The empress of Shanghai’s craft beer scene

Zhang Yindi, better known as “pi jiu ayi” or “beer auntie”, is all the evidence that one needs to prove that the craft beer scene in Shanghai is booming.

Since setting up a small craft beer supermarket called Beer Lady in 2011, Zhang has gone on to open another four outlets across the city. The second, third and fifth outlets aren’t different from the first-they are essentially no-frills supermarkets that, apart from craft beer, sell a smattering of light bites like sausages, pizzas and potato chips.

Her fourth store, however, would leave most of her ardent fans floored, because this iteration clearly shows that Beer Lady is no longer just a supermarket.

Opening in November last year, this sprawling 3,000-square-meter outlet can accommodate about 1,200 patrons and comes with a performance stage, beer fermentation tanks, rows of tanks containing live seafood, a professional kitchen and a private room filed with beer-related paraphernalia that aims to showcase beer culture to important guests.

The entire project might appear to some as overly ambitious. Given the store’s location in Baoshan, a suburb in northern Shanghai that is an hour away from the city center by subway, it seems unrealistic to rent such a massive space. Some patrons have commented that the crowds here have been thin, even on weekends.

But those who think that Zhang is drunk on her own success and has overestimated the draw of her brand might be better off reserving judgement for now, because the 57-year-old appears to have a solid game plan in mind.

This fourth outlet, she says, is not just a food and beverage establishment-plans are already underway to work with partners so that this location will be a stop in the tour itineraries of travel agencies and the preferred location for company events.

“When I first started selling craft beer, I didn’t have ambitions to expand it on such a scale. I just followed my gut instinct,” she quips.

Although Zhang has liked drinking alcoholic beverages since she was young, her love affair with craft beer only started around 2008 when she had her first sip of it. About two years later, when her grocery store business was affected by the rise of e-commerce, Zhang started toying with the idea of selling this beverage to boost sales. Serendipitously, a Belgian craft beer distributor approached Zhang and asked if she was interested in carrying his products.

“I told him to send me a crate of every type of beer he had. You should’ve seen how shocked he was,” she says.

“When he asked what I would do if I didn’t manage to finish selling these beers, I told him that I’d just drink all the leftovers. It was that simple. I didn’t really give it much thought!” she laughs.

Zhang’s stock of Belgian beers sold out within a day, bought up by hordes of thirsty foreign students from nearby universities. That was when she knew she had struck gold. Within months, Zhang revamped her grocery store into a supermarket that primarily sold craft beers.

A Journey through Yantai: Unraveling the secrets of China’s wine city

When people think of China, their minds often fill with images of historic monuments and unique cultural traditions that have become such an intrinsic part of the country’s image around the world. The Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors, kung fu…these are but a small part of a vast country that would take a lifetime to fully explore.

My brother and I have seen much of what China has to offer. We’ve walked the Great Wall, eaten Chongqing hot pot, and studied at several Chinese universities, but just when we thought we were starting to understand what this immense country was all about, we arrived in the coastal city of Yantai, East China’s Shandong province.

Now don’t get me wrong, I have been to Shandong before. My brother and I lived in Jinan for almost a year, traveled to the coastal paradise of Qingdao, and climbed the enigmatic Mount Tai. But none of this was enough to prepare us for the stunning beauty that was Yantai.

After arriving at Yantai Penglai International Airport, we immediately set off for our hotel, which would take us through miles and miles of stunning greenery dotted with quaint little red-roofed buildings, which almost made us feel as if we were touring the Italian countryside. But if this wasn’t enough to sell us on the city (which it was), then the hotel we were staying at surely would be. It was a grand structure with a luxurious interior that some might say gives the Hilton a run for its money. But the most spectacular thing about the hotel was its location, right next to a vast expanse of blue nothingness. Yes, I’m referring to the ocean. Like Qingdao, Yantai is a coastal paradise, but while Qingdao can be considered China’s city of beer, Yantai is home to something even more alluring – wine.

