Approval of 139 new drugs eases access to affordable medication

China has created and approved 139 new drugs to treat difficult illnesses such as tumors, HIV and diabetes since 2008, giving more patients greater access to affordable and effective medication, officials said on Wednesday.

Of the certified new drugs, 44 are Class 1 new drugs – innovative medicine containing new chemical substances with clinical value that have never been marketed before.

Some prominent examples include Albuvirtide, China’s first and the world’s second HIV inhibitor that entered the Chinese market last year, and Carrimycin, the world’s first antibiotic created using synthetic biology that can be used in clinical treatments.

The drugs were developed under a project carried out by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Health Commission and approved by the State Council, China’s Cabinet, in 2008.

Liu Dengfeng, the deputy director of the project’s administration and managerial office, said it has yielded reliable and affordable new drugs for patients suffering from major health threats, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, hepatitis and diabetes.

The project has also helped establish a preliminary ecosystem for pharmaceutical innovation that facilitated the commercialization of scientific and technological output from research institutes, universities and companies via policy support.

This has significantly improved China’s capability in producing original, groundbreaking pharmaceutical research, especially in major diseases and pediatric medications, he said.

Liu said the next step is to push for these new drugs to be covered by medical insurance, making them even more accessible to the public.

“Pharmaceuticals are a special commodity. Creating a new drug often requires at least a decade of research and $1 billion in investment, not to mention all the other hidden costs,” he said.

“We have to strike a balance between setting an appropriate drug price that is accessible, but also make sure researchers and companies get compensated for their hard work,” he added. “This will require further policy support and the building of a healthy innovative ecosystem for the pharmaceutical industry.”

In 2018, the annual operating income of China’s drug industry reached 2.58 trillion yuan ($375 billion), a year-on-year increase of 12.7 percent. It also made a profit of 336 billion yuan, a 10.9 percent year-on-year increase.

By the end of 2018, more than 280 Chinese generic drugs had obtained registration in the United States and Europe, with 29 drugs supported by the project entering US and European markets.

Chen Kaixian, the deputy chief technical engineer of the project, said some new drugs, like those that treat lung, breast and colorectal cancers, have helped fill a niche in China’s clinical treatment.

Lung cancer is the most common malignant tumor for Chinese citizens, Chen said. As a result, Anlotinib Hydrochloride, a new drug to treat lung cancer, has become very popular, and more than 2.6 billion yuan worth of the drug has been sold since it entered the market last year.

While China’s innovative biomedicine research is close to world-class status, the nation’s overall pharmaceutical research is currently third tier in the world, Chen said. But it is moving rapidly into second tier, on par with Japan and western European countries, though still significantly behind the US.

Basic research, such as those related to finding biological targets that can be stimulated via drugs to treat diseases, is still lacking in China, Chen said. China could also use more research institutions capable of studying and producing innovative drugs.

Documentary: The fighting spirit of the Jiaolong Commandos

Here we have a chance to explore the daily lives of the Jiaolong Commando Unit, or Dragon Commandos.

As one of the most mysterious special forces of the People’s Liberation Army’s navy marine corps, the unit was the major force behind the evacuation of Chinese nationals from war-ravaged Yemen in 2015.

The Jiaolong Commando unit has capabilities in air, on land, at sea and underwater, and it can also launch sea-based anti-terrorism operations.

From recruitment, commandos face life-and-death tests of blood and fire, suffering and fatigue, and danger and hardship.

They have to undergo a series of rigorous tests. Only after one year of super-intensive training with a success rate of less than 50 percent can a trainee grow into an elite special operations soldier.

To be ready for battle at any time, day or night, every Jiaolong commando has undergone thousands of exercises.

Each tactical exercise challenges the limits and will of the participants. They may have to train a movement hundreds or even thousands of times in hot climates and sandy environments until these movements are committed to muscle memory.

Today’s Jiaolong Commandos have produced a number of Jiaolong generals, carrying a tradition of courage and the “Jiaolong spirit” into high leadership.

Rwanda closes border with Congo over Ebola

KINSHASA — A Rwandan official says his country has closed its border with Congo because of the deadly Ebola outbreak.

