Monterrey cruises past Atlanta United into CCL semifinals

The MLS side couldn’t close the gap on the Liga MX giants after a disastrous first leg, leaving Sporting Kansas City as the league’s last hope

Atlanta United couldn’t pull off the miracle the club needed to advance to the Concacaf Champions League semifinals on Wednesday, winning 1-0 on the night but losing out 3-1 on aggregate to Liga MX club Monterrey.

The defending MLS Cup winners came into the match three goals down following a disastrous first leg in Mexico, where the Five Stripes fell 3-0 to Liga MX giants Monterrey.

But any dreams of a second-leg turnaround at home have now been dashed, with Atlanta only able to manage a 1-0 win in the club’s home leg.

That result sees the Five Stripes bounced out of the CCL, leaving just one MLS side still in contention for the title.

Atlanta had a number of chances to climb back into the tie, with Monterrey goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero coming up with a massive save to deny Josef Martinez in the early going as the MLS outfit looked to get off to a dream start.

Martinez was played through on goal just nine minutes into the match and tried to slip the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper, who got down well to palm it away.

Gonzalo “Pity” Martínez also put in a strong showing for Atlanta, putting in a number of dangerous chances only to see them either fly high of the mark or be pushed aside by Barovero.

Josef Martínez did finally break the deadlock in the 77th minute, finishing off a Darlington Nagbe pass to get the home side on the board, but it was nowhere near enough to see the club move on in the competition.

Atlanta joins the New York Red Bulls, Toronto FC and the Houston Dynamo as MLS teams to have been knocked out of the competition, with Sporting Kansas City now the league’s last hope at glory in the competition.

Sporting trails Panama’s Independiente 2-1 heading into Thursday’s second leg in Kansas City.

Former Barcelona winger Deulofeu open to Guardiola reunion at Man City

The Spaniard is currently in the Premier League at Watford, but openly admits that he has aspirations of climbing back up the ladder at some stage

Gerard Deulofeu would welcome the opportunity to be reunited with former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, with the Watford winger determined to join “a top team” at some stage.

The talented 24-year-old has already graced some of the grandest stages in Europe, with his professional career starting after stepping out of a famed academy system at Camp Nou.

Two spells have been taken in at Barca, while also spending time with the likes of Everton and AC Milan.

Dueloefu is now back in the Premier League at Watford but is making no secret of his desire to secure a high-profile switch elsewhere once he has proven himself deserving of such a move.

The Spain international told Reuters:  “Watford has a certain profile but for now it’s not a top club.

“We’re eighth in the table, fighting to finish seventh and qualify for Europe, but I cannot close the door to other teams.

“I’m focused on Watford but of course my objective is to play for a top team, that’s normal, just like any other professional.”

Deulofeu’s next outing for the Hornets could come against defending champions Manchester City and the familiar face of Guardiola.

He added on the man who helped to mould his game in Catalunya: “Guardiola was a very special coach for me, the first when I was at Barcelona.

“He is a great coach, a lovely person and I have very good memories of that time but I would have liked to have had a full year with him.

“I was very young and I wasn’t in the dressing room much, but I’m very grateful for the opportunities he gave me.”

Quizzed on whether he would like to link up with Guardiola again one day, possibly at the Etihad Stadium, Deulofeu said: “Of course, that’s why I keep working.

“I like their wingers a lot, [Kevin] De Bruyne, [Leroy] Sane, [Raheem] Sterling and [Riyad] Mahrez, they are guys who play as I do, so why not?

“I’m going to fight for that, although for now, I’m focused on doing well at Watford.”

Deulofeu has registered six goals and five assists this season, making history in the process by becoming the first Watford player to record a Premier League hat-trick during a recent 5-1 win over Cardiff.

Real Madrid in chaos as Perez row leaves Ramos future in doubt

A row between the club’s president and their captain has left the future of the defender in doubt following a devastating week for the Spanish giants

Real Madrid have been left in chaos following an argument between Florentino Perez and Sergio Ramos that has left a deep divide between the club’s front office and the club captain, Goal understands.

The confrontation took place following the club’s loss to Ajax in the Champions League and has left the future of the defender in doubt.

