'I'm still writing my own story' – Neymar downplays claims he is the best Brazilian since Pele

The Paris Saint-Germain forward does not feel he is any more significant than his Selecao predecessors having not yet finished his own career

Neymar has downplayed claims that he is the best Brazilian since Pele, claiming that each of the Selecao’s stars in the ‘post-Pele era’ have written an important chapter in the nation’s history.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward has scored 60 goals in 96 appearances for his country but does not feel he has done enough to elevate his status above that of previous greats.

When asked who the greatest Brazilian was since Pele, the 27-year-old was reluctant to pick out an individual.

“I can’t really decide who the second or first best player is after Pele,” Neymar said in an exclusive interview with DAZN and Goal.

“For me, we are all important. In the past I’ve said that every one of us has made history, every one played in a different way and every one has been important at a certain moment.

“There are names that will forever remain etched in history, there will always be important Brazilians in football. Ronaldo, Romario, Ronaldinho Gaucho, Kaka, Zico, Rivaldo – I could go on forever.

“There are many players who were important in their own unique way, that’s why it’s so difficult to just pick one.

“Roberto Carlos, for example, wasn’t an attacker but is still a player with an incredible story.  So to me, it doesn’t make a lot of sense to rank the best players in the ‘post-Pele era’.

“I have a lot of respect for the players who made history in the past, all the players that have been called up to the Brazil national team, because they are an example to me, they are my idols. Every single one of them is important.”

He also insisted that, until his career is complete, it would be impossible to paint an accurate picture of his influence on Brazilian football.

“I’m still writing my story. I’m only 27 years old and still have a few years ahead of me. It’s obvious that up until this point I’ve been able to reach some important milestones, but I have no intention to stop here.

“I could be counted amongst [the previous Brazil legends]. I’m writing my own story and shaping the future that I want for myself. I’ve reached certain objectives so far that could maybe put me on the same level as those players. But every single one of these great players is important in his own way.”

Neymar also opened up on his footballing hero – the player he idolised as a young boy.

“My football idol is Robinho. I’ve been a fan of him since I was a child, I always wanted to become like him.”

Reform plan to make land use approval easier

The Ministry of Natural Resources has recently issued a notice aiming to conduct nationwide reform to integrate certifications and regulations related to the planning of land use.

“The reform is expected to provide conveniences and benefit the people, optimize the business environment, enhance market vitality and promote stable economic operation and sustainable social development,” Zhao Long, deputy head of the ministry, said on Friday.

According to the notice, the approval of a construction project’s site selection and the approval of the project’s land use pre-examination will be integrated into one approval of land use pre-examination and site selection.

Furthermore, the previous planning license for construction land and the approval for construction land will be merged into one planning license.

The acceptance procedure, which includes the mapping and planning verification that should be conducted after a construction project is finished, will also be simplified according to the notice.

“Before the reform, a construction project’s approval and acceptance were handled by different departments, which resulted in a waste of human resources and increased the burden on the applicants,” said Yan Qin, director of the ministry’s state territorial use management department.

She said Zhejiang province has conducted a pilot program to simplify the acceptance process for construction projects.

In Yiwu city, the time for a real estate project’s acceptance mapping has been reduced from about two months to 15 working days.

According to Yan, the reform will simplify the materials that are required to be submitted for those construction projects.

Local natural resources departments will also be asked to remove unnecessary or repetitive notices and regulations related to land use.

“We will speed up the construction of the shared-information platform between different departments,” she said.

“Applicants will no longer be asked to provide certificates or documents that can be found on the platform.”

Thanks to the reform, Yan said more services will also be available online or through mobile phone apps in the near future.

According to the ministry, the reform notice was made based on public requests for advice from local natural resources departments, enterprises and industrial organizations.

“We encourage local natural resources departments to conduct the reform creatively and bravely to significantly improve efficiency and benefit people,” Zhao said. “The ministry would like to promote those successful experiences nationwide.

“Also, the reform should be conducted under the principle of transparency. We welcome public participation and supervision and will treat problems during the reform seriously.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain: Selfish Salah doesn’t pass to us!