Now wine is certainly not something that comes to mind with China, so you can imagine our complete and utter surprise at hearing that Yantai was home to one of the world’s leading wine brands and many of the leading domestic brands, including Changyu and Great Wall. In fact, Yantai produces as much as 40 percent of the wine in China. A number like that is no joke.

Indeed, this trip was all about wine. China Daily and the city of Yantai had invited a group of expats to attend the 12th International Wine Expo, and my brother and I were lucky enough to be along for the ride. At the expo, we tried all the wine we could get our hands on: Wine from France, Spain, Hungary, and, most importantly, Yantai. We were not disappointed.

Liverpool vs Chelsea Super Cup clash to be refereed by Stephanie Frappart in historic UEFA announcement

The French official will make history when she becomes the first female to referee a major UEFA men’s game on August 14

Stephanie Frappart will become the first female official to referee a major UEFA men’s match when she takes charge of the Super Cup between Liverpool and Chelsea.

UEFA have confirmed Frappart, who refereed the FIFA Women’s World Cup final between the United States and the Netherlands in Lyon, will officiate the clash between the Champions League and Europa League winners in Istanbul on August 14.

Frappart will lead a team made up of predominantly female officials in the European season’s curtain-raiser, with Manuela Nicolosi of France and Michelle O’Neill from the Republic of Ireland appointed as her assistant referees.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin believes Frappart’s appointment represents another significant step forward for women’s football.

“I have said on many occasions that the potential for women’s football has no limits and I am delighted that Stephanie Frappart has been appointed to officiate at this year’s Super Cup along with assistant referees Manuela Nicolosi and Michelle O’Neal,” Ceferin said.

“As an organisation, we place the utmost importance on the development of women’s football in all areas. I hope the skill and devotion that Stephanie has shown throughout her career to reach this level will provide inspiration to millions of girls and women around Europe and show them there should be no barriers in order to reach one’s dream.”

Frappart previously became the first female official to take charge of a Ligue 1 match when she oversaw a fixture between Amiens and Strasbourg in April, and the 35-year-old will join the pool of referee’s for France’s top flight in 2019-20.

Nicole Petignat has refereed in a UEFA men’s competition before Frappart, though they were not major games, with the Swiss official having taken charge of three qualification games for the Europa League between 2004 and 2009.

Frappart will have the help of VAR during the Super Cup, with male compatriot Clement Turpin set to be the video official.

Manchester City 'a little bit surprised' by Klopp's transfer comments

The Liverpool manager’s opinion on City’s spending habits is “not correct,” according to the club’s chief operating officer

Manchester City have been left bemused after Jurgen Klopp claimed Liverpool do not inhabit the same transfer ‘fantasy land’ as the Premier League champions.

City’s chief operating officer, Omar Berrada, described the comments as “curious” after Klopp grouped them with Barcelona , Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain in terms of sustained squad investment.

“It looks like there are four clubs in the world who can do it constantly. Madrid, Barcelona, City and PSG. You cannot compare that,” the German said earlier this week.

Liverpool have signed two teenagers – Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott – since winning the Champions League, while City broke their club-record fee to secure midfielder Rodri from Atletico Madrid.

Pep Guardiola has suggested he would like to bring in another defender at Etihad Stadium before the August 8 deadline , but Klopp is unlikely to add any extra recruits at Anfield.

“We were a little bit surprised,” Berrada said. “Liverpool are a great sporting rival.

“I don’t know why they would make these comments. I don’t know why they would look at other clubs. It’s not frustration or anger, we just find it curious that they’d be highlighting our spending.

“We’re fine with their spending. The reality is that all the top clubs invest as they see fit.

“Saying us, PSG, Real Madrid and Barcelona always invest £200 million is not correct. We don’t look at what others do.”

Liverpool themselves spent over £100 million ($121m) on Alisson, Fabinho and Xherdan Shaqiri prior to the start of last season, which saw them finish as runners-up to City in the Premier League.

Guardiola’s side successfully defended their crown by the narrowest of margins, while also winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup to complete an unprecedented treble.

