal that he will soon be confirmed in a new role at FIFA following prolonged talks with football’s international governing body.

Wenger will take up many of the responsibilities that had been held by Zvonimir Boban, who left his position as Deputy Secretary General at FIFA to become the new Chief Football Officer at AC Milan in May.

But Goal has been told that the Frenchman will be given latitude to define his job as it develops, with FIFA also keen to tap into his vast array of coaching experience and knowledge as they continue to try and develop the game around the world.

How long Wenger remains in the role remains to be seen, however, with the 69-year-old admitting in recent weeks that he still plans on returning to a management role in the future – potentially even for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“I could see myself working for a team,” he told beIN SPORTS.

“I will have enough time and distance with my last job [to give me perspective], and I would not be against that.

“I must say I always wanted to go to the World Cup because I felt it is the job of a manager to be where the best football players in the world play football.

“Hopefully, you will see me, touch wood, in Qatar in three years’ time.”

Wenger has been offered numerous routes back into the game since he took charge of his final match as Arsenal boss at the end of the 2017-18 season.

But he says he deliberately decided to take an extended break to recharge his batteries following his two-decade long stay in the Premier League.

“I enjoyed a bit to take a distance [from football],” he said. “I had a reluctance to go back into the heat again.

“I still cannot live today with the fact that I will never be on the bench again. I might go for an intermediate position.

“What I want for sure is to share what I know, and what I have learnt as much as I can in the game.

“I would like to experience one more time the intensity of the competition.”

Scotland should fast-track Chelsea starlet Gilmour to the senior squad, says former striker Kenny Miller

The retired forward believes his international compatriot should get the chance to shine for his country despite only being a teenager

Former Scotland striker Kenny Miller believes that Chelsea youngster Billy Gilmour should be fast-tracked into the senior national team set-up.

The 18-year-old midfielder joined the Blues from Rangers’ youth academy in the summer of 2017 and has made big strides in his time at the club.

He was promoted from the Under-18s to the Under-23s side after one season and made his first-team debut last month, with Chelsea boss Frank Lampard bringing him off the bench late on in the 2-2 draw against Sheffield United.

Miller is convinced the teenager will become one of his country’s top talents and that Scotland should copy what England did with the youngster’s Chelsea team-mate, Callum Hudson-Odoi, who was handed his first international start before he made the XI for a Premier League match.

“I know him really well and I know what the boy’s about, I know his abilities,” Miller told the BBC.

“Billy Gilmour will be one of the best players in the national team once he gets there, there’s no doubt about it.

“In days gone by, people said you had to go through the proper steps before becoming a full international. But look at England and what they have done in the last few years.

“Callum Hudson-Odoi started an England game before he had started a Chelsea Premier League match.

“I think we could be getting Billy Gilmour in now and there’s probably a few others.

“I know he’s been away with a few camps training and it is a huge step – and especially without first-team football – but we need to get these guys in to progress.

“England can do it. Wales have done it. Can we fast-track him? I also believe you have to have earned that right, but there are exceptions.”

Hudson-Odoi was, however, further along in his development at Chelsea than Gilmour is, having featured regularly in the Europa League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup, starting several times.

Gilmour has played four games for Chelsea’s reserve side so far this season, scoring in a 2-2 with Manchester City in the Premier League 2 and grabbing an assist in a 3-2 victory over Swindon Town in the EFL Trophy.

Messi not friends with Ronaldo but happy to accept dinner date invitation

The Barcelona star admits to not being close with a fellow five-time Ballon d’Or winner, but would be prepared to go for a meal with the Juventus ace

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi admits to not being a close friend of Cristiano Ronaldo, but says he would happily accept a dinner invitation from the Juventus forward.

The two eternal rivals saw their paths cross once more at the recent UEFA awards gala.

Sitting alongside one another on the front row, the pair were asked about their relationship – having spent many years competing for collective and individual prizes.

Ronaldo, who left Messi behind in La Liga when leaving Real Madrid for Juve in 2018, again aired his admiration and respect for his fellow five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Those feelings are mutual, with there never any bad blood between two all-time greats.

With that in mind, and with Ronaldo having suggested that he and Messi should meet up for lunch at some stage , an Argentine icon says he would be happy to spend time in the Portuguese’s company.

Quizzed by Spanish publication Sport on whether he would accept an invitation were a formal one to be tabled, Messi said: “Yes, I don’t have any problem with that.

“I’ve always said that I don’t have any issue with him. We might not be friends because we’ve never shared a dressing room together but I always see him at award shows and there’s no problem.

“We actually spoke with each other for quite a long time at the most recent show.

“I don’t know if there will be a dinner because I don’t know if our paths will cross for obvious reasons, each one of us has our own life and our own commitments. But obviously I would accept the invitation.”

For now, Messi is focused on returning to full fitness at Barca .

He has been nursing a calf complaint since the summer, with the ailment preventing him from playing any part in pre-season and the opening weeks of the 2019-20 campaign.

Ernesto Valverde needs him back as quickly as possible, with the Blaugrana having stumbled out of the blocks, with Messi’s talismanic presence always missed when he is not around.

