Madrid outcast Bale scores after coming on at half-time against Arsenal

Expected to leave the Spanish giants this close season, the winger came on at half-time against Arsenal and scored quickly upon his introduction

Real Madrid outcast Gareth Bale was introduced by Zinedine Zidane at half-time in the International Champions Cup clash with Arsenal.

Bale has been tipped for an imminent departure from Madrid after he was left out of the squad for last week’s defeat to Bayern Munich.

Zidane confirmed Bale was close to leaving the Santiago Bernabeu, with the Madrid boss determined to sell the Wales international sooner rather than later.

Bale – linked to the Chinese Super League – was among the substitutes in Maryland on Tuesday and he came off the bench as 10-man Madrid trailed Arsenal 2-0 at the interval.

Madrid had Nacho Fernandez sent off for a handball in the ninth minute before Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put Arsenal in control.

But with Bale leading the line in place of Karim Benzema, the Spanish giants stormed back rather quickly.

It was the Welsh star who pulled the first goal back for his club, popping up in the right place to poke home 56 minutes in.

A fine finish from Marco Asensio three minutes later pulled Madrid level, putting home a low Marcelo cross as the clubs continued to put on quite a show.

Bale nearly scored a second just after the hour mark, slipping between Arsenal defenders to get a clever re-directed shot on the Arsenal goal only to be denied by a fine save.

The time on the pitch may prove to be a rare moment of calm for the 30-year-old, who has seen a war of words between his manager and his agent in recent days played out in the press.

But it seems the situation may have calmed down a bit as the new week got underway.

“I’ll try to be very clear with this, with Gareth,” Zidane told a news conference on Monday.

“Firstly, I have not disrespected anyone, least of all a player because I always said the same thing, that players are the most important thing and every time there is a player here I am always with them.

“Secondly, I said the club was trying to get him out. Period.

“Thirdly, the other day Gareth didn’t play because he didn’t want to. He said the club was trying to negotiate his departure he and didn’t want to play because of that.

“So far, Bale hasn’t asked not to play tomorrow.”

Even that seemingly changed overnight, with the Wales star coming on for the full second half, but it wasn’t all positive for Bale.

The match finished 2-2 in regular time and went to penalties, where Madrid would win 3-2. But Bale, who took the first spot kick for the Spanish side, saw his shot saved rather comfortably.

Tottenham flop Janssen joins Liga MX side Monterrey in £6m deal

The Mexican club added another piece to an already strong front line with the signing of the Dutch forward from the Premier League outfit

Monterrey added another attacking piece to the club’s already talented roster with the signing of Vincent Janssen from Tottenham.

The Premier League outfit announced the move, with the Liga MX side reportedly paying €7 million (£6m/$8m) for the forward.

Janssen joined Spurs in 2016 from AZ Alkmaar and made 42 appearances for the club while also spending time away on loan to Fenerbahce.

The 25-year-old never really found his footing with Spurs but was a standout performer in his home country before making the jump to the Premier League, having netted 20 goals in the second half of the 2015-16 Eredivisie season for AZ.

He would finish the year with 27 in total, topping the Dutch top flight scoring charts.

Janssen joins a Rayados outfit that is far from devoid of attacking options.

Monterrey won the 2019 Concacaf Champions League and has been a consistent contender for Liga MX glory in recent times.

The Dutch striker will link up with an attacking side that already boasts Colombian star Dorlan Pabon, Argentine Rogelio Funes Mori, veteran Aviles Hurtado and Mexican international Rodolfo Pizarro.

The club lost its opening match of the 2019 Apertura to Club America 4-2, though Funes Mori and Pabon both found the net.

Rayados are also looking to capture an elusive league title. Monterrey last came out on top in the 2010 Apertura and has finished as the runner-up three times since then.

The club will have the chance to get its season back on track Sunday against Atletico San Luis.

For Janssen, the move to Mexico offers him a chance to reboot his career and he will be hoping to follow the lead of Andre-Pierre Gignac, a fellow European forward who made the move to Liga MX with Tigres in 2015 and has become one of the stars of the league.

Janssen struggled with injury during his loan spell at Fenerbahce and returned to Spurs last year to make a mere three substitute appearances.

The forward netted just two top-flight goals for Tottenham in his time with the club and struggled to ever nail down a place in the first team.

Theme song of movie dealing with father-son relationship a big hit on streaming sites

With Chinese actor-director Deng Chao’s latest directorial work, Looking Up, hitting the screens on July 18, the theme song of the film, The One Who Believes in You, performed by Hong Kong singer Eason Chan, has become of the most streamed songs on major music streaming sites.

Written by Taiwan songwriters Salsa Chan and Daryl Yao, the song portrays the relationship between father and son, echoing the plot of the movie, in which Deng plays the role of a father encouraging his son to pursue his dream.

