Southall backs 'naive' James to kick on and become a Man Utd great

The one-time Welsh international shot-stopper sees great potential in his compatriot to make a name for himself at Old Trafford

Former Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall has backed fellow Welshman Daniel James to become a Manchester United great following his debut goal against Chelsea.

The pacy winger, still just 21 years of age, was one of just three new arrivals at Old Trafford and while the other two – Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka – were thrust into the action from the start, James was introduced as a second-half substitute.

However, he rounded off the scoring as Paul Pogba played him in to make it 4-0 and compounded Chelsea’s misery.

And Southall thinks his fearless, direct running is sure to make his countryman a success at United, particularly given his national team manager is Ryan Giggs, a Red Devils legend himself.

“[Daniel James] is playing like a kid with no fear and if he can carry it on, he’ll be fantastic,” Southall told VoucherCodes.co.uk

“At the moment he is sort of naive, but he’s gone in and he’s done what he needed to do. I think if he can carry on playing with freedom like Ryan [Giggs] did, then I think he’ll be great.

“It is really good that he has a manager like Ryan at Wales. I think he’ll be the type of player that Old Trafford give a standing ovation to because he’s positive and he’s quick.

“It’s going to be interesting with Wales, as he becomes more prominent and with Gareth [Bale] being 30-odd, the roles might reverse. At the moment he is one among many and once you become like Ryan [Giggs] or Gareth [Bale], you have to deal with the other stuff football throws at you and it’s whether he will be up to the challenge.

“If he can become the main man and deal with everything thrown at him then that will be great for Wales and great for Manchester United and to be fair it would be great for football.”

Manchester United face a tough trip to Molineux to face Wolves in their next Premier League fixture, and James will be hoping he has done enough to earn himself a start.

Klopp confirms Alisson out for at least 'a couple of weeks' as Liverpool agree one-year Lonergan deal

The Reds have bolstered their ranks with a free agent while details of a recovery time for the Brazilian are still sketchy

Liverpool have agreed a one-year deal for veteran goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, with Jurgen Klopp admitting that Alisson Becker will be out for ‘a few weeks’ with a calf injury.

Alisson pulled up with a calf injury after attempting a goal-kick in Friday evening’s Premier League curtain-raiser, a match which the European champions won 4-1 against Norwich City.

Free agent Adrian was signed as Simon Mignolet’s replacement after the latter departed for Club Brugge in his home country of Belgium.

Former West Ham man Adrian replaced Alisson after 39 minutes and looks set to retain the number one spot until the Brazilian returns, with young shot-stopper Caoimhin Kelleher still not yet fit.

Klopp admitted after the match that Alisson’s injury ‘doesn’t look too good’ and have moved to sign another free agent in Lonergan, the 35-year-old signing a one-year deal with the Anfield side.

Goal can confirm that Lonergan will make Liverpool’s bench on Wednesday as they take on Chelsea for the UEFA Super Cup at Besiktas’ Vodafone Park in Istanbul.

Barring any further injuries, Adrian will start a clash that Klopp’s men will still be odds-on favourites to win.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official website on Monday, Klopp said of Alisson’s injury: “[It’s] not too cool. It’s a calf injury which takes him obviously out for a while.

“I don’t want to make now [an] exact prognosis on when he will be back, but it will not tomorrow for sure, so now then we have to see. It takes a while, it takes a couple weeks for sure, and we have to see.

“I saw already like ‘six weeks’ and stuff like this, but Ali was not a lot injured in his career so I would like to wait a little bit to see how he develops in that process now, but he is not in for the next few weeks.”

Chelsea will hope the the Reds’ loss of Alisson will give them an advantage in Turkey despite Klopp having a fierce back-line at his disposal, with the Blues having fallen to a 4-0 defeat to Man Utd in their first clash of the Premier League season.

Hangzhou Theatre Festival presents global and home-grown creativity

From September 11 to 29, the Hangzhou International Theatre Festival will play host to 24 plays from China and abroad, including five uniquely immersive theater productions.

The Golden Beetle, directed by Zhang Ziqi and Liao Shuyi, will open the festival, featuring female directors’ inner observations. The play will be held at the arts center of Liangzhu in northwestern suburb of Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, designed by Japanese Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando.

The Golden Beetle attaches a great importance to the performers’ body movements and multi-media presentation of imagination and creativity, creating a highly immersive experience, the festival’s artistic director, Meng Jinghui, said during a press meeting on Thursday in Beijing.

Meng believes the power of the play lies in looking at the relationship between the individual and the collective, the dynamic and the static, as well as the connection between people and the environment they stay in.

As one of China’s most influential theater directors himself, Meng has been leading the exploration of immersive theater works across the country, as shown by his 2015 work Mermaid Beside the Still Water and this year’s Stolen Heart. Both Zhang and Liao have also been participating in production of these two plays.