The state minister for foreign affairs Olivier Nduhungirehe confirmed the border closure to The Associated Press on Thursday.

The closure comes after a man died of Ebola in Congo’s major city of Goma, which is on the Rwandan border. He was the second confirmed Ebola case in Goma.

The World Health Organization, which declared this yearlong Ebola outbreak a global health emergency last month, has recommended against travel restrictions.

It also says the risk of regional spread is “very high.”

A Congolese official says a person who had contact with the second confirmed Ebola case in the city of Goma is at an Ebola treatment center after showing signs of the disease.

If this suspected case is confirmed, it could be the first transmission of Ebola in this yearlong outbreak inside Goma, a city of more than 2 million people on the Rwandan border.

Witnesses say border crossings with Rwanda near the city now appear to be closed.

Pepe done, Tierney next? Arsenal boss Emery aiming to sign another player before transfer window ends

With the Lille winger’s arrival set to be announced in the coming days, the Gunners boss has revealed he is still hopeful of further incomings

Unai Emery says Arsenal are still aiming to sign another player once the Nicolas Pepe deal is wrapped up, fuelling talk of a renewed move for Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney.

The club-record £72 million deal ($87m) transfer for Lille winger Pepe is set to be announced in the coming days , while footage leaked online showing him posing for photos in his Arsenal kit.

And as revealed by Goal ,  the north Londoners are still hoping to land 22-year-old Tierney before the transfer window closes, with Emery having now admitted he is attempting to bring in more reinforcements.

“We are speaking about a lot of players,” he said.

“We want to select players who can really help us, give us big performances and improve our squad.

“We are working on the possibilities to sign players. We signed [Dani] Ceballos, and we have a possibility with Pepe. We are looking for the possibility to improve, but only if we can take more steps in the squad.

“Our target is to sign another player if he can really, really improve us. Our target is continuing to sign another player if we can.”

Arsenal have been tracking Tierney throughout the summer transfer window, with the Scotland international widely regarded as one of the best young full-backs in the world.

He has inevitably drawn comparisons with compatriot Andy Robertson at Liverpool and Gunners fans will undoubtedly be hoping that he and potential new team-mate Hector Bellerin can have a similar impact to the Scot and Trent Alexander-Arnold at Anfield.

It could well be exciting times at the Emirates, with the prospect of a front three of Pepe, Alexandre Lacazatte and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, while Real Madrid loanee Ceballos will add further flair to the attack.

There is still speculation surrounding the futures of defensive pair Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi, however, with further exits expected before the transfer window closes on August 8.

Club captain Koscielny has gone public with his desire to leave, while Germany international Mustafi has been linked with a move to Monaco.

Poland Under-21 international Krystian Bielik, meanwhile, is closing on a £10m ($12m) switch to Derby County.

Pochettino delighted with Tottenham youngsters' character in Bayern win

The Argentine watched as three of his young players stepped up to score in the penalty shoot-out victory over the Bundesliga champions

Mauricio Pochettino thinks the experience of beating Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the Audi Cup was a valuable one for the youngest members of his Tottenham squad.

Spurs lifted the pre-season trophy after a penalty shoot-out win over the Bundesliga champions following a 2-2 draw, having beaten Real Madrid 1-0 earlier in the week.

One final friendly with Inter follows before the Premier League season kicks off against Aston Villa, and Pochettino thinks his side are looking in good nick.

“It was a very positive experience,” he told the club’s website. “I am so happy with the performance and behaviour of the players.

“We are learning a lot and improving a lot every day. I am so happy and we keep going.

“When you play a team like Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, always to have this sort of experience is an amazing thing for the players – for the young players and of course for the senior players to build their fitness and be stronger every day.

“We are having a very tough pre-season but we are competing very well and if we create this habit to compete really well, of course it’s going to help us in the season to try to fight for big things.”

Pochettino has given game time to plenty of Spurs’ young guns over the course of pre-season. Jack Roles, Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga stepped up against Bayern to score the last three penalties in a 6-5 win.

He has been impressed with what he has seen so far, noting that they have shown their character as much as their talent.

“No doubt about that,” Pochettino added.

