'Sancho has a lot to learn' – Borussia Dortmund manager Favre critical of star winger

The club’s manager insists the England international is far from the finished product despite the vast amount of praise coming his way

Jadon Sancho has “a lot to learn” according to Borussia Dortmund manager Lucien Favre, who called for the 18-year-old to focus on his work rate to fulfil his potential.

Sancho has scored eight Bundesliga goals in 24 appearances for Favre’s table-topping side this season but was on the receiving end of criticism aimed at the whole team after Dortmund were beaten 2-1 at Augsburg on Friday.

Former defender Matthias Sammer described Dortmund as “immature” following the result, and Favre admitted while Sancho has delivered outstanding performances this season, he still lacks a measure of consistency.

“He’s a very good player, a very talented player,” Favre told reporters ahead of Dortmund’s Champions League last-16 second-leg clash with Tottenham.

“He’s 18 and sometimes with 18 it’s up and down.

“He had played really, really well in the first half of the season and at the start of second half but he has highs and lows.

“He has a lot to learn, a lot of potential. But for every player who has talent there is no talent without hard work.

“Hard work is 90 per cent. Talent is 10 percent.”

Dortmund go into their clash with Tottenham trailing 3-0 after a defeat at Wembley, and no side has ever won a Champions League knockout tie after losing the first leg away from home by that scoreline.

The last time the German club managed to advance to the last eight of the competition was back in 2017 where they were eventually eliminated by by Monaco.

Favre played down the impact of Sammer’s comments about his side, who are only ahead of second-placed Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga table on goal difference.

“I have often spoken to Matthias at the beginning of the season and since,” said Favre. “We have a good understanding. But he is a journalist in those situations and we are a democracy. Everyone can have his opinion.

“I have every trust in him. On TV he has a right to say what he can say. It’s not a problem for me. But I did not see the show. So I can’t really judge this.”

Guardiola casts doubt over Gundogan future at Man City

The midfielder says he could wait until next season to extend his deal but his manager has suggested he has not “100 per cent” decided on his future

Pep Guardiola has cast doubt over Ilkay Gundogan’s future at Manchester City, suggesting that a new contract would have been done by now had the midfielder been “100 per cent” sure about his future.

Gundogan’s current contract expires at the end of next season and City have already attempted to reach a new agreement.

The Germany international, 28, has admitted that he could wait until next season to find an agreement, saying in February: “It’s possible that I will go to the last year of my contract and then extend.

“Maybe the next one will be my last big contract, so such a decision must be well considered.”

The former Borussia Dortmund man has also said he feels under no pressure to sign a new deal, but Guardiola has now made it clear that the Premier League champions want him to stay and would have liked him to have signed on already.

“In the first season he couldn’t play because of a tough injury, six or seven months out, but always when he was able to play a lot of games he is an incredibly important player,” Guardiola told reporters.

“He knows what we want, he knows what we think about him but it’s the same as other cases like we said in the past. At the end the last decision is not in our hands.

“We try to speak with him, we want him to extend the contract right now. Yesterday would have been better than today, and today better than tomorrow. But if he doesn’t want to, we cannot do anything else.”

Guardiola was then asked if he knows what Gundogan wants, to which he responded: “If he was 100 per cent then the deal would have been done. We are still in negotiations.”

In the past months Gundogan has been linked with moves to Barcelona, Inter or a return to the Bundesliga, but City are still hopeful that he will put pen to paper on a new deal.

Rooney salutes Solskjaer's impact at Man Utd and the standard of MLS

The Red Devils’ all-time leading scorer is pleased to see smiles back on faces at Old Trafford and admits to being pleasantly surprised by US football

Wayne Rooney has saluted Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for putting “smiles back on the players’ faces” at Manchester United and admitted to being pleasantly surprised by the standard of Major League Soccer.

A modern-day icon, who is the all-time leading goalscorer for both the Red Devils and England, departed Old Trafford in the summer of 2017.