Ramos and Perez were both left angered by a meeting they had following Tuesday’s loss in which Perez expressed his disappointment with the team and its current form.

Perez came into the Madrid dressing room following the loss and berated the players for their performances and lack of dedication to the club, leading to harsh feelings among the playing staff.

Then, following a meeting with manager Santiago Solari in which the Argentine could not be convinced to step down from his position, Perez and Ramos had a tension-filled exchange of their own that left both sides furious, the defender reportedly blaming the club’s hierarchy for poor planning.

The club are now upset with the attitude of their captain, while the defender is of the belief that he has always represented the club to the fullest and has given his all for Real Madrid.

Ramos believes he is being blamed for the bad performances of the team and with the situation they currently find themselves in, and finds the criticism to be very unfair to him, leaving he and Madrid on the verge of a breakdown.

Ramos has a contract until 2021 and a buyout clause of €200 million (£171m/$224m), and the next few days will be key in player and club trying to rebuild their relationship.

Real Madrid are already set to move on from Solari, with Jose Mourinho in line to take over for the rest of the season.

Sunday is set to be the final match Solari takes charge of with a change expected to be made on Monday, in part to help stop the chaos the club find themselves in, though the future for Ramos remains up in the air following his argument with Perez.

Madrid take on Valladolid on Sunday as they look to rebound from a disastrous week.

Arsenal & Man Utd warned 'whoever loses won't be in the top four'

Former Gunners midfielder Paul Merson believes Sunday afternoon’s showdown at Emirates Stadium is a must win game for both teams

Whoever loses this weekend’s huge Premier League fixture between Arsenal and Manchester United will ultimately miss out on a top-four spot, according to Paul Merson.

The two rivals are scheduled to meet in north London on Sunday with just one point separating them in the table, as the battle for the final Champions League place begins to intensify.

United currently occupy fourth spot but the Gunners are breathing down their necks, while Chelsea are also in the running only a point further back with a game in hand.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Red Devils head into the clash full of confidence after a stunning Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain in midweek .

The Norwegian has won all nine of his away games in charge at Old Trafford and his team will be slight favourites at the Emirates.

Arsenal will be hoping to bounce back from a disappointing Europa League defeat at Rennes on Thursday night, which ended a six-match unbeaten run for Unai Emery’s men.

Merson, who played for the Gunners between 1985 and 1997, insists that neither team can afford to lose, while questioning United’s chances of conquering Europe this season.

United could qualify for next year’s competition if they manage to win the Champions League, and the same goes for Arsenal in the Europa League.

“I think a lot of the top-four race goes down to this game on Sunday,” Merson told Sky Sports. “That’s why it’s a massive football match, whoever loses won’t be in the top four.

“But if Arsenal lose they’ve still got a chance in the Europa League. People are telling me Manchester United could go on and win the Champions League, I’m not sure about that.”

The Red Devils won Europe’s second-tier competition back in 2017, which bailed them out after a sixth-place Premier League finish.

Merson feels that Arsenal are still capable of qualifying via that unorthodox route, as he backed his old club to overturn a 3-1 deficit at home to Rennes next week .

He added: “I think it’s the same for Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, the longer you stay in these tournaments you can get into the scenario of what Manchester United did the other year – they stayed in the Europa League and put all their eggs in that basket and couldn’t get in the top four.

“I think it’s important for Arsenal and Chelsea to do that at the moment. I think Arsenal will go through, I think they’ll have far too much for them in the second leg but there are some very good teams still left in it.”

Raphael Wicky hired as U.S. Under-17 national team coach

The former FC Basel boss will take charge of a U.S. U-17 team favored to qualify and perform well at the Under-17 World Cup

U.S. Soccer has a plethora of youth national team coaching vacancies, but have managed to fill one of the more important positions with a head coach who boasts an impressive international resume.

Former Switzerland international and FC Basel manager Raphael Wicky has been hired as the new U.S. Under-17 men’s national team head coach, U.S. Soccer announced on Friday.

Wicky will take charge of the U.S. U-17s as they prepare for the upcoming Concacaf Championships, which take place from May 1-16 in Bradenton, Florida. The United States will face Canada, Barbados and Guatemala in the group stage as the Americans attempt to qualify for the Under-17 World Cup, which takes place in October (a host nation still needs to be chosen after the tournament was pulled from original host Peru).