Meng says this year’s event will be the first domestic theater festival that highlights immersive theater productions.

Under Ice from Lithuania, welcomed by last year’s Festival OFF d’Avignon, part of the prominent Avignon Festival in France, and the Belgian piece The Forgotten Land, featuring Chernobyl’s nuclear catastrophe in 1986, as well as works from Brazil and Denmark will also be on show.

Staged at the same time are also domestic experimental works created by the younger generation, alongside traditional Yueju Opera and Peking Opera works, both of which are inscribed on the list of national intangible cultural heritages.

Taiwan painter shown at national art museum

While he studied classic Chinese ink painting at university in Taipei, Chiang Ming-shyan was under the instruction of famed painters such as Pu Xinyu and Huang Junbi. He later traveled a lot in Europe and the United States to learn oil painting. Thereafter he built a visual language of his own that blends the spirit of Chinese ink art and Western paintings.

Scenes from the Belt and Road, an exhibition now on at the National Art Museum of China through Aug 11, shows Chiang’s colored ink paintings. His works depict breathtaking natural landscapes as he journeys at home and across the world.

The exhibition will also tour Nanjing, Jiangsu province and Chengdu, Sichuan province, before opening at China Culture Center in Seoul.

'If Bayern wanted me, they should have moved' – Ziyech reveals reasons for Ajax stay

The Morocco star claims he had already decided to remain in Amsterdam when the Bundesliga champions lined up a swoop for his services

Ajax midfielder Hakim Ziyech has revealed he could have joined Bayern Munich during this summer’s transfer window, but the German club declared their interest too late.

The Morocco international was one of the standout players in an Ajax side which won a domestic double last season, while also reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The 26-year-old registered 21 goals in 49 appearances across all competitions, impressing with his superb passing range and skill in possession.

Ziyech emerged as a transfer target for a number of top European clubs at the end of the 2018-19 campaign, including the likes of Arsenal and Sevilla as well as Bayern.

The mercurial attacker has ultimately decided to remain at Johan Cruyff ArenA for the foreseeable future, after penning a new three-year deal last week.

However, having already turned down an offer from Sevilla, Ziyech has also now revealed that he had the opportunity to join Bayern, and he might have accepted the chance had it been forthcoming at an earlier date.

“I really enjoy playing for Ajax. It feels good [to be entering my fourth season here],” he told Dutch publication AD.

“I am sure Sevilla are a nice club, but I have always said that everything needed to be just right if I were to make a move.

“Sevilla didn’t give me that feeling, so I would rather stay at Ajax. I could have waited for Bayern Munich, yeah. But it felt like the right moment to clarify my situation, both for Ajax and myself.

“If a club wanted me, they could have made their move. I think everybody’s seen what we did with Ajax and what my role was in that success.

“A transfer was never the holy grail for me. If the right club doesn’t come along, so be it. I signed a new deal and will definitely remain at Ajax this season.”

Ziyech is now eager to achieve more success in familiar surroundings, as Ajax kicked off their latest campaign with a 5-0 Eredivise win over FC Emmen on Saturday.

The Morrocan grabbed the second goal of the game and is now hoping Erik ten Hag’s side can prove they are not just one-season wonders over the next 12 months.

“We have a nice team, the atmosphere is great and I am keen to prove that last season’s success wasn’t a fluke,” Ziyech added.

“I am happy here. Money is not really an issue for me. I love football and I get the best football experience here. Attack in possession and press without the ball.

“I have developed in both areas of the game and I enjoy both things. It brings out the best in me. Every player should make his own decisions.”

Next up for Ajax is a Champions League third qualifying round second-leg tie against PAOK at home on Tuesday night, which will begin with the scores level at 2-2 after the first leg.

The 25-year-old has committed his long-term future to the San Mames outfit despite reports linking him with a move to Old Trafford

Athletic Club striker Inaki Williams has signed a new nine-year contract with the Spanish club amid rumours that he was a transfer target for Manchester United.

The highly rated 25-year-old agreed a deal which could keep him at the Liga putfit until June, 2028 while it has also upped his release clause from around €85 million (£81m/$95m) to €135m (£125m/$150m).

Williams, who has been with the Basque side since 2014, has warmly welcomed the move.

“I’m very happy,” he said. “I am proud to be tied to this great club that has given me everything.

“I’ve always said that I’m where I want to be, I’m very happy in Bilbao. I’m very happy at Athletic Club and I just have to show it with work, effort and above all trying to help the team with goals.

“The club has given me everything, I feel it is my home. I only have words of gratitude.”

Williams also set his sights on pushing ahead with his hometown club and progressing their standing.

“Thank you for supporting me. Above all for always being with me in bad times. It’s a day to enjoy to be happy and hopefully great things can come because what I want to make this club bigger if possible.