He left with many happy memories, but had seen United hit the skids in the wake of Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

Jose Mourinho briefly lifted the mood as he landed three trophies in his debut campaign, but was unceremoniously dumped from his post in December after stumbling out of the blocks in 2018-19.

A former favourite was asked to salvage a faltering season, and Treble-winning hero Solskjaer has delivered by collecting 12 wins from 15 games to raise morale and lift United up the Premier League table.

Plaudits have rained down on the Norwegian, with Rooney telling CNN when asked for his assessment: “He’s just brought smiles back to the players’ faces, and brought enjoyment back to the players, but also to the staff who work behind the scenes.

“Ole Gunnar’s a fantastic person, if you play with him… I pass advice on, which Ole Gunnar gave to me, which I pass on to some of the younger players now.

“I remember when I was a young lad, I was on the bench, and I was sat next to Ole Gunnar, and he said to me, ‘just keep watching the strikers and the defenders and watch them, watch their movements, and keep visualising what runs you can make when you come on’.”

Rooney is no longer around to aid the collective cause at United, but he still believes that he could do a job in the Premier League at 33 years of age.

He said: “If I’m being honest, I know quality wise, I can still play in the Premier League, I know that. I’ve always been a confident person, and so I have high expectations of myself… I never doubted myself at all.”

English football is now part of Rooney’s past, with his present very much MLS.

He impressed during his debut campaign with D.C. United, helping them to book a play-off spot, and admits to having found a fresh start more challenging than he initially imagined.

“I knew that it’s a very competitive league,” Rooney said.

“I was probably a bit surprised, if I’m being honest, to the amount of quality which is in the league … I didn’t realise how much quality there was in the league player-wise. So, yeah, I think the league is at a very high standard.”

Global firms to embrace new era of manufacturing

Global manufacturers, gathering in Anhui for a world manufacturing convention, showcased their determination to embrace a new era of manufacturing by promising to invest 735.1 billion yuan ($105 billion) in 638 projects in the province when the gala ended on Monday.

These include a 220-billion-yuan investment to set up Changxin IC Industrial Base in Hefei, and a 10-billion-yuan input to boost Lenovo Group’s smart products at its subsidiary of LCFC (Hefei) Electronics, Anhui Executive Vice-Governor Deng Xiangyang said on Tuesday.

Reinforcing the importance of the manufacturing sector, participants at the WMC 2019 exhibited their cutting-edge technologies and high-tech advances, showing that manufacturing can shine bright in the industrial landscape, he said.

During the four-day event, over 4,500 participants from 78 countries and regions also toured a themed high-tech exhibition in Hefei, the provincial capital, where delegates from more than 800 enterprises from home and abroad showcased some 2,000 cutting-edge products.

Shown in 10 exhibition areas, the products covered such spheres as world manufacturing, intelligent manufacturing, digital economy, commodity trading and autonomous vehicles, drawing some 350,000 visitors.

President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter on Friday to the WMC 2019, when the event opened, stressing the importance of the manufacturing sector and calling for greater global cooperation to jointly seize the opportunities arising from China’s new round of scientific and industrial advances.

Also last week, during his three-day inspection tour in Zhengzhou, Central China’s Henan province, Xi reiterated the importance of developing the real economy by bolstering manufacturing to enhance high-quality economic growth.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the added value of China’s manufacturing industry surpassed that of the United States for the first time in 2010, becoming the world’s largest manufacturing nation.

The added-value of China’s manufacturing, topping the whole world for nine years, exceeding 26 trillion yuan in 2018, accounting for 26 percent of the corresponding global figure, State Councilor Wang Yong said at the opening ceremony of WMC 2019.

President Xi has stressed many times that the manufacturing sector is the base of a nation’s development and innovation-driven development is the core of manufacturing development, Wang said.

The president’s letter has provided a “new orientation” and can serve as a navigator in boosting Anhui’s high-quality development of the manufacturing industry, said Yu Aihua, a member of the Standing Committee of Anhui Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China and the province’s publicity chief, on Tuesday.