“It’s an exciting moment to join U.S. Soccer,” Wicky said. “As a coach, it excites me to be a part of the process and working to help players grow. I’ve been following U.S. Soccer for more than 10 years now, and with the growth of the sport in the United States, I’m really excited to come in and help develop the program.”

Wicky, 41, is no stranger to the United States. He is married to an American, and also finished his playing career with one season with defunct MLS club Chivas USA in 2008. He most recently served as manager of Swiss club FC Basel for the 2017-2018 season, guiding them through the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League a year ago, though they fell to Manchester City in the round of 16.

Wicky has extensive coaching experience in the youth ranks, having led the FC Basel U-18 team to the 2015 Swiss Cup, and the FC Basel U-19 team to a UEFA Youth League Round of 16 finish before coaching Basel’s U-21 team to a first-place finish in the Swiss third division.

Wicky takes over a talented U.S. U-17 group that features Giovanni Reyna, who is currently training with Borussia Dortmund, Sporting Kansas City forward Gianluca Busio and Atlanta United defender George Bello.

Though he hasn’t worked with the U.S. youth national team setup before, Wicky is no stranger to the team he is inheriting, a factor in U.S. Soccer’s decision to hire him.

“He impressed us with his knowledge of the player pool and his commitment to contribute to the overall Youth National Teams program to develop our next generation of National Team players,” Nico Romeijn, U.S. Soccer Chief Sport Development Officer said of Wicky, who will move to Chicago as part of U.S. Soccer’s new initiative to have all of its national team head coaches based in Chicago, where U.S. Soccer’s headquarters are located.

U.S. Soccer still has other youth national team coaching vacancies to fill, most notably the U.S. Under-23 national team head coaching position. It is believed that the delay in filling those vacancies has been due, at least in part, to candidates being reluctant to move to Chicago.

Balotelli at Marseille due to Drogba pep talk

The enigmatic Italian striker traded clubs in Ligue 1 when leaving Nice in January, but not before discussing his options with a legendary frontman

Didier Drogba has revealed that he helped to talk Mario Balotelli into making a move to Marseille.

The enigmatic Italian striker made a switch to Stade Velodrome during the January transfer window.

He traded Ligue 1 clubs after finding himself questioned and struggling for regular minutes at Nice.

Patrick Vieira was not convinced of the 28-year-old’s attitude and allowed him to head for the exits.

Nice’s loss has been Marseille’s gain, with Balotelli opening a new chapter in his colourful career with five goals in seven appearances.

He appears to have rediscovered his spark, with legendary former Chelsea frontman Drogba playing a part in that renaissance.

A man who burst onto the scene at Marseille during his own career told Ligue 1’s official website: “I am very happy for Balotelli, especially because we talked about it for a while before he went there.

“I told him: ‘You have this opportunity, so take it, because it’s a club that will be good for you.’ And now Mario is really doing well. He’s started scoring again and I am happy.”

Balotelli’s efforts at Marseille have not been enough to earn him an international recall, with Roberto Mancini overlooking him for the latest Italy squad.

One man who does continue to be recognised by his country while starring in French football is Lille striker Nicolas Pepe.

Drogba is delighted to see a fellow Ivorian showing his worth, with a highly-rated 23-year-old generating talk of interest from the likes of Arsenal.

“He has very good statistics and will easily exceed my record of goals in a Ligue 1 season [19 in 2003-04],” added Drogba.

“He is a fast, complete, very efficient player. We need players like him in Ligue 1.

“I had already been aware of him for some time, especially because he has been summoned to Ivorian selection for several years. This season he is performing at a very high level.”

Pepe has recorded 17 goals in 30 appearances this season to register on the transfer radar of leading sides across Europe.

'We have to shut the door' – Arsenal working to ease burden on Aubameyang, says Chambers

The Gunners striker has scored his side’s last four Premier League goals and has scored the winner in each of their three victories this season

Calum Chambers admits Arsenal cannot keep relying on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to bail them out every week.

The Gunners striker came up trumps again on Sunday, scoring the late winner as Unai Emery’s side came from behind to beat Aston Villa 3-2 at the Emirates.