The two clubs face each other in the Community Shield on Sunday, with the 2019-20 campaign set to kick off five days later.

The curtain raiser will see Liverpool host newly-promoted Norwich at Anfield, with City set to open their season with a trip to West Ham on August 10.

Guardiola edges closer to breaking Mourinho's Premier League record

The Spanish tactician is closing in on another mark in the English game, this time from his greatest rival

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is on track to set another Premier League record, with one of Jose Mourinho’s marks in his sights.

Fresh from becoming the first manager to win the English domestic treble with the Citizens last season, Guardiola is closing in on the record for least amount of matches required to get 100 Premier League wins.

Mourinho currently holds that record from his time at Chelsea, with his first 100 wins coming in only 142 league matches in charge of the Stamford Bridge club.

But Guardiola looks set to surpass that mark as he currently has 87 wins from 114 games – meaning he only needs 13 victories in the next 27 matches to eclipse Mourinho’s mark.

Unless disaster strikes at the Etihad, Guardiola will also eclipse the games it took to reach 100 wins for Sir Alex Ferguson (162), Arsene Wenger (179), Rafa Benitez (181) and Claudio Ranieri (187).

If the Spanish tactician maintains his current win rate with City, it will only take 17 matches for him reach 100 victories, meaning he will set a new mark of 131 games to reach the century – which is 11 quicker than Mourinho.

There is one record that Guardiola cannot take off Mourinho – and that’s the most points earned in the first 100 Premier League matches – with the City boss picking up the same amount of wins as his managerial rival (73) but finishing with three less points (234) courtesy of having more draws.

Manchester City can win their first trophy of the campaign on Sunday when they take on Liverpool in the Community Shield at Wembley.

Their Premier League campaign begins with a trip to London to face West Ham before a home game against Tottenham, the team that vanquished the Sky Blues in last season’s Champions League quarter-final.

Guardiola will be bidding to become the second manager in Premier League history, after Ferguson, to win three successive league titles – a mark Guardiola achieved in La Liga with Barcelona (2008-11) and with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich (2013-16).

Ferguson achieved the Premier League title hat-trick with Manchester United twice – winning the trophy between 1998-2001 and 2006-09.

Kean's father says his son nearly joined Man Utd several years ago

The 19-year-old is on the verge of a move to Everton, but he could have joined the Red Devils in his early teens

Moise Kean’s father has said that he stopped his son from joining Manchester United several years ago.

The Juventus striker has emerged as one of his country’s top young talents, but he appears on the verge of a move to England.

Goal reported earlier this week that the 19-year-old is set to join Everton in a deal worth an initial €32 million (£29m/$35m).

But it could have been different for the Italy international, who nearly joined United in his early teens according to his father.

“I did stop his transfer at the time, his mother wanted to send him to Manchester [United],” Biorou Jean Kean told Omnisport.

“I said no because I wanted him to stay at Juventus and keep learning. He was not mature enough yet.

“To send a young boy abroad aged just 14-15 years old didn’t convince me at that time.”

Kean is now ready to make that move, having scored six Serie A goals for Juve last season despite making just 13 appearances and five starts.

The striker has represented Italy at every youth level, and has now scored two goals in three caps for the senior national team.

Kean’s father, who was born in the Ivory Coast, believes his son has what it takes to be a success in the Premier League.

“I completely trust my son, he will make a big impact in English football with his new team,” Kean said.

“He is someone who brings joy wherever he plays.

“I’m sure my son will not look bad in England. He will make our family, Italy and Ivory Coast proud.”

Man Utd may have missed out on Kean several years ago, but they do appear close to landing another Juventus striker this summer.

United have opened discussions over a move for Paulo Dybala in what could potentially be a swap deal with Juve involving Romelu Lukaku.

Pulisic hopes he's 'earned the respect' of his team-mates after first Chelsea goals

The U.S. international says scoring was a relief, but reiterated that he’s not at the club to replace Eden Hazard

Chelsea new boy Christian Pulisic has admitted he felt he needed to prove himself to his team-mates, but thinks scoring his first goals for the club in a pre-season friendly against Red Bull Salzburg may have gone some way to doing so.

