Japan decides to revoke S. Korea’s preferential trade status

TOKYO – Japan on Friday decided to remove South Korea from a list of nations entitled to simplified export control procedures.

The Cabinet of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe approved the plans to remove South Korea from its “white list” of countries, raising the stakes in a bitter diplomatic row between the two neighbors.

The removal of South Korea from the list will take effect on Aug 28 following the necessary completion of domestic procedures, Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Hiroshige Seko said at a press conference.

Seko maintained that the move by Tokyo was not aimed at restraining trade or supposed to damage bilateral ties between both countries, although observers have noted that bilateral relations have already sunk to new lows in recent times amid an ongoing labor dispute and Japan’s previous tightening of export control regulations.

Japan has already tightened regulations early last month on its exports to South Korea of three materials vital to make memory chips and display panels, which are mainstays of the South Korean economy, in a further escalation of souring ties between both parties.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, however, told a separate press briefing on the matter that Japan will deal with South Korea the same way it treats other countries in the region.

“We don’t believe there would be any impact on global supply chains,” Japan’s top government spokesman said.

Suga previously reiterated that Japan believes that it is an appropriate step from enforcing effective export controls to remove South Korea from the white list.

Japan has a total of 27 countries on its whitelist, including the United States, Britain, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina, and whitelisted countries can, through simplified procedures, receive products exported from Japan that could be potentially be diverted for military use.

South Korea has been on the list of nations entitled to simplified export control procedures since 2004, which cover a wide range of items, except for food, timber and other goods.

In order to then export the products to countries not on the white list, the countries only need to obtain approval from Japan’s trade ministry.

The South Korean government had urged Japan not to proceed with its removal from the white list, which it estimates could have a negative bearing on more than 1,000 items in key industries spanning the auto and petrochemical sectors.

Experts close to the matter said that the measures could adversely affect both South Korean manufacturers and Japanese exporters as their supply chains are closely connected.

Japanese and South Korean foreign ministers failed to resolve differences between the two countries in a recent meeting in Bangkok, Thailand.

Les Parisiens are chasing a record seventh-successive Trophee des Champions as they seek to lay down a summer marker ahead of Ligue 1

Paris Saint-Germain will do battle with Rennes in France’s curtain-raiser for the Ligue 1 season, the Trophee des Champions, which takes place in Shenzhen.

Neymar is back training with the French champions after a summer in which he has reportedly tried to engineer a move away from the club, which is unbeaten in four summer friendlies if a penalty shootout loss to Inter is discounted.

Rennes, meanwhile, come into this match aiming to replicate the success they had over PSG in the Coupe de France final, when they claimed a 6-5 victory in a shootout after fighting back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2.

Paris Saint-Germain go chasing a record seventh successive Trophee des Champions, having lifted the season-opening silverware every year since 2013.

This particular event in Shenzhen, though, promises to be a rather low-key affair due to the volume of players unavailable having recently returned from international duty over the summer. PSG are deprived of their South American contingent, while the Africans that make up the bulk of Rennes’ star players will not be present.

PSG have been in the Far East acclimatising for over a week and have taken the opportunity to play a couple of friendly matches. First, they drew 1-1 with Inter then on Tuesday they swept past Sydney FC 3-0 thanks to goals from Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani and Metehan Guclu.

For Mbappe, such pre-season trips are more than what about what happens on the field.

“Living together is important,” he told the club’s official website. “We’re all team-mates and we’re going to spend a long season together. It’s one of the targets to integrate the new players so they can feel at home and give the best of themselves for the team. It’s beneficial to everyone.

“It’s very important but I don’t think there’s been a problem with the new players. The whole squad appreciates them. It’s a good start.”

Abdou Diallo, Pablo Sarabia and Ander Herrera are all in line to feature for PSG in a competitive environment for the first time at the weekend against opponents who denied their side the Coupe de France trophy in April.

For Rennes, who have just travelled to China for this match, it is an unusual experience, both in terms of the stage and the setting.

Never before have the Breton team challenged for the Trophee des Champions in its current guise, having gone without silverware since 1983, while the experience of playing in an exotic location is one alien to many of the players.

“It’s a little stuffy, it’s hot and it’s wet, but we’ll get used to it,” captain Damien de Silva said.

Julien Stephan’s side showed on several occasions last term just how dangerous they can be, scoring a 3-1 Europa League win at home over Arsenal, for example, but they will have to be on their mettle immediately this season if they are to halt PSG’s record-breaking Trophee des Champions run.

Abraham proves Chelsea's loan system is a good thing, says Powell

The former Championship manager says that the Blues’ development efforts should be lauded and that their loan policy does not damage the lower leagues

Chris Powell has coached several teams in the Championship and is excited to see players that have featured in the division looking set to start for Chelsea next season in the Premier League.