Messi remains very much the main man at Camp Nou and will once again be competing with Ronaldo, and Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, for FIFA Best and Ballon d’Or gongs in 2019 .

'They're scared of what he can do' – Pepe gives Arsenal fear factor, says Kanu

The Gunners’ record signing averages 3.8 dribbles per game in England’s top flight this season – higher than any other player

Nicolas Pepe already has Premier League defences running scared, according to Arsenal legend Nwankwo Kanu.

The Ivory Coast international arrived at the Emirates during the summer, signing from Ligue 1 side Lille in a club-record £72 million ($89m) deal.

And the 24-year-old winger has already proved to be a real handful in his early appearances for the Gunners, averaging 3.8 dribbles per game, more than any other attacker in the English top flight.

He also became the first player in 50 Premier League matches to dribble past Virgil van Dijk when he skipped past the Liverpool centre-back during his full debut at Anfield.

So it’s been a good start to life in north London for Pepe, who started alongside Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the first time during Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham immediately before the international break.

And Kanu – who won two Premier League titles during his five-year stay with the Gunners between 1999 and 2004 – has already seen enough to know that Pepe will be a huge hit at his former club.

“He’s a good player,” the Nigeria legend told Goal . “He’s got fast feet and I think he can unlock teams. He can score and he can assist.

“The league here is totally different from every other league so it takes time for somebody coming in to perform the way they have for their other clubs. But I think he will do well for us because now he is getting more game time and I believe he will complement the other two strikers.”

Kanu added: “If you watch him you can see he is a really good footballer and his feet are very quick. He is going to score goals and he is going to play well.

“I believe that teams are already afraid of him after a few games. They are scared of what he can do and what he can offer. He’s a very good addition.”

Despite his impressive early-season form, there has been some criticism levelled at Pepe for his finishing.

He scored 23 times for Lille last season but has yet to find the net for Arsenal, despite having some good opportunities.

Against Liverpool he had a great chance to open the scoring after a thrilling solo run, only to shoot tamely at goalkeeper Adrian.

He also blazed an opportunity high and wide late on in the north London derby, with the score locked at 2-2.

But Pepe’s form in front of goal is no concern to Kanu, who scored 44 times in 197 appearances for the Gunners.

“As a striker you want to create chances,” said the 43-year-old. “If you keep missing them it doesn’t matter. The most important thing is to keep creating the chances because the goals will definitely come.

“People have to understand that he [Pepe] has come from a different country, everything is new. He has new team-mates and the coach will definitely want him to play different. All this counts.

“But a good footballer is always a good footballer. He will get much better and he will score goals for us. He brings us something different to the other two strikers.

“I want to just tell him to keep doing what he is doing.”

Rafinha to join Robben and Ribery in leaving Bayern Munich

The Brazil international will depart the Allianz Arena after eight years with the Bundesliga champions when his contract expires this summer

Bayern Munich full-back Rafinha has confirmed that he will leave the Bundesliga giants at the end of the season.

Speaking at a press conference, the 33-year-old admitted that his time with the Bavarians was coming to an end when his contract expires in June.

He joins wing duo Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery in bidding farewell to the Allianz Arena as Bayern begin a period of rebuilding.

Having joined from Genoa in 2011, the Brazil international has gone onto make 266 appearances for Bayern, scoring six goals.

He has helped the club win six successive Bundesliga championships as well as contributing to three DFB-Pokal successes and the Champions League title in 2013 as Jupp Heynckes’ side claimed the treble.

“The eight years have been wonderful, I’ve had some great moments here,” he said as his departure was announced. “The treble in 2013 was special. All things come to an end eventually.

“We are together every day and know each other so well – we are a family. The friendship we all have is the greatest thing.”

Rafinha will hope he can help contribute to winning two further trophies in his final weeks with the club as Niko Kovac looks to end a difficult first campaign in charge with victories in both the Bundesliga and the Pokal.

A win over Eintracht Frankfurt on the final day of the league season will secure a seventh straight domestic title, though a defeat could allow long-time leaders Borussia Dortmund to claw back to the summit with a win of their own over Borussia Monchengladbach.

Bayern then face RB Leipzig on May 25 in the Pokal final, with Kovac looking to defend the trophy he won with Eintracht last season.

Rafinha’s final season with the club has been marred by disputes with Kovac over his lack of playing time.

The former Schalke defender has made just 26 appearances in all competitions, and spoke out in February against what he deemed unfair treatment from his Croatian coach.

“I do my work and train well, but the coach does not count on me,” he told reporters ahead of Bayern’s Champions League meeting with Liverpool.

“I do not know why. I have not made any problems. But of course I am disappointed.”

Rafinha’s next club is yet to be confirmed, though he has been linked with a return to his homeland with Flamengo.

Emery & Arsenal fans told what to expect from summer transfer window

Managing director Vinai Venkatesham has outlined the Gunners’ plans as they prepare to enter another opportunity to recruit in north London

Arsenal will be looking to make “efficient” additions during the summer transfer window, rather than embarking on an elaborate spend, says managing director Vinai Venkatesham.