Last year, when the first WMC opened in Hefei, a total of 436 projects with investments of 447.1 billion yuan were signed when the event concluded, and over 92 percent of them had finished business registration by the end of July, according to Zhang Jian, head of Anhui provincial bureau of commerce.

Stressing that Anhui is rather strong in basic research and focusing on major scientific and technological innovations, Anhui Party secretary Li Jinbin said the province has maintained a global leading position in its achievements in quantum communication, steady-state high magnetic fields, fusion energy and brain-like intelligence.

The East Chinese province will adhere to President Xi’s call to bolster manufacturing to enhance high-quality economic growth, Li said.

Anhui Governor Li Guoying noted that the central authorities have urged the province to further consolidate its foundation for manufacturing and extend its industrial chain.

The province will rely on technological innovation to promote industrial innovation, with priorities on strengthening key technologies in such fields as smart home appliances, electronic information, new energy vehicles, industrial robots and artificial intelligence, the governor said.

House to launch impeachment inquiry of Trump

Democrats finally made their move against US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, as Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that the House of Representatives will open an impeachment inquiry over a phone call Trump had with Ukraine’s president about Joe Biden and his son.

“The actions taken to date by the president have seriously violated the Constitution,” Pelosi said after meeting with House Democrats in the basement of the Capitol. “The president must be held accountable. No one is above the law.”

The phone conversation was reported to be part of a whistle-blower complaint that the Trump administration has not turned over to Congress.

The probe will center on whether Trump sought help from a foreign government in his bid for reelection next year. Former vice-president Joe Biden is a top contender for the Democratic presidential nomination.

While Trump admits he discussed Biden with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in a July phone call, he has focused instead on raising charges that Biden improperly tried to halt a Ukrainian probe of Burisma Holdings, a natural gas company. Biden’s son, Hunter, served on the board of directors from 2014 to 2019.

Trump, who was meeting with world leaders at the United Nations, called the impending inquiry a “witch hunt” and predicted it would be a “positive for me”.

Bale left out of Real Madrid squad for Osasuna clash

The Wales international has been in impressive form for Los Blancos this season but mystery shrouds his absence for Wednesday’s match

Gareth Bale has been left out of Real Madrid’s squad for their clash with Osasuna in La Liga on Wednesday.

Zinedine Zidane’s side are looking to build on their victory over Sevilla on Sunday, with a win over their newly-promoted opposition potentially enough to take them to the top of the table depending on other results.

They will have to do without Bale, however, who has made a strong start to the season following a summer of uncertainty regarding his future.

Blancos president Florentino Perez pulled the plug on the Wales international’s proposed move to Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning as Zidane looked to move the forward on.

The reaction of Bale, however, has been impressive, with the former Tottenham star contributing two goals and an assist in his four Liga matches in 2019-20.

Zidane even went so far as to hail Bale’s impact in his pre-match press conference for the Osasuna clash on Tuesday, labelling the 30-year-old a “great player”.

“Bale’s really focused, same as the rest,” he said. “He wants to do great, he’s in a good moment. He’s an important player and he knows he’s a great player.

“He helps when we attack and when we defend, as he did in the last game. When everyone is committed, we can do great things.”

But Bale will be forced to watch on from the sidelines, with mystery surrounding the exact reasons for his absence.

Madrid have not released a statement to suggest that it is fitness related, with the most logical explanation being that the forward is being rested ahead of Saturday’s derby clash with Atletico Madrid.

If that proves to be the case then he is the only senior member of Zidane’s squad to be afforded the evening off, with the only other absentees having already been confirmed as injured.

Left-back duo Marcelo and Ferland Mendy are both on the path to recovery along with midfielders Luka Modric and Isco.

Marco Asensio and Brahim Diaz have more long-term fitness issues, though there are places in the squad for Rodrygo and Fede Valverde following recent injuries of their own.

Real Madrid squad vs Osasuna: Courtois, Areola, Altube; Carvajal, Odriozola, Ramos, Varane, Nacho, Militao; Kroos, Casemiro, Valverde, James Rodriguez; Hazard, Lucas Vazquez, Vinicius, Rodrygo, Benzema, Jovic.