Chelsea had 42 players out on loan last season and their pathway for youngsters is increasingly being emulated at other clubs in England, with Manchester City operating a similar way.

However, the Blues’ loan policy has also faced much criticism and that has come most notably from both FIFA and UEFA presidents Gianni Infantino and Aleksander Ceferin.

It is expected that a cap will be put on the amount of loanees clubs are allowed to send out, but Charlton Athletic legend Powell thinks that Chelsea are not damaging the English game and points to Abraham as an example of a player who seems ready to play at the top level next season.

“It’s brilliant for individuals to be on loan,” Powell told Goal at at the launch of EFL on Quest. “The loans that a player like Tammy Abraham has had have helped him develop. He has been to Bristol City and he played in the Premier League with Swansea City, then back to Aston Villa to score 20 goals.

“He’s a player that now understands the rigours of playing week in, week out. Similar to [Mason] Mount who has gone back to Chelsea, similar with Harry Wilson at Liverpool – all of these players have had a good experience, what is not to like about that?

“You will see a lot of Championship players being loanees from the Premier League, clubs know that this is a good level of football. It is a very competitive environment. It develops you as a player and a person.”

Chelsea look set to reduce the number of players on loan this summer by making sales and will get a further £58 million ($71m) next summer from selling Alvaro Morata to Atletico Madrid in a deal that has already been agreed.

Lewis Baker and Mario Pasalic, who are on loan at Fortuna Dusseldorf and Atalanta, respectively, could add a further £20m ($24m) with options to buy on their loan contracts.

Meanwhile, a host of youngsters will be fighting again to prove themselves in the Championship. Premier League clubs have increasingly been looking to the division below as transfers between clubs in the top-flight become so expensive.

And Powell picked out one of Frank Lampard’s protégés from last season, Jayden Bogle, as one to watch this season. He says that the Derby defender is alongside Ryan Sessegnon and Tottenham’s Jack Clarke, currently on loan at Leeds United, are the youngsters to keep an eye on.

“Players such as Bogle, the right-back at Derby who had such an exceptional first season, you hope that a player like him can carry on and kick on,” Powell said. “I hope he shows everyone it wasn’t just for one season under Lampard’s tutelage.

“It is about creating a career for himself. There was talk about Premier League clubs moving for him, but he has stayed so far at Derby. I hope he can progress because you want them to have careers and play initially for their local side. He has been with them for a long time and hopefully they can move forward.

“Jack Clarke has gone back on loan to Leeds from signing for Spurs. Hopefully he can have a big say on how Leeds perform next year. There’s a couple of young players at West Brom who have played a few games. Let’s hope that carries on under Slaven Bilic.

“There’s no secret that Spurs have looked at Sessegnon, but you think it should have been done by now. There’s no stopping either team from making it happen. If it does happen, I can’t see why he doesn’t keep playing regular football.

“He made a big impression in the Championship and found it a bit tougher in the Premier League but that’s to be expected of a young player who never played at that level. If he does stay, I am sure he will show everyone what a good player he is again.

“If it doesn’t happen with Fulham, if they don’t go up and get to where they need to go, then if he is still there then he will move on.”

The first show of the 2019/20 season of EFL on Quest begins this Saturday 3rd August at 9pm. The only place to watch free-to-air highlights of the EFL is on Freeview channel 12, Freesat channel 167, Sky channel 144 and Virgin channel 217. Go to https://www.questod.co.uk/

Holloway: Sheffield United 'genius' Morrison must forget Man Utd past

The former QPR boss has tipped his ex-player to succeed on his return to the Premier League after failing to live up to the hype at Old Trafford

Ian Holloway wants his former player Ravel Morrison to forget his Manchester United past as he is granted a Premier League chance at Sheffield United.

Sir Alex Ferguson described his former wonderkid as ‘the best kid you will ever see’, but he has struggled to live up to the hype after moving from club to club for the past few seasons.

Now 26 years old, this might be Morrison’s last chance to make a Premier League career after coming close to an England call-up while at West Ham several years ago.

As he prepares to enter the spotlight in English football once again, Morrison’s former manager at Queens Park Rangers speaks compassionately about his future.

“He hasn’t failed but unfortunately he never lived up to the hype and expectation that he would have liked,” Holloway told Goal at the launch of EFL on Quest. “He had to deal with untold attention because Sir Alex Ferguson said something. To live up to what Sir Alex said is a bit tough.

“I believe he should forget all that and just do what the rest of the lads do. Sheffield United want to dominate the ball and play their way. If they can do that after promotion like Wolves then I would be absolutely delighted for Chris Wilder.