The Reds midfielder believes his team-mate needs to be focused on the net if he is to keep up his goal-scoring numbers

Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is happy for Mohamed Salah to keep being selfish, as long as he continues scoring the goals that win matches for the Anfield side.

The Egyptian was on the receiving end of criticism from Sadio Mane in the Reds’ 3-0 victory over Burnley last month.

Salah’s failure to pass the ball on a number of occasions to better positioned team-mates at Turf Moor sparked the ire of his fellow forward, though the pair have since reconciled.

Still, Oxlade-Chamberlain, speaking on Football Focus’ ‘Finish the Sentence’, made light of the incident when asked to complete the phrase ‘Mohamed Salah isn’t selfish because…’

“Isn’t selfish?” the England international quipped to BBC Sport . “Are you winding me up? The guy doesn’t pass to us. Are you mad? Ask Sadio!

“No, Mo Salah isn’t selfish because he’s a goalscorer,” he added. “He’s got to do that. We can’t expect him to pass us the ball all the time and him to score loads of goals.

“The way he plays wins us games, so he’s got to do what he’s got to do. He scores, we win the game. I’m happy. Mo, do what you want!”

Salah is likely to start against his former club when Jurgen Klopp’s side face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The attacker will not only come up against his old club, but an old team-mate in Frank Lampard, with the pair playing together at the London side for six months before Lampard’s Chelsea career came to an end.

Salah moved to Stamford Bridge in 2014 but struggled for game time under Jose Mourinho, and made loan moves to both Fiorentina and Roma, with the latter then making the switch permanent in 2016.

After a hugely successful season in Serie A, Liverpool broke their transfer record to sign the winger, who went on to net 32 times in his first domestic campaign with the Reds, breaking the Premier League record for goals in a 38-game season.

Liverpool sit top of the table after five games, and could maintain their 100 percent record with a win over Frank Lampard’s side as they seek a sixth successive victory.

Chelsea, meanwhile, join a host of teams on eight points after their two victories, two draws and a loss.

The two clubs have already faced each other this season as the Blues lost out on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup in Istanbul in August.

'It's worrying' – Suarez calls for inquest after Barca hit 25-year low

The Catalans have made their worst start to a La Liga season since 1994-95, with the striker concerned by their latest poor result

Luis Suarez has admitted that Barcelona’s form is worrying after losing 2-0 to Granada on Saturday, with the reigning Liga champions having registered only two wins in five domestic league matches this term.

Goals from Ramon Azeez and Alvaro Vadillo moved promoted Granada top of the table and deepened Barca’s growing crisis.

They are without a win in seven away games in all competitions, while their start to the new La Liga campaign is their worst in 25 years.

Regardless of their poor form, however, Barca are only three points off the top of the table and Suarez called for Ernesto Valverde’s side to buck up their ideas quickly.

“It’s a worrying defeat, a defeat that hurts and a defeat that we have to take a real good look at, because there are lots of things that we have to improve,” the Uruguayan said after the match.

“You can’t go behind so early. That made everything that bit tougher for us. We had possession of the ball, but we couldn’t make it count. We have to analyse what happened.”

A poor conclusion to last season saw the Blaugrana wobble their way to the Spanish top-flight title, while a Champions League thumping at the hands of eventual champions Liverpool, as well as losing the Copa del Rey final to Valencia, appeared to be the beginning of a concerning trend.

Suarez, however, feels it is wrong to include results from the previous campaign as part of Barca’s current woes.

“It’s not right to mix these results with the ones from last season,” he added.

“What we have to look at is the way we’re performing on the road, because the lack of cutting edge and chances is worrying.

“We’re Barca, we have to go out there to win the game; we can’t start the way we did.

“There’s a long way to go yet, but these are the types of games that win you the title. We have to be tougher if we’re going to win the league. We have a tough year ahead of us.”

The club currently sits seventh in La Liga with seven points from their five league matches.

Granada, meanwhile, currently lead the league with 10 points, although Sevilla and Real Madrid can move top from their clash on Sunday.

Barcelona will next turn focus towards a home match against Villarreal on Tuesday before a visit to Getafe next weekend.