Pulisic is the only new face on the playing staff at Chelsea as they deal with a transfer ban imposed by UEFA. He was signed in January from Dortmund, and the pressure of moving to the Premier League has been intensified by the departure of Eden Hazard from Stamford Bridge.

The United States international doesn’t see himself as Hazard’s replacement though, wanting to be seen as his own man.

“It was a big relief to score my first goals for Chelsea,” the 20-year-old said.

“Being a new signing and coming into the club, I felt I needed to prove myself and wanted to show the guys early on, especially my team-mates, that I can play too. Hopefully I have done that a bit and earned their respect.

“It’s what I’m out there to do. I’m in an attacking position. I want to score goals, I want to help with assists and do a lot of good things.

“I’m not trying to fill the gap left by Eden, he was an unbelievable player. I want to be my own player, to look at me like that, do the best I can for the team.”

One figure in the stands of Wednesday’s game was Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

Pulisic was introduced to the Russian by new Blues manager Frank Lampard, but he says the billionaire’s presence didn’t influence him on the pitch.

“I wasn’t thinking about the owner being there when I scored. But it’s great, he said ‘hello’ to us after and it was a good night. He said ‘welcome to the club’, just being nice.”

One player that Pulisic has already developed a relationship with is Ross Barkley.

The England international provided an inch-perfect pass to the American for his second goal and he was quick to praise the ex-Everton man.

“He’s an easy guy to play with,” he added. “I wasn’t sure that he was going to see that pass for the goal, but he picked me out from, I don’t know how far away it was.

“It was perfect. We had a good connection today.”

Dengue cases continue as disease spreads across Bangladesh

DHAKA – The situation of dengue has deteriorated in Bangladesh as the mosquito-borne viral disease spread out in most parts of the country in less than a month.

A total of 1,096 fresh cases of dengue were reported from the capital Dhaka and elsewhere in the country in the last 24 hours as of 8:00 am local time Monday, Abdur Rahim, a Health Ministry control room official told Xinhua on Tuesday.

He said the total number of confirmed cases as of Monday in the country since Jan 1 rose to 13,637, registering a record high.

The data reported by the Bangladeshi Ministry of Health gave an alert as Dhaka has seen a rapid surge of the disease.

The number of dengue patients in the first 29 days of July rose to 11,450, which reportedly had surpassed the total number of patients in any past year.

Ayesha Akhter, assistant director at the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), told Xinhua the number of dengue patients was 946 in July last year, saying some 10,148 people were infected with dengue fever in 2018 and 26 of them died.

Officials said Dhaka and its neighboring districts are more vulnerable to the risk of mosquito-borne diseases and most hospitals in Dhaka and clinics are now crammed with hundreds of new dengue patients every day.

Eight people have died of dengue so far this year, the Health Ministry official records showed.

However, local media Prothom Alo reported on Tuesday that the death toll was registered at 47, saying the disease has spread to 59 out of 64 districts.

Another local media Somoy TV reported on Tuesday that four people who had been diagnosed with dengue fever, died in hospitals in Dhaka and southern Barisal town, some 180 km south of Dhaka, in the early hours of Tuesday.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Malik earlier said in a press conference that the government has taken actions.

The minister asked all city corporations and municipalities to take necessary steps to destroy the breeding grounds of the Aedes mosquitoes.

Dengue is transmitted by several species of mosquito within the genus Aedes. The first case of mosquito-borne viral infection was reported in Bangladesh in 2000, and some 100 people died from the disease from 2000 to 2003.

Impoverished states are especially vulnerable to viruses because of insufficient biosecurity, deficient disease surveillance and protection measures.

The monsoon period from June to September is usually the peak season of dengue fever in Bangladesh and transmission becomes rampant in the country.

Chinese consumer trend shows instant purchasing habits

Chinese consumers are more inclined to immediate purchases with slightly less willingness to delay spending, according to a report on consumers’ financial literacy released on Wednesday.