“He is very inventive and bright. Even [Marcelo] Bielsa said ‘well done’ to him. Ravel could fit into that. I want there to be no pressure on Ravel. I want him to be free and believe in himself. He deserves that and I still believe he can do it.

“Players don’t start by dreaming about how much money they can earn, they think how good can I be? Unfortunately, he was told he was going to be the best they have ever been at Manchester United and he didn’t handle that very well. [Paul] Pogba got told that and they got rid of him.

“There were questions on his attitude. The pressure is on him and he could be the best. I want Ravel to enjoy the game as it has been a pressure for him all his life. I think he is brilliant at football, he is a genius at it but only if he enjoys what he does.

“I don’t think I would have enjoyed trying to be Man United’s best player ever. I don’t think I would have enjoyed the pressure either. I hope he sees that. He has a fantastic coach now in Wilder. You can’t look back at your life and move forward because you walk into something. He has to look forward and forget all that.”

The Bramall Lane club will be Morrison’s ninth team in nine years and in that time he has only managed to make 104 appearances. His journey has taken him overseas to Lazio, Atlas in Mexico and most recently to Swedish side Ostersunds FK.

There have been positive signs in pre-season, though, as Morrison earned a standing ovation from Blades fans in a 3-0 friendly win against Matlock Town

Virtual tour service launched for Xinjiang’s attractive highway

Tourists can now enjoy a virtual tour along the Duku Highway, one of China’s most beautiful stretches of road, through a panoramic roaming system.

The highway, connecting Dushanzi in the northern area of Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region and Kuqa county in the south, runs through glaciers, forests, grasslands and various landforms.

After scanning the QR code, travelers will enter a virtual world with various information on the road that runs for over 500 km, such as attractions, service facilities and updated traffic information.

The system was launched by the Transport Department of Xinjiang. It is available via the Wechat account of the department.

The highway is only open around five months every year due to natural factors such as snow and ice.

This year, Xinjiang carried out an upgrade program on the highway by increasing guard railings, installing netting used for rockfall protection and adding more parking areas, viewing platforms, toilets and garbage cans.

Monks carry huge statues of the Thangka Buddha to a fixed platform at the foot of the monastery for people to worship. Tibetan people wear beautiful clothes, bring a year’s harvest as part of a personal pilgrimage, and conduct small-scale material exchange. The most important thing during the event is the grand scene of worshipping the Buddha.

This year, the Festival experienced intense snowfall, adding to the grandeur of the event.

NASA’s TESS satellite uncovers 1st nearby ‘super-Earth’

LOS ANGELES – NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), a mission designed to comb the heavens for exoplanets, has discovered its first potentially habitable world outside the solar system, according to a NASA release on Wednesday.

The new planet orbits a star named GJ 357, an M-type dwarf about one-third the Sun’s mass and size and about 40 percent cooler that our star. The system is located 31 light-years away in the constellation Hydra.

In February, TESS cameras caught the star dimming slightly every 3.9 days, revealing the presence of a transiting exoplanet — a world beyond the solar system — that passes across the face of its star during every orbit and briefly dims the star’s light.

In a new paper in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, a team led by Lisa Kaltenegger, associate professor of astronomy and director of Cornell’s Carl Sagan Institute, models the conditions under which the planet — discovered in early 2019 — could sustain life.

"This is exciting, as this is humanity’s first nearby super-Earth that could harbor life — uncovered with help from TESS, our small, mighty mission with a huge reach," said Kaltenegger.

As this super-Earth exoplanet is more massive than earth, Kaltenegger said this discovery will provide insight into Earth’s heavyweight planetary cousins.

Romantic dramas a sweet TV treat for Qixi

In the past, realistic or tragic TV dramas dominated the Chinese TV market. But this year has seen a big shift as more viewers, especially young women, are turning to sweet romantic dramas with a happy ending.

All of these TV dramas have a similar format. The leading male and female characters are very outstanding in their studies and careers, and have rarely had romantic relationships before they meet. Usually, they fall in love with each other at first sight or after they clear up some misunderstandings. And the couple continues to show affection through the drama.

These dramas also end on positive note. The romantic leads may face difficulties, but never a third wheel. They have faith in each other, support each other, and all the characters in the drama will help them overcome those hardships and get married.

Viewers call couples’ public displays of affection “handing candies” which can pull at their heartstrings and distract themselves from pressure of life. After suffering the slings and arrows of real-life romantic relationships, it can be truly validating and comforting to see your wish for a happy ending reflected on the small screen.

As Qixi, the Chinese Valentine’s Day, approaches, we’ve listed some sweet and romantic Chinese TV dramas below. Don’t wait! Pick one and start watching.