Recalling how he got involved in doing the song, Chan said he first met Deng during the Golden Horse Awards in Taipei last year, where Deng, along with his actress wife, Sun Li, had been nominated for awards for their roles in Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou’s movie, Shadow. Chan was also one of the guest performers during the gala.

Speaking about that encounter, Chan says: “We then exchanged phone numbers and a few months later, Deng invited me to watch his new movie.

“I was touched by the father-and-son story as I am also a father. And no matter what, we fathers, always have faith in our kids.

“Then I got an invitation to do the song.”

Deng also thanked Chan for his passion and sincerity while working on the song.

Palace Museum virtually prepared for digital visitors

More than 1.86 million cultural relics are housed in the Palace Museum in Beijing, China’s imperial palace from 1420 to 1911, also known as the Forbidden City.

While administrators at the museum have endeavored to put more artifacts from the collections of former emperors on display, they still have to face the challenges posed by the limited exhibition space in what is the world’s largest architectural complex made of wood, which has extraordinarily high standards for safety.

Fortunately, digitization creates a way for more cultural relics to be viewed by the public, often providing a better experience than seeing them in exhibition halls.

Last week, high-definition pictures of more than 50,000 highlighted cultural relics from the Palace Museum went online via the institution’s official website, which will be constantly updated.

“We’re in the middle of a digital revolution, and the traditional display of artifacts in museums is becoming more challenging,” Wang Xudong, director of the Palace Museum, says. “The digitization process at the Palace Museum has been in operation for 20 years, so this project to better share our achievement with the public is like its coming-of-age ceremony.”

The 50,000 digitized items include cultural relics of all varieties from the palace collection, ranging from paintings, sculptures and jade ware, to textiles, porcelain and antique clocks, among others.

Sun Jing, a system operator from the digital information department at the Palace Museum, considers the establishment of the database crucial to the preservation of cultural relics, and is keen to laud its many benefits to the public.

“It will facilitate scholars’ research,” Sun says. “And people who love traditional culture will be able to gain a better insight by ‘playing’ with the artifacts in creative ways.”

Some pieces, like sculptures, enamels, lacquerware and porcelain, have been captured in 3D, which enables viewers to manipulate the image to view them from any angle they want, and in greater detail.

And 325 key paintings including Bunian Tu (Emperor Taizong Receiving Tibetan Envoy) from the Tang Dynasty (618-907), one of the most important ancient Chinese paintings, are included in an app for mobile devices, which displays them in high-definition. According to Sun, each painting is rendered in a resolution of over 1 billion pixels. He says that around 50 paintings will be added to the app every month.

“I don’t think you will be able to see the subjects’ faces as clearly when you view the painting in the exhibition hall, no matter how hard you try to press your face against the glass of cabinet,” Sun smiles.

It is not only treasures in the palace that are being given a greater chance of exposure by being exhibited in cyberspace.

“The biggest exhibit in the palace is the architecture,” says Zhu Kai, a photographer working at the museum.

His works recording the sensational grandeur of the ancient architecture often go viral on social networks, but he has a renewed sense of pride now-as a member of the museum’s virtual reality team.

A program called The Panoramic Palace Museum was also released through the official website last week, offering users the immersive experience of a virtual visit to the architectural complex.

According to Zhu, the platform, which resembles Google Street View, is built on numerous pictures taken from 884 locations around the museum. All the accessible areas in the compound have been recorded for the platform, as well as a few places which are still inaccessible to visitors on the ground.

More importantly, there are no overwhelming crowds blocking the view, which no one actually visiting the Palace Museum can avoid.

“The palace looks empty on the platform,” Zhu says. However, his team were only allowed to take photos during the Forbidden City’s opening hours, so he constantly had to repeat the phrase: “Excuse me, please move aside a little bit. I’m taking a picture.”

For the public, what digitization brings probably goes beyond a better view of exhibits. Since the Palace Museum signed a cooperation agreement with Huawei in March to comprehensively install a 5G network in the next few years, it opens the door to even greater possibilities.

Ye Yipei, an artificial intelligence engineer at the museum, has high expectations. Her team is in the process of establishing a database for each of the relics, which uses AI technology to help answer basic questions posed by tourists through the use of interactive graphics delivered through a specialist app.

Currently, it includes about 7,000 artifacts.

“Regarding the 1.86 million relics, this number is still too small to support a clever algorithm,” she says. “However, as long as enough data is collected, maybe visitors will be able to see the exhibits and simultaneously consult with their phone to discover the stories behind the relics.”

First property technology accelerator program launched in the mainland

The first accelerator for corporate property technology, or proptech, in China was launched to provide market players with innovative solutions so that property firms can leverage new technologies to expand their business.

The accelerator program, known as UrbanLab, was launched by JLL, Swire Properties and Ping An Urban Tech, and will foster and develop promising tech companies in the Chinese proptech ecosystem.