Aubameyang is averaging a goal a game this season and has scored the winner in each of Arsenal’s three league victories since the start of the campaign.

The Gabon international also scored the second-half equaliser in the draw against Tottenham and netted both goals when the Gunners threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Watford.

So it’s been a superb start to the season for the frontman, but Chambers accepts that others need to step up, especially in defence where Emery’s side have conceded 10 times in their first six games, with only Chelsea, Wolves, Norwich and Watford letting in more.

“Of course,” said the defender, when asked if Arsenal need to stop relying on Aubameyang to dig them out of a hole. “But when you have players like that obviously it does help as well.

“We know as a team, and we know as a defensive unit, that we have to be solid, that we have to shut the door and be stronger.

“We’re working every day in training and working on what we need to do and we’ll just keep going.”

Chambers came on at half-time during Sunday’s win against Villa to fill the void left by Ainsley Maitland-Niles after the right-back had been sent off five minutes before the interval.

And the former Southampton man made a big impact, scoring his first Arsenal goal in three years to make it 2-2 nine minutes from full-time. Aubameyang netted the winner just three minutes later.

“It was a bit of a rollercoaster of emotions for me,” said Chambers. “I felt like I needed to do something after their second goal.

“I said it came from me, my touch was poor, so I felt like I had to get my head right and bring the team back into it. Luckily I did that.

“To get a goal myself was quite nice. It is my first for a while and it is always nice to get it.”

Despite the victory, it was another performance from Arsenal that raised questions about where the team are right now under the guidance of Emery.

The midfield remains a major problem, with Villa again taking advantage of the wide open spaces in the middle of the pitch to run through at the back four and create shooting chances.

Emery’s decision to replace Granit Xhaka with Lucas Torreira midway through the second half was met by loud cheers from the home supporters, such were the captain’s struggles during the game.

And Chambers admits the players are aware that they are giving the opposition far too many opportunities on a weekly basis.

“We recognise that and we are working on that,” he said. “We are working every day at the training ground on our philosophy and the way we want to play.

“It was one of those where it didn’t help that we went down to 10 men. Obviously they (Villa) are going to have chances, they are going to dominate parts of the game and that happened.

“I think it was all about spirit, digging in deep and doing anything we could to get the result – and that’s what we did. I thought the whole team put in a shift and at the end of the day it was a good result.”

Sunday’s game was Chambers’ first in the Premier League since the win at Newcastle on the opening weekend of the season.

He started next to Sokratis at centre-back at St James’ Park but lost his place immediately after following the deadline-day signing of David Luiz from Chelsea.

“Obviously it was disappointing,” said the 24-year-old. “But I respect the manager and I respect his decisions.

“He spoke to me and I spoke to him. As I said, I respect his decision and I work hard in training every day to get an opportunity again and to prove myself.”

Solskjaer made to pay for leaving out Lingard – Tactical lessons from the Premier League weekend

The Norwegian coach has veered away from the tactics he used when he was caretaker boss and a maligned midfielder is the answer to the problem

Manchester United put in another lacklustre performance in their 2-0 defeat at West Ham with the Red Devils looking toothless in attack and defensively brittle at crucial moments, but were Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team selection and tactics to blame for the loss?

Elsewhere, Aston Villa collapsed against 10-man Arsenal after a negative substitution and lucky Liverpool need to improve despite knocking over Chelsea.

Goal  breaks down the major tactical lessons from the Premier League’s key fixtures…

1) Solskjaer shunning of Lingard costs Man Utd

When Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was first appointed as Manchester United’s caretaker manager, his side attacked predominantly through the central column of the pitch, using Jesse Lingard’s energy and Paul Pogba’s forward movement to get close support to Juan Mata.

Over the summer, the Norwegian changed his tactical system, but Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at West Ham was evidence he should never have moved away from a narrow, short-passing strategy.

Mata was so isolated in attacking midfield (Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic were too safe with their passes to find him) that he constantly drifted into the channels, meaning the visitors were pushed into harmless wide areas over and over again.

PIC: Mata touches vs West Ham (first half)

In addition, West Ham’s block did not have to work hard to shunt Marcus Rashford down the flanks.