After that, Barca will face off with Inter in the Champions League, having settled for a scoreless draw with Borussia Dortmund in their opener.

'We don't want to be remembered for only winning the Champions League' – Alexander-Arnold backs Liverpool for more trophies

The right-back wants fans to lose count of how many titles his side win, and thinks their title rivals have given them a lesson in how to do it

Trent Alexander-Arnold says Liverpool have learned from the example set by Manchester City last season as the defender looks to add even more trophies to the club’s collection after claiming the Champions League last season.

After lifting their sixth European title at the end of last season, Jurgen Klopp’s side immediately set their sights on winning the club’s first league title of the Premier League era.

Liverpool have started the campaign in relentless form and will look to make it six wins from six as they travel to Chelsea on Sunday. After seeing City win their last 14 games to pip them to the title last season, Alexander-Arnold says Liverpool know the standard they have to set.

“I’m sure we picked up things from how City won last year,” he told the Daily Mail . “They showed us how winning’s done. They were relentless.

“Losing the title was the worst feeling many of us had ever felt in football. Coming so close to something. Coming so close to feeling as though you have made something of yourself and made your family proud and then in a split second, you feel as if you have let everyone down in the world, you feel as if you weren’t good enough.

“You can’t dismiss one trophy to go after another. Why not go for both? We have got the quality in the squad. We want to win everything. We have to be selfish about that.

“We don’t want to give other teams an easy route into winning trophies. We want to dominate on all fronts, get to finals, go to Wembley in May every season, be around the title race every season.”

After losing in the final of the Champions League, Europa League and Carabao Cup, Liverpool’s Champions League triumph over Tottenham saw Klopp and Liverpool get a monkey off their back with a first title under the German.

But for the Scouser Alexander-Arnold, European football’s biggest title isn’t enough. He says he wants fans to lose count of the number of trophies they win.

“When we won the Champions League last season, the celebrations were incredible,” he added. “But it wasn’t even a week of pure joy. We still weren’t satisfied. The attitude was that it would have been better if it was the double that we had done. We told ourselves that that was what we needed to push for this season.

“We don’t want to be remembered as that Liverpool team that only won the Champions League. We want to be the team that people can’t remember how many trophies we have won because we won so many. If someone mentions Liverpool winning the Premier League, we want people to say, ‘Which one?’ or ‘What year was that? Was that number 19? Was that 21?'”

“We want people to be confused about how many trophies we won. We don’t want to be remembered as the team who missed out to Manchester City in a great title race. We don’t want to be the team that nearly did it. We want to be the team that did it.”

'People are stupid' – Ronaldo annoyed by theories about hand gesture versus Atletico

The Juventus forward scored the winning goal against Hellas Verona in Serie A, days after missing the chance to do so in the Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t amused by fans taking the wrong message from his hand gesture after missing a late chance for Juventus in their 2-2 draw against Atletico Madrid in midweek.

The former Real Madrid man, who has a fiery relationship with Atletico fans, gestured to the home fans after failing to cap a superb solo run with a fitting finish in the dying seconds of the game.

Most took it as Ronaldo mocking the Atletico fans for being nervous, while he said after the game that it meant: “Learn, you have to learn.”

Ronaldo scored the winning goal from the spot in Juventus’ 2-1 win at home to Hellas Verona on Saturday and, asked about the gesture again, told Sky Sport Italia: “People like to talk too much. That’s all. People are stupid and talk too much.”

Juventus were far from at their best against Verona, having to come from behind after Miguel Veloso opened the scoring with a stunning shot from range. Veloso’s goal came just seconds after Verona had remarkably hit the woodwork with both a penalty and the resulting rebound.

Aaron Ramsey equalised with a goal on his first Serie A start, before Ronaldo scored what turned out to be the winner shortly after half-time.

Ronaldo also had shouts for another penalty waved away, as he claimed a Verona defender had handballed.

Juve are still adjusting to life under Maurizio Sarri, but Ronaldo doesn’t think there was anything unusual about his side being below their best after their efforts in the week.

