From the mountains to the monitor: Guizhou woman becomes AI trainer

In a bright, clean office, Wang Hongmei intently labels every car displayed on a computer screen with rectangles of different sizes before she uploads them to the server. In the office are rows of PC screens displaying similar content.
Wang, the recipient of a new “AI trainer” certificate from Alibaba, is working side by side with colleagues as the “mother” of the AI, training machines to “read”. Before she became an AI trainer, the 23-year girl was a kindergarten teacher. Although she was happy with her job, she could not always make both meet and had to support her parents with her income.

Wang became an AI trainer by chance, after hearing about the “AI Dou Plan”. Co-launched by Alibaba and the China Women’s Development Foundation, the plan is aimed at helping poverty-stricken populations get employment right at their doorstep. Based in Wanshan district of Guizhou’s Tongren city, the place where Wang Hongmei works is China’s first poverty alleviation incubation space for the “AI Dou Plan”.

Helping machines “understand” the human world is a process similar to teaching an infant to babble out his or her first words. AI machines need trainers as patient as Wang to teach them bit by bit. The first step is to analyze huge amounts of text, pictures and video. But all these materials must first be categorized and labeled by a human.

Wang is a zealous learner. She always picks things up faster than others during label training. “Although AI labeling is far from real AI technology, I always say to my friends ‘We are the people behind the curtain of AI’, so it feels rewarding.” Now locals are rushing to become AI trainers as soon as a new round of enrollment starts.

Chelsea still have quality despite Hazard exit – Van Dijk

Frank Lampard’s side struggled without the Belgian in their opening day defeat at Manchester United

Virgil van Dijk expects to face a different Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup to the Eden Hazard-inspired side that troubled Liverpool last season.

Hazard scored a thrilling winner when the Blues prevailed 2-1 in an EFL Cup tie at Anfield in September and opened the scoring in a 1-1 Premier League draw three days later.

The star winger has since left for Real Madrid and his former club slumped to a 4-0 defeat at Manchester United in Frank Lampard’s first competitive match in charge.

Netherlands defender Van Dijk denied Hazard’s exit would mean Liverpool are set for an easier route to victory in this evening’s encounter in Istanbul.

“[Hazard] is a quality player and he was important to them but I think they have plenty of quality players,” Van Dijk told reporters.

“I think they play a little bit different than they did last year.

“We will analyse them and then we will be prepared.

“Nothing that happened last season will have any impact on what is going to happen. It is going to be a new game.

The defender was, however, focused on his own side ahead of the match.

The Reds picked up three points in their league opener with Norwich, and van Dijk is hoping the club can improve with every game, regardless of the competition.

“They have a new situation at the club there but we want to do better than we did last year and we will see.”

Liverpool head into the match without first-choice goalkeeper Alisson, who injured his calf against the newly-promoted side.

New signing Adrian will step into the starting XI and Van Dijk believes the former West Ham goalkeeper is ready for the occasion.

“I think he played many big games in his career so I don’t think he is going to be nervous or anything,” the centre-back said.

“It is just that he has to do his job with us and hopefully we can win the trophy in the end.”

Adrian entered the 4-1 victory over Norwich just before half-time after Alisson’s injury, but looks set to start against Chelsea tonight, with verteran goalkeeper Andy Lonergan expected to act as back-up.

The former Preston and Leeds shot-stopper looks set to join Klopp’s side on a short-term contract, having played for the European champions during pre-season.

'You cannot replace him individually' – Lampard admits difficulty in coping without Hazard

Chelsea must step up as a group to replace their former winger, who made the move to Real Madrid this summer

Chelsea head coach Frank Lampard believes it is “pretty much impossible” to replace Eden Hazard with another individual.

Hazard starred during seven campaigns at Stamford Bridge, but made a close-season move to Real Madrid for a reported €100 million (£92.7m/$112m).

The Belgium international was directly involved in 31 Premier League goals (16 goals and 15 assists) during the 2018-19 season and his departure leaves a huge hole for Chelsea to fill.

Lampard said Hazard – who won two Premier League titles and two Europa League crowns with Chelsea – could not be replaced by just one player.

“I was a huge fan of Eden Hazard as a Chelsea fan, I played with him,” he told a news conference ahead of his side’s UEFA Super Cup clash against Liverpool on Wednesday.

“For me, clearly one of the best players in world football and last season, but not just last season, over his time at Chelsea he was the most productive player in the team generally, in terms of assists and goals and a leader.

“You cannot replace him individually, I think it’s pretty much impossible because of the high, high level he is at now in his career.

“But the good news and the positive news for us and we must stay calm and be patient with this [is] we have a group of players, some younger players, some experienced players, that now have the opportunity to show that collectively and individually they can step up because yes, you are missing a huge amount of assists and goals, that’s clear.