In the second half United initially improved as Daniel James and Andreas Pereira tucked infield, their small successes in overwhelming Declan Rice proof that Solskjaer’s side had begun too wide.

However, it was not long before both players relaxed back to the flanks, suggesting it was not a tactical instruction they had received at half-time.

Manuel Pellegrini later solidified the midfield by introducing Jack Wilshere – adding a sense of calm control in the centre – and United never looked like coming back into the game.

Lingard should have started the match as Solskjaer needed to get more bodies through the middle, bunched together for faster, more fluid football.

2) Nervous Smith costs Villa as Arsenal take advantage

For 70 minutes against Aston Villa it was typical Arsenal; applying no pressure to the ball and allowing opponents to counterattack straight past them.

Dean Smith’s decision to play two fast wingers, Trezeguet and Anwar El Ghazi, paid off as the visitors broke consistently into the spaces behind Arsenal’s full-backs, who were sitting too high up the pitch.

But then Villa collapsed.

A nervous tone was set by Smith’s negative substitution just seven minutes after Villa took the lead for the second time, with Ahmed Elmohamady replacing Trezeguet.

The change appeared to infect the Villa players with their manager’s anxiety and they immediately dropped deep to absorb pressure from the 10 men of Arsenal. It was Villa’s negativity during this period of the match that led directly to the equaliser.

The mix-up between Tyrone Mings and Neil Taylor for Calum Chambers’ equaliser was the result of an overly-crowded penalty area, coming from a second-wave attack during which Villa failed to move their back-line up the pitch.

From there, the Arsenal winner was inevitable. In a carbon copy of Villa’s first game of the season at Tottenham, nervous and conservative management from Smith cost his side valuable points.

3) Lucky Liverpool must find midfield solutions as pressure mounts

Liverpool did not so much grind out a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge as ride their luck.

This was the first time in 2019-20 that the Reds had to sit back and absorb pressure, holding just 28 per cent possession for the final 25 minutes, and it did not inspire confidence.

Chelsea had two golden opportunities late in the game – a Michy Batshuayi header and Mason Mount left-footed shot – that should have earned them a point, and in both instances Liverpool were too vulnerable on their right.

Jurgen Klopp’s 4-3-3 generally leaves big patches of grass either side of the midfield three, particularly later in games when the central trio are too tired to move wide.

As Willian moved through the gears, switching the play with long diagonals, Trent Alexander-Arnold was repeatedly left exposed. There is little chance that Mohamed Salah will ever dig in and track back, which is why in the future Klopp must react quicker to the unfolding situation.

His 91st minute change, moving to a back three that allowed Alexander-Arnold to step out, worked well and could be relied upon in future.

But if Klopp does not want to unsettle the defence, then he at least needs to move from 4-3-3- to 4-4-2.

When James Milner came on for Sadio Mane, Klopp moved Georginio Wijnaldum into the attack; it would have made more sense to keep the Netherlands international in midfield and move to a more conservative system.

4) Watford’s lack of belief brutally exposed by City

Even before a ball had been kicked Watford’s team selection against Manchester City indicated a lack of self-belief.

Quique Sanchez Flores began without a centre-forward, preparing for an onslaught that duly began within seconds of the kick-off.

Clearly scarred by the 6-0 defeat in the FA Cup final, the tactical issue on Saturday was being far, far too defensive.

Kevin De Bruyne has consistently moved out to the inside-right channel this season in order to swing crosses into the box, and so it should not have caught Watford by surprise when he did so inside the first minute.

They certainly should have closed him down, but Will Hughes was so terrified of the Man City players that he went into a back five alongside his right-back, marking no-one and leaving De Bruyne free to cross for David Silva.

For the next 14 minutes Watford barely attempted a tackle, backing off repeatedly and simply watching as the hosts tore them apart.

There is no point approaching Man City with relentlessly negative tactics. It will only trigger a psychological dip that ensures total destruction.

5) Wilder shows he is willing – and able – to adapt

Sheffield United are a ball-playing side who, in a 3-5-2, look to switch positions with one another to create a fluid formation that prioritises pulling opponents out of shape.

But at Everton they were a completely different side, holding just 30% of the ball by sitting deep and frustrating their hosts. The Blades had just two shots on goal and scored from both.