UrbanLab is the first corporate accelerator program in the Chinese mainland that focuses on property technology.

“Real estate alone… accounts for about 7 percent for China’s GDP. If we add the accelerator associated activities to it, it can increase its contribution to the total GDP,” said KK Fung, chief executive officer of Greater China at JLL.

“The Chinese mainland is the key growth market for Swire Properties, and it is a tech powerhouse well-known for its pioneering and tailor-made solutions,” added Guy Bradley, chief executive of Swire Properties.

Proptech refers to a wide spectrum of digital and technological trends in the real estate industry such as innovative products, digital business models, smart buildings, and smart cities.

China is one of the most dynamic markets for proptech in the world, especially given the country’s leadership in 5G technology. Artificial intelligence platforms for developers have been built, and AI technology behind self-driving cars is also seen as combining advanced consumer and industrial technologies.

CB Insights said proptech investment has reached $40 billion globally, and China tops the Asia-Pacific region by investing more than $1 billion into the sector.

Run by the Ping An Cloud accelerator team, UrbanLab will select six to 12 mature proptech startups. During the three-month program, participants will have an opportunity to test and refine their products in a real-world environment, namely at Swire Properties’ two large-scale developments in Shanghai – HKRI Taikoo Hui and Taikoo Li Qiantanas well as at JLL and Ping An Urban Tech’s projects in Shanghai.

The program’s targeted technology areas are automation, analytics, smart buildings, AI, facilities management, construction, tenant experience, customer engagement and sustainability.

“We understand innovation is key for growth. Therefore, we constantly search for implementing cutting edge tech solutions to make our business more efficient and enhance customer experience,” said Bradley.

The startups will be selected from JLL, Swire Properties and Ping An Group’s networks. In addition to being mentored by industry leaders and experts, participants will have opportunities to connect with investors to discuss funding prospects.

“We are providing an opportunity to urban innovators to test their solutions in the Chinese mainland, specifically technology solutions that can change the urban planning, real estate and infrastructure industries,” said Wei Baisong, chief technology officer at Ping An Urban Tech, a subsidiary of Chinese insurance company the Ping An Group.

Wei said they hoped to form an urban ecosystem that can benefit customers and partners in the long run, adding that “UrbanLab is a good starting point”.

UrbanLab is now accepting applications until the end of August. Tech startups based in the Chinese mainland with functioning products and business models, and are trial and implementation-ready, can apply.

A lot of capital is flowing into real estate. In the next few years, experts believe the opportunities are going to increase further. Key areas of investments in China are space visualization technologies, the internet of things, AI, building information modeling, smart cities and Logitech.

Manchester United fall behind Real Madrid, Barcelona in Forbes' most valuable teams list

The Red Devils have dropped in a list dominated by U.S. sports teams, with eight football clubs making the cut

Manchester United have fallen behind Real Madrid and Barcelona in the list of Forbes’ 50 most valuable teams – with the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys once again coming in at the top spot.

The Red Devils dropped from second in the 2018 list to sixth as Real (third) and Barca (fourth) both retained their positions achieved last year.

It is the fourth successive year that the Cowboys have topped the list – with a value of $5 billion – more than iconic MLB team the Yankees ($4.6b) and Real ($4.24b) and Barca ($4.02b), with the NBA’s New York Knicks ($4b) rounding out the top five.

Bayern Munich checks in at the 17th position while  Manchester City and Chelsea were named at spots 25 and 32, respectively.

Arsenal and Liverpool are the final two football sides included among the top 50 with the Gunners checking in at No. 42 while the Champions League winners come in at 45.

Of the 50 highest-rated sports TV broadcasts last year in the U.S., nine were regular-season Cowboys games. The team’s popularity helps owner Jerry Jones bring in an estimated $340 million in sponsorship and seating revenue at AT&T Stadium, which is twice as much as any other team, Forbes noted.

“On and off the field, in season and out of season, there is a small soap opera going on every day,” Jones told Forbes last year. “Everyone knows that marketing, especially in this day and time, is just another way to promote the circus, so to speak.”

The NFL as a whole is still the most dominant sports league as more than half of the top 50 are football teams.

The NBA has also increased its value as the Knicks headline nine basketball teams on the list this year, ahead of the Los Angeles Lakers ($3.7b) and the Golden State Warriors ($3.5b).

When does the transfer window close for Premier League, La Liga & other major European leagues?

Last season, the Premier League’s transfer window shut before the rest of Europe – but when will Spain, Italy and France cease to do business?

The 2018-19 season saw the Premier League bring forward the end of their transfer window from August 31 to the day before the start of the campaign, and the same will follow this year.

The rest of Europe, however, have not changed their deadline day and their window will shut after the Premier League’s.