Elliott in line for Liverpool debut as Klopp picks youthful squad for MK Dons clash

The Reds could hand senior bows to as many as eight players in their Carabao Cup third-round clash on Wednesday

Liverpool could hand debuts to as many as eight players in Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup clash with MK Dons, Goal can reveal.

The Reds have selected a youthful squad for the third-round tie away at the League One outfit, with a host of youngsters in line to feature in the game.

Harvey Elliott, the 16-year-old signed from Fulham in the summer, is one such player. The teenager, who made his professional debut for the Cottagers in the League Cup 12 months ago, is set for a first senior Reds appearance having began the season with Neil Critchley’s Under-23 side. He would become the second-youngest player in Liverpool’s history were he to feature.

Elliott is joined in the squad by fellow new-boy Sepp van den Berg, while 18-year-old midfielders Luis Longstaff and Leighton Clarkson have also travelled. Longstaff scored for the U-23s against Leicester City last weekend, while Clarkson has impressed staff in training at Melwood while making a solid start to the campaign with Barry Lewtas’ U-18 side.

Also in the squad are local duo Curtis Jones and Adam Lewis, Dutch defender Ki-Jana Hoever as well as the highly-rated Rhian Brewster, who will make his long-awaited first-team bow in attack, almost two-and-a-half years after his first call-up to the senior squad.

Midfielders Herbie Kane and Pedro Chirivella could also feature, while Ireland U-21 international Caoimhin Kelleher will start in goal ahead of the veteran Andy Lonergan.

The squad will be bolstered by a number of senior players, with Joe Gomez, Dejan Lovren, James Milner, Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain available. Naby Keita is back from injury and set to start, though Xherdan Shaqiri has been ruled out with a calf problem.

Shaqiri joins Divock Origi (ankle) on the sidelines, while Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Roberto Firmino, Fabinho, Joel Matip, Gini Wijnaldum, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson and Jordan Henderson have all been rested entirely for the trip, with Klopp keeping an eye on Saturday’s Premier League trip to Sheffield United.

The Liverpool manager left the pre-match media duties to Pep Lijnders, his assistant, on Tuesday afternoon.

The Reds have exited the League Cup at the third-round stage in each of the last two seasons, but Lijnders told his press conference that “a Premier League team” would be selected at Stadium MK, and claimed that Liverpool would take the competition seriously. “Cup competitions,” he said, “are the soul of football”.

Also on Wednesday, an U-21 side will take on Fleetwood in the EFL Trophy. Layton Stewart, the 16-year-old striker who has impressed for the U-18s this season, is expected to feature in that game.

Bellerin in doubt to start for Arsenal against Manchester United

A first Premier League appearance of the season does not look to be on the cards for the Spanish defender, despite his injury comeback

Arsenal boss Unai Emery does not believe Hector Bellerin will be able to start for the Gunners against Manchester United in the Premier League despite his successful return to action on Tuesday.

Bellerin, sidelined since January with a knee injury, ended his prolonged absence by coming off the bench in Arsenal’s 5-0 Carabao Cup win over Nottingham Forest.

The 24-year-old Spaniard replaced debutant Kieran Tierney in the 77th minute and made an instant impact, teeing up Joe Willock for Arsenal’s third goal.

Bellerin was a key figure in the starting XI for Arsenal prior to his injury, but Emery is not anticipating the full-back being fast-tracked into the team for Monday’s trip to Old Trafford.

Asked about Bellerin at a media conference, Emery told reporters: “He wanted to play 90. He said I’m ready and wanted to play.

“I think no [he won’t be ready to start against Manchester United]. Maybe in his mind yes. We need to listen to the doctor.

“The first minutes were amazing for him…The most important for him is his attitude. He wants to help us.”

Rob Holding marked his comeback from a knee problem that kept him out for nearly 10 months with a thumping header to put Arsenal 2-0 up.

“It is perfect to have more options at centre back. His spirit, his positive minutes. Every day in training he helps us to have more performances like a team,” Emery said of Holding.