Full-time students have the lowest willingness to delay spending, said the report by the Financial Consumer Protection Bureau of the People’s Bank of China.

Meanwhile, people are generally less prepared to handle unexpected expenditures, according to the report based on an investigation of 18,600 samples nationwide.

The investigation covers eleven factors including financial products’ cognition and selection, financial planning, savings and prices, bank card management and investment and finance.

Chinese consumers’ financial literacy was analyzed using comprehensive perspectives including attitude, behavior, knowledge and techniques.

Most of those investigated recognized the importance of popularizing financial knowledge and education on campus and attach greater importance to personal credit.

The top five types of financial knowledge that consumers are most interested in are bank cards, including debit and credit cards; bank financial products; housing loans; funds and stock investment; and electronic banking services, including mobile banking.

The report shows Chinese consumers’ financial behavior needs improvement, particularly in terms of family expenditure planning and implementation, understanding of bills, credit card repayment and preparation for unexpected expenditures.

The investigation also identified the need to develop more digitalized educational tools to tackle the challenges brought by digital technology and its impact on finance.

Education, income, living area, age and profession are five factors that impact Chinese consumers’ financial literacy. According the report, there have been slight improvements as the overall financial literacy index rose from 63.71 in 2017 to 64.77 in 2019.

Tackling China’s paucity of pitches

Government-subsidized construction plan hailed as crucial for growing game

Despite the massive investment in grassroots Chinese soccer in recent years, actually finding a pitch to play on can be a challenge-depending on where you live.

However, an ambitious new government construction plan is aimed at ending the nation’s pitch paucity.

The plan was detailed in a document jointly published by the National Development and Reform Commission, the General Administration of Sport of China and the Chinese Football Association on Tuesday.

Newly constructed 11-a-side pitches will be subsidized by two million yuan ($290,600) each, while five-a-side and seven-a-side pitches will be subsidized by up to one million yuan each.

The refurbishment of existing pitches is not included in the plan, which also encourages local governments to further subsidize newly built pitches through government funding, the sports lottery and other channels.

“The new plan aims at ensuring better soccer infrastructure in China. It will provide a solid foundation to organize soccer activities and provides fresh impetus for the healthy and sustainable development of Chinese soccer,” Feng Jinhu, secretary-general of the China Sports Venue Association, told National Business Daily.

“Currently, the total number of soccer pitches in our country is still not enough to meet the growing demand of people. The plan also prioritizes the building of pitches that are close to people and covers populous areas that have a high demand for quality pitches. That will greatly help residents in both rural and urban areas to embrace the sport.”

Like many soccer enthusiasts around the country, Xi’an office worker Zhu Zimu is hopeful the plan will eventually take a lot of the hassle out of playing midweek matches.

“It’s not easy to find a nearby soccer pitch, so it’s not an easy decision to make if I want to play after work each day,” he said.

“Sneaking into a campus is my quick solution for a pitch; otherwise I find it really hard to find a decent pitch for a match with my friends.”

China kicked off a wide-ranging soccer reform plan in 2015, with the ultimate aim of improving the national team’s performances and qualifying for the World Cup once again.

But while the sport is growing in popularity, China remains a minnow at international level and facilities still lag behind powerhouses such as Germany and France.

Chen Guoqiang, an associate professor at Shanghai University of Sport, has warned against ad-hoc investment in the sport and reckons the new subsidization plan needs to be carefully implemented to ensure its success.

“The new policy and the subsidization are big boosts for soccer’s growth, which is a great start, but there is much more work to be done,” said Chen.

“Different cities have different economic situations, and the conditions of the rural and urban areas are not the same. The construction of new pitches should be processed according to actual local situations.

“The construction of new pitches should consider the local soccer atmosphere, the city management capability and local people’s interest in soccer. The maintenance and the operation of the new pitches are also challenges ahead. Leveling up China’s soccer strength is not a task that can be done by one generation, and more effort should be made to achieve that goal.”