“The important thing is that the team won,” he added. “We were tired after the Champions League, which is only natural after the travelling, the intense match in Madrid, but we were able to get it done.

“The referee didn’t give the penalty, it doesn’t matter, I thought it was a penalty.”

Juventus will be looking for a strong finish to September, as they face league clashes with minnows Brescia and SPAL.

They then begin October with a return to Champions League action at home to Bayer Leverkusen, before travelling to title challengers Inter in what could be one of the defining fixtures of the Italian season.

Former Spurs star Mido sacked by club after allegedly insulting fan

While the ex-forward insists his Twitter account was hacked, his Saudi employers have made the decision to remove him from his post

Saudi Pro League side Al Wehda have relieved former Egypt and Tottenham star Mido of his coaching duties after allegedly insulting a fan who asked him to resign.

Mido, 36, represented the likes of Spurs, Ajax, Marseille and Roma in a well-travelled playing career, while also playing for his nation on 51 occasions, scoring 20 goals.

But having taken over the job in Saudi Arabia at the end of 2018, he has now been removed after clashing with a Wehda supporter on social media.

“Please, resign from your rule as Al Wehda coach, we understand your coaching style, but it is not helpful, it is better for you to be a pundit, your words are good, but as coach you are not so good,” wrote the fan on Twitter.

Mido’s alleged reply on Twitter was highly controversial in Saudi Arabia, as he hit back using a word that is considered a vile insult in the country.

The former Tottenham Hotspur forward later claimed that his Twitter account was hacked and that he didn’t type the vulgar tweet, which has since been deleted.

Mido eventually accepted parting ways with Al Wehda and thanked them for his experience at the club.

“Mido has not been sacked for tactical reasons, but because of a tweet he posted on his official account,” Wehda vice-president Abdallah Khokair explained.

“The fans are a red line, and we hope that his account was hacked, but tactical-wise, Mido’s stint was special.

“Mido has made the league more competitive by drawing with Al Hilal and losing to Al Nassr. We also managed to beat Al Ahli and pick up many points during his time at the club,” he added.

The 36-year-old is also a popular football television presenter in the middle east region and is looking to prove his innocence.

“I respect the decision of the board, but my account was hacked and I’m going to use all my legal tools to prove it,” he stated following his dismissal.

Chilean manager Alvaro Vidal now takes over at Al Wehda, becoming the club’s third coach of the season after Fabio Carille and Mido.

Rashford faces fight to win England place back – Shearer

The Manchester United forward has been warned by a former Three Lions frontman that he has work to do on the back of an injury-enforced absence

Marcus Rashford has been starring for Manchester United, but Alan Shearer says an injury-enforced absence has left the 21-year-old facing a fight to win back his place in the England team.

Having enjoyed a productive run for the Red Devils as a central striker under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, much was expected of an exciting frontman heading into the start of Euro 2020 qualification.

Rashford was, however, to see a niggling ankle problem force him to withdraw from Gareth Southgate’s squad.

As he was left to watch on from afar, Raheem Sterling netted a hat-trick in a 5-0 demolition of the Czech Republic which also saw Jadon Sancho impress on his first start for the Three Lions.

Callum Hudson-Odoi was another to catch the eye when stepping off the bench, while Harry Kane added another effort to his prolific goal haul from the penalty spot.

England now boast an abundance of riches in the attacking department and that could leave those on the fringes of the fold with a tough task reclaiming a starting berth.

Former Three Lions striker Shearer said in The Sun: “We didn’t even mention the name of one of the best young strikers around because we were enjoying Friday night’s goal-fest at Wembley so much.

“But Marcus Rashford was back at Manchester United watching his pals run rings around Czech Republic and smashing five goals past them.

“He will already know he’s got to go again to force his way into the team.

“Gareth and his assistant Steve Holland are in the very nice situation of not missing big players when they are injured.

“I can’t remember the last time we talked like that.

“Jesse Lingard and John Stones were also out from midfield and defence respectively. Both were stars in Russia.

“We’ve now got four or five potential starters who weren’t even involved at the World Cup — Ben Chilwell, Callum Hudson-Odoi, the mightily impressive Jadon Sancho and Declan Rice, who came off the bench against the Czechs.