In direct contrast to Villa, Sheffield United are learning that the Premier League presents them with an entirely different dynamic than the top end of the Championship, and while Wilder continues to play his way at Bramall Lane, he has coached a dramatically different approach for away games.

Everton should have converted some of their chances and, once again, they lacked a clear identity in the 90 minutes, but credit to United for sticking to a game-plan that must be tedious and counter-intuitive to Wilder’s players.

Five points clear but Liverpool won’t look at the table until it gets ‘interesting’, says Robertson

The Reds remain faultless in 2019-20 but their Scottish full-back, along with Virgil van Dijk, says nobody is looking at the standings just yet

Liverpool may be five points clear at the top of the Premier League, but Andy Robertson says the Reds will not start looking at the table until it gets “interesting”.

Jurgen Klopp’s side remain faultless through six games of the 2019-20 campaign.

Maximum points have extended their run of successive wins in the English top-flight to 15, with momentum established last season having been maintained.

Many are already suggesting that Liverpool could surge to a first title triumph in 30 years, but nobody at Anfield is getting caught up in such hype just yet.

For them, with 32 games still to be taken in, they have merely got off to a good start.

Scottish full-back Robertson told Sky Sports after a 2-1 victory away at Chelsea which has kept the Reds in front of reigning champions Manchester City: “We’re not looking at the table just yet, there is still a long, long way to go.

“Don’t get me wrong, it’s lovely to be five points clear but there are going to be twists and turns this season, as there were last season.

“We’ve got off to a good start but it’s about keeping that going and keeping the momentum.

“If we keep winning our games, that’s all that matters. But we won’t look at the table until it gets interesting.”

Those thoughts have been echoed by Dutch centre-half Virgil van Dijk.

He is aware that there are still a lot of points to play for and that it would be foolish to start thinking about what could happen when the campaign is yet to reach the end of September.

The commanding defender added: “We’re not looking at the others at the moment. The season is still so long.

“For us it’s just about trying to keep winning games, trying to get results and improve our game.

“It’s tough to come here [Stamford Bridge] and get a result and I’m very pleased that we did it.”

Liverpool were left hanging on towards the end of a trip to west London, with N’Golo Kante having snatched a lifeline for Chelsea.

Ultimately, though, first-half goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino proved to be enough for the Reds as they passed another stern test of their title credentials.

'We never won anything' – Icardi says he left Inter for PSG to win trophies

The Argentinian forward discussed his move to the French giants, saying he believes it is time to compete at the highest level

Mauro Icardi said he left Inter for Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain to win titles as he believes he has reached a point in his career where he needs to win trophies.

Icardi moved to PSG on an initial season-long loan, with the French giants reportedly holding the option to buy the striker for  €65 million (£59m/$71m).

The 26-year-old, who arrived at Inter from Sampdoria in 2013, scored 111 Serie A goals and 124 goals in all competitions to be eighth on the Nerazzurri’s all-time list.

Icardi – stripped of the Inter captaincy last season and frozen out by head coach Antonio Conte after the former Chelsea boss took over as manager– said the time was right to leave San Siro.

“I came here to play,” Icardi told Canal+. “If you arrive with an option to buy, you know the player has to give his best to ensure the club decides to purchase him outright. We’ll see what happens next summer.

“I was in my seventh year at Inter and my dream was to play in the Champions League with Inter, which I did last season, but we never won anything.

“I thought the time had come for me to go to a winning club, one that could challenge for and win titles. It’s time for me to start winning.

“The truth is that PSG is a squad full of champions and that is what I wanted.”

Icardi made his debut in PSG’s 1-0 win over Strasbourg on September 14 before starting in last week’s memorable 3-0 Champions League victory against Real Madrid, which featured two goals from Angel di Maria and a late finish from Thomas Meunier.

However, the Argentina international missed Sunday’s late triumph at Ligue 1 rivals Lyon.

Next up for PSG is a visit from Stade Reims on Wednesday, and Icardi is looking to play his part for the club as the season continues.

“People call me a ‘killer’ in the penalty area. I am always ready in the box to score goals,” Icardi added. “Ever since my debut when very young for Rosario, my objective and obsession has always been to score goals.”