“The answer is as a team, we have to find a way to carry on because a football club like Chelsea will always carry on. Eden Hazard, John Terry, Didier Drogba, players improve on and it’s down to the next players, the next manager. That’s our big challenge now, to say good luck to Eden Hazard and to carry on as Chelsea.”

Lampard’s first competitive game in charge was a miserable one, with Chelsea humbled 4-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Still, the former Derby County boss believes in his team ahead of their meeting with the European champions in Istanbul.

“I am optimistic because I believe in the players and I believe in the fact we are here in the final because we deserve to be,” Lampard said.

“That is the achievement of the players and the club last season, not myself, but I am proud to be here managing the team.

“I understand the quality of Liverpool, the team that deservedly won the Champions League. They have an outstanding manager [Jurgen Klopp] and group of players and we know it is going to be a big test, but I believe in my players and if we play to our maximum we can win the match.”

Nation’s major telecom companies race to commercialize 5G

China’s major telecommunications carriers are racing to commercialize 5G services, aiming to be at the forefront of the next-generation mobile communication revolution and generate new streams of revenue.

China Telecommunications Corp, the country’s third-largest operator by mobile subscribers, announced it will officially launch 5G commercial services in September, marking an accelerated push in 5G application. The expected plan was to commercialize the technology in October this year.

China Telecom said on Monday it has decided to sell mobile phone numbers for 5G use in Beijing from next month to especially target new users, Beijing Daily reported.

According to the company, current telecom users do not need to change their SIM card and mobile numbers. After purchasing a 5G smartphone, they are able to upgrade their previous 4G package to a 5G package. The company claimed the price of a monthly 5G data package ranges from 199 yuan ($28) to 599 yuan.

Xiang Ligang, director-general of the Information Consumption Alliance, a telecom industry association, estimated that major telecom carriers such as China Mobile and China Unicom will also officially introduce 5G data packages in September.

“The 199 yuan 5G package is too expensive,” Xiang added. “In fact, China Telecom still lags a little behind compared with other operators in terms of 5G ability. Offering a high-price 5G package, it is trying to attract a certain number of 5G users instead of users on a large scale in the short term. It will be very hard to maintain such a high-price package considering the uphill battle with archrivals. I believe the 5G package will be around 100 yuan or even lower in the future.”

The high-speed 5G technology is expected to revolutionize the tech world in the near future, as it will be able to transmit data at least 10 times faster than 4G.

The three major telecom carriers – China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom – are accelerating their pace of investment in 5G construction, as part of their goal to be successful in the upcoming 5G era.

China Unicom recently said it has already launched short-term 5G monthly experience services.

Yang Jie, chairman of China Mobile, said in the company’s 2019 interim report that the company plans to set up more than 50,000 5G base stations in China this year and launch 5G commercial services in more than 50 cities.

In the first half of 2019, China Mobile, with 935 million mobile customers, reported operating revenue of 389.4 billion yuan, a decrease of 0.6 percent year-on-year.

As the traditional telecom market is becoming almost saturated, it is increasingly hard for carriers to boost revenue by relying on traditional growth drivers alone.

Xiang noted given the government’s push to boost speed and reduce mobile data tariffs, operators are under certain pressure and it is difficult to see steady growth in revenues.

“Today, major telecom carriers are gearing up to develop 5G. It’s really difficult to see robust growth in the short term. But we will see a significant jump in the next two to three years,” Xiang added. “5G construction will not only bring operators opportunities and new streams of revenue, but also boost the development of the whole industry and economic growth.”

Kids’ camps cool summer stress

To ensure that their children are engaged and well cared for during the holidays, more and more Chinese moms and dads are sending them to summer camps across the city, Cao Chen reports in Shanghai.

The annual summer vacation may be a time of fun for children, but for parents, this period is usually one filled with headaches as they fret over child care matters.

While it was common for foreign parents to enroll their children in summer camps or hire nannies to provide child care, most Chinese parents usually relied on their parents for help – until now.

“It was part of Chinese culture that grandparents lend a helping hand to their offspring who are too busy to take care of their children,” says Lu Yongbin, a teacher from the School of International and Public Affairs at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

An online survey by China Youth Daily in 2018 showed that 94.9 percent of the parents polled usually get their parents to help care for their kids.

“It’s not safe to leave children alone at home because they might just spend all day watching television programs or playing computer games when there isn’t adult supervision,” says Gui Li, who has a son attending Grade 5 in Shanghai.

“It’s difficult to fully focus on my work during his vacation.”

But mindsets are changing. Today, an increasing number of Chinese parents are signing their children up for summer camps.