Following Premier League clubs voting to eliminate excessive transfer drama related to deadline day, the end date for the transfer window has been brought almost a month earlier to keep in accordance with the new rules.

So when does the transfer window for the Premier League and other European leagues close this year? Goal has the information.

Like last season, after Premier League clubs voted to end the summer transfer window before the start of last season to avoid disrupting their campaign, it will close this year on Thursday, 8 August at 5pm.

The 2019-20 Premier League season kicks off with Liverpool and Norwich on August 9.

Clubs in England will still be able to sell to other leagues, but will no longer be allowed to buy after August 8 – changing the former insanity and chaos of deadline day.

The rule change will only affect Premier League clubs, so La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 will still cooperate under the old rules and have their transfer windows start and end later.

Tottenham have already done big business in signing Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon, while Manchester City secured the services of Rodri and Man Utd signed Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace.

Major European leagues such as La Liga, Ligue 1 and Bundesliga will have their transfer windows close on September 2, while Serie A will have theirs shut on August 23.

The likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona have already completed a great deal of their summer business, signing Eden Hazard and Antoine Griezmann respectively.

Juventus have also dipped into the transfer market and signed Matthijs de Ligt for €75 million (£67m/$84m) from Ajax, making the defender’s fee the third-highest ever paid for a teenager.

FIFA 20 Pro Clubs: Five changes we want to see on new game

The mode is widely considered as one of the most enjoyable in the annual series with a dedicated fanbase – but it needs an update

FIFA 20 has been revealed to the world and we’ve been given some details on this year’s changes but there’s still a lot more to come.

EA Sports has laid out a plan for the rest of the year in which they will drip-feed announcements. One of those is the updates to one of FIFA fans’ most beloved modes, Pro Clubs.

Ultimate Team will always get the most attention but it’s safe to say that Pro Clubs deserves some love considering the changes in FIFA 19 were minimal.

Playing Pro Clubs with your friends is one of best experiences a FIFA game can give you, which is why this update is so exciting. To help you with the wait, here are five changes Goal is hoping to see.

Let’s start off with one of the most in-demand upgrades: more customisation options.

While there are obvious options like more hairstyles, football boots, tattoos etc, there’s a room for much more. For starters, following the thrilling World Cup this year, there should certainly be the option to create and play as a female pros – we’ve already seen it in the core game and Volta.

But why only stop at player customisation? There doesn’t need to be licensing issues in Pro Clubs so why not give players the option to create their own badge and kits? And also let them customise and name all of our AI players, perhaps then people wouldn’t get as angry at their computer-controlled team-mates.

2. Volta

The biggest addition to FIFA 20 is the Volta street football mode that has reminded more than a few fans of the popular FIFA Street series. Probably the biggest demand following the announcement at EA Play was a Pro Clubs version of the mode.

A street football mode to play online with friends would be sensational. Not only for the satisfaction of nutmegging your friend in-game but also because finding enough people for a full three-man or five-man team is much easier than completing a full 11.

Plus, Volta already has you create a pro so why not give players the option to play with friends? The mode takes you through the streets, facing off against teams of all different styles which would make for a very refreshing Pro Clubs experience. It’s a match made in heaven.

Creating a currency and/or reward system for Pro Clubs would offer more purpose and replay-ability to the mode.

Players could use this currency to unlock new hairstyles, new kits or even attribute upgrades for either yourself or AI teammates.

This would also give more meaning to the random cups and tournaments you can play in, giving players valuable, perhaps limited edition, rewards would give people more reason to play and would surely increase the number of regular players.

EA Sports is clearly aware how to use objectives and rewards to get players coming back time and time again in Ultimate Team, so why not take those learnings into Pro Clubs.

While Pro Clubs is certainly competitive, the real beauty of the mode is joking around with your friends.

With a fair bit of downtime while waiting for everyone to be ready or to find a match, an open-arena training ground for you and your teammates to simultaneously mess around in would be a fantastic addition to the mode.

Can you imagine having one friend as a goalkeeper while the rest of you play a virtual game of headers and volleys? Or more realistically, imagine slide tackling your friends repeatedly while they try to practice their shooting.

With so many courts being brought into FIFA 20 for Volta, the chance to create a virtual playground for Pro Club fans has never been greater.

Finally, a welcome addition from FIFA Ultimate Team would be a Pro Clubs version of Squad Battles.

While playing against AI initially doesn’t sound as interesting, it could be a great break from online play that would tie in perfectly to the rewards suggestion from earlier. Imagine having your team of friends play against Barcelona or perhaps a team of Icons?

Then, add to the prospect that if you beat that team at a certain difficultly and complete certain challenges, you could then take on of those players or at least that players’ stats to use as one of your own AI team-mates – a bit like FIFA Street’s ability to recruit players as you progress.

This could be a fun way to unlock items and would also give you something to play if you can’t get enough friends online one evening.