“It’s just very, very positive and I don’t blame people for getting carried away.

“But, look, it’s going to be very tough for us to win the Euros in 2020.

“Two of the other semi-finalists in the World Cup were Belgium and France so there’s plenty to beat. Plus the likes of Portugal and a new-look Germany.”

England’s next opportunity to put down a marker arrives on Monday when Southgate’s side travel to Montenegro seeking to take another positive step towards next summer’s European Championship.

They also have the Nations League finals to take in this summer, with a semi-final showdown with the Netherlands set to be staged on June 6.

'I'm speechless' – Hudson-Odoi 'absolutely delighted' after record-setting debut

Gareth Southgate handed the youngster his England debut on Friday, leaving the 18-year-old lost for words

Callum Hudson-Odoi was “speechless” after becoming the youngest player to represent England in a competitive international during Friday’s 5-0 hammering of the Czech Republic.

England were on top form at Wembley, tearing their visitors apart and making an emphatic start to Euro 2020 qualifying.

Raheem Sterling was the pick of the bunch with a hat-trick, but Hudson-Odoi – who replaced the Manchester City star – had a hand in the final goal, as goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka parried his shot and Tomas Kalas put into his own net with a woeful first touch.

Hudson-Odoi was making his first appearance for England despite not having started a Premier League game for Chelsea yet, and he was left struggling to comprehend his situation.

“I’m absolutely delighted,” the 18-year-old told ITV . “I just want to thank everyone who’s helped me get where I am today.

“Obviously the opportunity to come on in front of a home crowd was absolutely amazing. I can’t believe it, I’m speechless.”

The winner of Goal’s 2019 NxGn, Jadon Sancho , also enjoyed a lively match after making his first senior start, setting up Sterling’s first and catching the eye with his silky footwork.

Initially he looked a little nervous, but support from captain Harry Kane helped him get back on track.

“He [Kane] just said keep being positive, as the first couple of one-on-ones didn’t go my way,” said the Borussia Dortmund star.

“He just said that and I stuck to the plan. In training, me and ‘H’ have a special connection, so once he touched the ball [in the build-up to Sterling’s opener], I knew he was going to do a reverse pass in behind and it was an easy goal for Raheem.

“In training he speaks to me, he gives me advice, tells me to be confident on the ball, off the ball, just keep working hard. Coming from the captain and such a great player, it’s a nice boost.”

Solskjaer targets Premier League title for Man United after permanent appointment

The Norwegian is setting his sights high after being rewarded for an impressive interim spell in charge with a three-year contract

New Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has set his sights on winning the Premier League but concedes it is going “to be a mountain to climb”.

Solskjaer was appointed on a three-year deal by United on Thursday following a successful spell in charge on an interim basis after Jose Mourinho’s dismissal in December.

The Norwegian, who left Molde to return to the club he played for 366 times, won his first eight games in all competitions before inspiring an injury-hit United to the Champions League quarter-finals with a comeback win against Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain.

United have not won the Premier League title since Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge in 2013, but Solskjaer says he has every intention of returning the Red Devils to the top of the English game.

“To lift the Premier League trophy again is what we expect, what we’re used to, what we have done so many times,” he told a media conference.

“We can’t wait too many years but it’s not going to happen overnight.

“I’m just going to be myself as I’ve always been. I know the trade of course. I want us to lift trophies, but I can’t wait to get to the challenge of improving the squad.

“We have worked with them, for three months and the improvement is there to be seen. We know there is so much more to come from them.

“Every day in training the attitude has been fantastic but we know we’ve a long way to go. It’s going to be a mountain to climb but we’ve climbed a few mountains before.”

United are in a battle with Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea for just two spots in next season’s Champions League and Solskjaer wants his current players and potential targets to know that if they do not make it this time, they will not have to wait long to play in European football’s showpiece event.

“The lure of Champions League is important for some players but to play for Manchester United you know you will be here playing Champions League over your contract,” he added.

“We are in a great position to get in the Champions League but that’s not decided until May 12. We probably need to get going before then with talks with players to come in and who’s going to stay.”