“He needed to take minutes and confidence. It was a perfect match. He was a little tired at the end, he’s happy.”

Gabriel Martinelli opened the scoring on his first start for the club and the 18-year-old rounded off a rout with a deflected stoppage-time strike.

“We were waiting and watching him [Martinelli], how he could improve with us,” Emery added. “He played very well in pre-season, he was working each training with a big spirit and performance.

“I spoke with him and told him to have some patience for his opportunity to do like he was doing. Tonight he did that. He deserved it.

“He is very humble, he fights, he’s hungry to have that opportunity to help us.”

Guardiola defends Bernardo Silva against racism allegations following controversial tweet

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich head coach believes his player’s social media post was nothing more than a joke between friends

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has defended Bernardo Silva after the FA contacted the club following a Twitter post from the midfielder.

The Portugal international’s social media post involving team-mate Benjamin Mendy was deemed offensive by many and was subsequently deleted, although the FA will investigate.

The left-back seemed to see the funny side of Silva’s joke, but the midfielder could face a ban if charged with racist abuse.

Guardiola vouched for his player’s character, insisting that no offence was meant.

“Honestly, I don’t know what will happen,” Guardiola said following Manchester City’s win over Preston.

“They should put their focus on another issue because they don’t know which guy you are talking about.

“Bernardo is one of the most lovely people I ever met in my life. He speaks four or five languages and that is the best way to understand how open-minded he is and one of his best friends is Mendy. He’s like a brother to him.

“The image is not about the colour of the skin. He took a picture of Benjamin when he was young and he related it to this cartoon, which was quite similar for the image.

Click Here: Fjallraven Kanken Art Spring Landscape Backpacks

“If they want to do that [investigate] and ask for Bernardo, I think he will be open to talk. But first you have to know exactly which person you are talking about.

“There are many situations with people, with white people and you look at a cartoon and the face is quite similar as your face and you put it in there, it is quite similar.

“I think the response from Mendy was clear after that. They are joking all the time. Maybe what I say as advice is to hide social media, if something happened it would be a mistake.

“Bernardo is an exceptional person. A guy who can speak five languages, it’s because he’s open-minded – nothing about the colour of the skin, nationalities or whatever.”

Manchester City trail league leaders Liverpool by five points as they seek to retain their Premier League crown for a third successive season and losing Silva would prove a blow to their hopes of closing the gap after his hat-trick in the 8-0 demolition of Watford.

City beat Championship side Preston North End 3-0 to progress to the next round of the Carabao Cup – another competition in which they are reigning champions – and now turn their attention to the league clash with Everton.

Xiaomi shows how future 5G smartphones look like with MIX Alpha

Xiaomi Corp unveiled its latest concept phone, the Mi MIX Alpha, on Tuesday, as the Chinese smartphone vendor tries to show the world how future 5G phones will look.

At the same launch event, the Beijing-based company also unveiled a 5G handset model, the Mi 9 Pro 5G, with a starting price of 3,699 yuan ($520.6), the most affordable 5G handset in the country so far.

Lei Jun, founder and CEO of Xiaomi, said MIX Alpha, priced from 19,999 yuan, is the company’s latest pioneering effort to push forward technological boundaries and show what future 5G smartphones will look like.

The Mi MIX Alpha showcases an innovative Surround Screen with a screen-to-body ratio of more than 180.6 percent. That is to say, when Mi MIX Alpha lights up – the front, side, and back of the phone are almost entirely on display.

Xiaomi said in a statement that behind the Surround Display is a series of groundbreaking technologies that required a new method of device assembly. Unlike traditional smartphone assembly methods, Mi MIX Alpha’s internal assembly is first carried out, while its display layer, touch panel, and protection layers are laminated one-by-one.

All display component layers are compiled in that order to achieve high curvature Surround Display design, so internal stress caused by bending the display layers can be released layer by layer. To achieve a smooth and flat surface, Mi MIX Alpha also uses a durable protective layer that optimizes the screen stack structure, the company added.