“This, as you can see, is my house, and all I want I have it here. I’m very proud to be part of Athletic.

The pacey frontman has scored 49 goals in 204 appearances for Athletic Club and has been widely admired across Europe, particularly in the Premier League.

Manchester United have reportedly been monitoring his progress closely, and he was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford as they sought a replacement for Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku eventually left for Serie A giants Inter on deadline day for a fee of €80m (£74m/$90m) but United decided against signing a replacement before the closure of the transfer window.

They were rumoured in Spain to be considering triggering Williams’ release but in the end did not press ahead with their interest.

Manager Ole Gunner Solskjaer selected a twin strike force of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial for United’s Premier League opener against Chelsea on Sunday and they were both on the scoresheet in a 4-0 win.

‘I call him The Beast!’ – Pogba lauds ‘leader’ Maguire after £80m defender’s Man Utd debut

The Red Devils midfielder was among those left impressed by a first showing from the Old Trafford new boy as Chelsea were swept aside 4-0

Paul Pogba has lauded new Manchester United team-mate Harry Maguire, branding him a “leader” after just one appearance for the club and revealing that he now calls him “The Beast”.

The Red Devils moved late in the summer transfer window to bring England international centre-half Maguire onto their books.

A record-breaking £80 million ($96m) deal was required to secure his signature, with the 26-year-old now the most expensive defender in world football.

His hefty price tag has placed added pressure on the former Leicester star, but his debut showing in a 4-0 victory over Chelsea suggests that United have found value for money.

Pogba considers that to be the case, telling French reporters after a positive opening to the 2019-20 campaign for the Red Devils and their big-money addition: “I call him ‘The Beast’.

“Honestly, as you saw, he was really impressive. He is a leader. He fit right in with us in training.

“We talked about controlling the defence well and he has a good understanding with Victor [Lindelof]. It was a very good match to start with from the whole team.

“In the first half, we were dominated in terms of chances and possession, but we reacted in the second.

“Our changes enabled us to take over. We were better in possession and in terms of chances.

“We were lucky to have the lead through the penalty in the first half, but after a bad start, we finished the match well. We are satisfied with our performance.”

Marcus Rashford fired United in front against Chelsea when converting a penalty that he won following a foul by Kurt Zouma.

He grabbed a second of the game in the second half, shortly after Anthony Martial had put the Red Devils in complete control, with substitute Daniel James wrapping up the scoring.

Pogba played his part in a convincing win, with one defence-splitting pass allowing Rashford to find the target, and he has seen signs of encouragement from a new system introduced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The World Cup winner said of new-look United and the role he is being asked to play: “That [position change] has been there for a while now – since before this season.

“In terms of organisation, it is a bit more like how I play with the French national team.

“It does not bother me where I play, whether it is higher or lower, we adapt and enjoy. The team too, we were much better coming out of the back and that is something to keep going with in the coming games.

“Rashy and I understand each other well. We try to do a maximum number of passes like that. I am starting to understand his calls for the ball too and that enables me to find him like I did.”

United will be back in action on Monday August 19 when they take in a trip to Wolves.

'I want him to stay' – Verratti hopes Neymar remains at PSG amid Real Madrid and Barca links

The Brazilian has been linked with a return to Spain before the transfer deadline, but a Parc des Princes team-mate hopes the star will stay

Marco Verratti wants Neymar to stay at Paris Saint-Germain amid reports the mercurial forward is set for an exit from the Ligue 1 champions.

Neymar missed PSG’s 3-0 win over Nimes on Sunday, with his move from the Parc des Princes – reportedly to either Barcelona or Real Madrid – seemingly getting closer.

Thomas Tuchel’s side picked up a comfortable home win in their opening fixture thanks to goals from Edinson Cavani, Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria.

Neymar was targeted by supporters during the match, who called for the 27-year-old to leave the club.

Verratti, who played 90 minutes against Nimes, is eager for the Brazil international to remain with PSG.

“I didn’t listen to that. Supporters can say what they think,” the midfielder told L’Equipe.

“We are very close to Ney. He is a player who gave a lot to Paris. Last year, he scored in important moments.

“As soon as he played, we only talked about him because he is an incredible player who excites everyone.

“I think for him it’s good if things are clear, if he stays or if he leaves. These are things he will manage with the club, but I want him to stay.”

Neymar has scored 51 goals in 58 games for PSG since joining the club from Barcelona for a world-record fee of €222 million ($249m, £207m) two years ago.

However, his time at Parc des Princes has been blighted by injuries and disciplinary issues, with Mbappe taking centre stage for the French champions.

PSG make the trip to Rennes in their second Ligue 1 game of the season on Sunday, before hosting Toulouse seven days later.