“They showed great character in Singapore and in China playing against Juventus and Manchester United and now against Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

“It’s clear that we have young players, maybe with not too much experience, but with great character and personality and that is a very important thing.”

Spurs may have to turn to their youth players after an injury to stand-in right-back Juan Foyth provided the sole disappointment against Bayern.

The Argentina international was stretchered off after twisting his ankle in the second half, after himself coming on as a substitute.

Following Kieran Trippier’s move to Atletico Madrid and an injury to Serge Aurier, Kyle Walker-Peters is currently the most senior right-back in the squad.

Lucas Moura targeting more trophies with Tottenham after Audi Cup win over Bayern Munich

The Brazil international enjoyed the pre-season win but knows nothing will rival the feeling of winning major silverware

Lucas Moura says Tottenham’s Audi Cup win over Bayern Munich will set the team up well for the season ahead – and the Brazilian has now got the taste for silverware.

Goals from Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen saw Spurs leading the Bundesliga champions 2-0 at the Allianz Arena, but efforts from Jann-Fiete Arp and Alphonso Davies brought Bayern back on level terms.

A youthful Spurs side held their nerve in the resulting penalty shoot-out to lift the pre-season trophy following Tuesday’s semi-final win over Real Madrid  and Moura hopes it isn’t the last cup he will get to hold this year.

“I am very happy for this because it was two hard days and two hard games,” he told the club’s official website.

“I am very, very happy to get my first trophy with Tottenham. It is always my objective to get trophies and to be champions, and I hope to get a lot more.

“We will work hard this season to get more trophies.

“It is very important to work hard in the pre-season. Games like this get us ready for the season because the season will be very hard.

“I think we are doing a good job and we are almost ready for the season.”

The win was marred by an injury to Argentina defender Juan Foyth, who left the pitch on a stretcher after appearing to twist his ankle.

Centre-back Foyth, who has deputised at right-back following the exit of Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid, was replaced by the 20-year-old George Marsh.

Spurs finished with a number of young players on the pitch with Jack Roles, Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga scoring the last three penalties in a 6-5 shoot-out win.

“That is very important for us,” Lucas said on the youngsters’ contributions.

“They have a lot of quality and personality. I am sure that they have a great future with the club.”

Spurs will be hopeful they don’t have to rely on the youngsters too much in the coming season, which starts with a visit from newly-promoted Aston Villa on August 10.

They are reported to be in advanced discussions with Real Betis star Giovani Lo Celso, meanwhile, and could now be forced into adding defensive reinforcements if Foyth’s injury turns out to be serious.

Liverpool signing Elliott 'truly sorry' for video with apparent mocking of Kane

The winger put a statement out on social media explaining his remorse for his apparent mocking of the Spurs star

Liverpool’s new teenage signing Harvey Elliott has apologised via social media following the publication of a video in which he appeared to mock Tottenham star Harry Kane.

The 16-year-old, who only joined the Reds from Fulham on Sunday, posted the video of himself on Snapchat some time ago impersonating Kane in a derogatory representation of the Spurs centre-forward – with the clip causing public backlash after spreading online.

Elliott used his Instagram account to condemn his behavour, insisting he was “truly sorry” for the actions which “do not represent who I am as a person”.

“I would just like to wholeheartedly apologise for any offence caused on the back of a video of me currently circulating on the internet,” Elliott said on his Instagram story .

“The video was taken whilst messing around with friends in a private environment and was not directed at any individual but I realise that my actions were both immature and senseless.

“I would like to stress that the contents of the video do not represent who I am as a person or how I’ve been brought up, and I am truly sorry.”

Elliott earned his move from the Cottagers to Anfield after a season in which he became the youngest ever Premier League player following his introduction for Fulham as a substitute against Wolves in May at the age of 16 years and 30 days.

He was rushed straight into Liverpool’s squad for Sunday’s 3-0 friendly loss against Napoli, where he showed his confidence and talent in an impressive 12 minute cameo.

HIs manager Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for the youngster’s first appearance in a Reds shirt, hailing him as a “fine footballer”.

“That’s why he is here. I could say so many positive things about the boy, we signed him, he came here, he decided for us and could have gone pretty much everywhere but he wanted to be part of Liverpool,” Klopp said.