The Gunners have become famed for their frugal approach to recruitment.

Arsene Wenger always had one eye on the club’s bank balance during his iconic reign in north London.

Unai Emery would have liked to see the purse strings loosened a little, but he is also having to work with a limited budget.

There is little indication of that stance being relaxed in 2019, with Venkatesham looking for Arsenal to find value for money while managing an ever-increasing collection of lucrative salaries.

He told the club’s official website: “We need to continue to look at our wage bill.

“We’ve got, and it’s well known, a large wage bill – that’s a good thing. That demonstrates the financial power and the financial muscle of Arsenal, which is important for us to be successful.

“But we need to make sure we are spending that money as efficiently as possible, and we are spending a lot of time focusing on that.

“Of course we need to be sensible and we need to be efficient in the transfer window.

“We need to sign excellent players, we need to make sure those players can make a real contribution.

“And if I look back to the last transfer window, with Bernd Leno, Matteo Guendouzi, Lucas Torreira, Papa Sokratis and others, we think we bring in players that can make a really big impact.

“And we believe that those players, and many more, can make a bigger impact next season.

“We need to be sure that when we are selling players we are maximising the funds that we can get when we sell players, because all of those funds just get reinvested back into the team.”

Emery has previously stated that he is looking for more funds to be made available, but the Spaniard may have to spread his budget a little thinner than he had hoped.

He has said: “I think we can improve first, by spending money to achieve players.

“In the past the club have done great work in watching players, finding and signing young players and developing our players in the academy.

“I have big respect for our work, for our players in the academy.

“I want to develop the players here – giving them progress to achieve something at a big club like we are.

“We can also achieve [buy] some players who are in other teams, who can come here and give us this performance – like [Virgil] Van Dijk with Liverpool.”

Human destiny tied to nature

The Beijing International Art Biennale puts a spotlight on the environment, Lin Qi reports.

The wildfires that are burning the Amazon rainforest in South America for weeks now have alarmed people in different parts of the world.

The incident also shows the impact of human activities on fragile ecosystems.

That environmental degradation is a global problem which needs to be addressed by all, regardless of ethnic, cultural or social differences, is an idea being expressed by many artists participating in the eighth edition of Beijing International Art Biennale.

The event being held at the National Art Museum of China through Sept 20 is exhibiting more than 600 artworks submitted from across the world to address this year’s theme-a colorful world and a shared future-drawn from individual experiences of dealing with common concerns in society.

Manchester United vs Cardiff City: TV channel, live stream, squad news & preview

The Red Devils are set to end their disappointing season with nothing to play for as Solskjaer prepares reshuffle his squad

Manchester United will play host to Cardiff in their final Premier League game of the season, heading into the last day of the campaign marooned on 66 points and having waved goodbye to playing in the Champions League next term.

It has been a disappointing campaign under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whose reign at Old Trafford started strongly with six straight league wins. Man Utd’s form has dwindled in the closing stages of the season, however, crashing out of Europe to Barcelona and abandoning their hopes of Champions League football following a stale 1-1 draw against Huddersfield in their penultimate league game.

United are the only top six side not competing for a trophy this season, with City on course to win the Premier League and having won the Carabao Cup, while Tottenham and Liverpool are facing off in the Champions League final and Arsenal and Chelsea as Europa League finalists.

A spot in next season’s Europa League is confirmed, however, and Solskjaer will be expected to do a major squad rehaul this summer.

Man Utd have no chance of playing in the Champions League season, blowing their last hopes last week with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Huddersfield. A spot in the Europa League has been confirmed, though an entry in the group stage will be confirmed with a fifth-placed finish.

Should Solskjaer’s men finish in sixth – which is awarded a Europa League place because Manchester City won the Carabao Cup but will be in the Champions League – their position of entry to Europe will depend on who wins the FA Cup.

And so, with nothing left to play for save for their own supporters, United should finish their league season with a victory over Cardiff to ensure that they start their summer on the right foot.

United are expected to undergo major squad surgery during the transfer window, with Ander Herrera the first to have confirmed his departure after five years at Old Trafford.

“There is red in my heart, I knew it from the first time I played here and in the moment that I started to wear it,” the Spaniard said in a farewell video released by the club.

“A club with thousands of fans that respect and remember all the players who give everything.

“I felt special when I heard my name chanted. I felt proud when the fans decided I was part of this incredible history.”

The final game against the Welsh side is set to be Herrera’s final appearance in the United shirt, while the fates of Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez are also up in the air following inconsistent and lukewarm seasons. Antonio Valencia and Juan Mata are also expected to be shown the door this summer.

Though Solskjaer was announced as the club’s permanent manager after taking over from Jose Mourinho on an interim basis in December, former Tottenham coach Tim Sherwood believes that that hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility of Mauricio Pochettino taking the reigns at the north London club.

“Manchester United decided to go down the Solskjaer route but that’s not a guarantee Pochettino won’t be in their dugout in the near future,” he told Bwin .

“If United decide they’ve made a mistake, Tottenham are back to square one sweating over Pochettino’s future.

“That’s the stranglehold that a Manchester United can have on you as one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