“Now he is here so let’s work with him. He needs game time, we will see where he gets that but he is obviously a fine, fine footballer and that’s why we were really interested.”

Elliott also came on in the second half during the Reds’ 3-1 win over Lyon on Wednesday and on several occasions worked his way into quality positions against the Ligue 1 club’s defence.

The England under-17 international has been likened to Gareth Bale in both playing style and appearance, with his wonderfully-gifted left foot and top knot hairstyle.

Dybala for Lukaku? Man Utd can't believe their luck

The Argentine could be persuaded to head for Old Trafford and it is a deal in which United would be huge winners, regardless of the potential pitfalls

Connoisseurs of Italian football are still shaking their heads in disbelief at the prospect of Juventus swapping Paulo Dybala for Romelu Lukaku. For Manchester United though, it would appear to be a no-brainer.

Lukaku has become a £75 million ($91m) makeweight at Old Trafford, with his 42 goals in two seasons not proving enough to persuade Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he should be favoured over Marcus Rashford in the number-nine position.

As a result, the Belgian has become desperate for a move.

And with United unconvinced by the proposals presented by an Inter side on a tight budget, the prospect of adding a player of Dybala’s quality is understandably tempting. Discussions remain at an early stage so far, but the Reds are surely the only winner if this deal makes it over the line.

Solskjaer’s 4-2-3-1 formation needs a more convincing number 10 than Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata or Andreas Pereira – the three players to have been employed there during pre-season so far – with many of their better chances on tour being created from wide positions and most of their more laboured and ponderous play coming in the centre of the attacking third.

As such, Dybala is a ready-made addition. His ability to evade tacklers and create play from in behind the front man has made him one of the most exciting forwards in the Italian game.

That is not to say he is a guarantee of success for United though, with a million different reasons why this is a move which might not pan out as desired.

Dybala had a promising but inconsistent three-year spell with Palermo after arriving in 2012, with his propensity to go through long slumps having become a concern for some followers of the Rosanero.

After he moved to Juve in 2015 he immediately fitted in as a senior player and revelled in becoming a key man following the exits that summer of Andrea Pirlo, Carlos Tevez and Arturo Vidal. However, there still remained that same tendency for him to go off the boil for lengthy periods in a season even before the 2018 arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo bumped him out of the picture somewhat.

Having switched to a 4-3-3 to suit Ronaldo it became impossible for Juve to get the best out of Dybala since the Argentine is not really suited to either wide position. Ultimately, the new reality resulted in a lack of game time for Dybala and the player has been a more irritable presence in Turin according to some close to the club.

It has been a similar story so far at international level, with his inability to play at his best when chosen in the same XI as Lionel Messi having developed into a huge issue. He has just 24 caps to his name and has scored only twice, with his appearances in major fixtures having been restricted due to his inability to adapt. For Ronaldo at Juventus, read Messi with Argentina.

United fans will understandably be wary of the story of an Argentine attacker becoming disgruntled at being phased out of his favoured role at a continental giant and arriving at Old Trafford to much pomp and circumstance. The same thing happened in 2014 with Angel Di Maria at Real Madrid and it was only a matter of months before that saga went south.

For Dybala to be a success at United, he will need to have the right attitude. He will need to buy in to the project Solskjaer is building and the work ethic which goes with it. United have been all about the high-energy press right from the front, and the 24-year-old cannot be a passenger in that regard.

He can be the man to unlock packed defences, but United will be just as keen that he doesn’t become the player who helps opponents to get through their press and set up counter-attacks.

There must be no sulking a la Di Maria, or such as his own past few months at the Allianz Stadium, even if a move from a serial Serie A champion and regular Champions League challenger to a slumped giant playing in the Europa League is a backward step rather than a forward one.

If Dybala treats this is as a chance to prove that Juventus are wrong for being so open to the idea of him leaving, then United should be on to a clear winner. Either way, having a somewhat inconsistent talent of the level of Dybala has to be a step up on Mata, Lingard or Pereira when it comes to options in the slot behind the front man.

Swapping a dispensable big-money Lukaku who has netted once in 20 United games against top-six opposition for a potential match-winner in Dybala? United should do everything they can to get this deal done.
