Walmart to invest 8b yuan in logistics, supply chains

Walmart China plans to invest 8 billion yuan ($1.16 billion) in logistics and supply chains in the next 10 to 20 years, including building or updating more than 10 distribution centers to improve its supply chain capacity, the company’s top executive said.

Ryan McDaniel, senior vice president of Walmart China Supply Chain, said Monday that the company will continue to add investment in the supply chain to boost its online-and-offline businesses to better meet demands from Chinese consumers on fresh goods and convenience services.

The retailer’s 700 million yuan perishable distribution center in South China is the largest single investment in Walmart’s 23-year history in the country.

Since operations started in March, the center has supplied more than 100 stores in South China’s Guangdong province and Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, a region that has strong preferences for fresh goods.

The center in Dongguan city covers 33,700 square meters and can cope with more than 4,000 kinds of merchandise that require freezing or constant temperatures. Its cold chain storage capacity in the region has increased five times.

Walmart requires vehicles to pre-freeze the cargo area before being loaded and temperatures of all vehicles are monitored during transportation to guarantee the quality of fresh goods quality and their delivery to a store.

Neville says England will catch up with 'standard-bearers' USA

The Lionesses manager thinks his side are on the right track despite being beaten by the reigning Women’s World Cup champions

The United States may have beaten England to return to the Women’s World Cup final, but Phil Neville is adamant his Lionesses will eventually bridge the gap.

England suffered a third successive semi-final defeat at a major tournament as Jill Ellis’ defending champions claimed a 2-1 victory in Lyon even without an injured Megan Rapinoe to reach their third straight final.

Rapinoe’s replacement, Christen Press, headed in the first and though Ellen White equalised for the Lionesses, Alex Morgan scored what proved to be the winner as Steph Houghton had a late penalty saved by USA goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher.

USA can now move into England’s hotel, with members of their backroom team having controversially done so before the semi-final, but Neville warned that they will not remain on their perch forever having seen how his old club Manchester United have struggled since Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.

“They can now have our hotel,” Neville joked.

“They’re the standard-bearers. I played for a football club that won a lot in a long space of time. We were the ones that everyone wanted to catch.

“Eventually teams caught Man United and eventually we will catch USA. At the moment they’re the best team because of that winning mentality.

“We will get there, we are closing the gap.

“We’ve got to keep investing in the pathway, driving standards within our leagues and young players. We’ve got to keep having sustained success and keep building the momentum that we’ve got.

“America have got that winning mentality of knowing what it means to win. We will get that, we’re learning that, developing that, coaching that every single day.

“It doesn’t happen overnight, it takes time. We will get there.”

England pushed their vaunted opponents hard, particularly in the second half, when White saw a goal disallowed by a fractional offside call and captain Steph Houghton missed a penalty.

The Lionesses will be looking to bounce back with a win in the third-place play-off against either the Netherlands or Sweden on Saturday, ahead of Sunday’s final.

From there, minds will be cast further ahead with the 2020 Olympics and Euro 2021 next on the agenda. Neville is expected to lead a Team GB side dominated by England players at the Olympics, with the Euros to be held on home soil.

Brazil vs Argentina: TV channel, live stream, squad news & preview

Neither of the South American giants has hit their best ahead of the 2019 Copa America, but one will progress to face Chile or Peru in the final

Copa America hosts Brazil will tackle great rivals Argentina in the first semi-final of the 2019 edition in Belo Horizonte.

Tite’s Selecao have not been entirely convincing as they have reached the final four, and though they are undefeated struggled past Paraguay on penalties after a scoreless draw last Thursday.

Argentina, meanwhile, have been criticised throughout this tournament but are the only semi-finalists who did not need spot kicks to progress. Goals from Lautaro Martinez and Giovanni Lo Celso gave them a 2-0 win over Venezuela, though again it was a performance that left much to be desired.

Which of these misfiring giants will make the final?

The tension is rising in Brazil ahead of the climax of the 2019 Copa America. The national team’s comparatively lamentable performance in international competition means that there is pressure on this side – hot favourites to win the tournament at its outset – to fulfil their destiny, but indifferent performances have failed to reassure fans or coach Tite that they are capable of going all the way.

Indeed, the coach has admitted to having sleepless nights ahead of the semi-final clash with Argentina, doubtless haunted by performances against Venezuela and Paraguay that were both thoroughly indifferent and both ended in scoreless draws through 90 minutes.

“I couldn’t sleep properly, I’m not Superman, I’m the way I am and I can deal with that,” he explained on Monday. “Yesterday I woke up at 3.15 am, I was thinking about what I’m going to do.”

Unlike their previous opponents, Brazil will have to tackle a world-class force in this game in the form of Lionel Messi – a player who cannot be entirely contained, the coach has argued.

“You can’t eliminate Messi, you might be able to reduce what he can do but you can’t neutralise a player of that level, just as you can’t neutralise Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino, Willian, David Neres – at some point, they will produce something,” he said.

If Messi is still feared in Brazil, Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni has been forced to defend the five-time Ballon d’Or winner after a tournament that has yet to be touched by his magic.

“We’re used to him scoring three goals per match or for him to take out five players from the opposition, but I’m more than happy with him,” he said. “The players have so much support for Leo that at times they say they want to be champions more for him than themselves.

“There’s no doubt the best player in the history of football is missing a trophy with the Argentina national team and it’s for that reason his team-mates say things like that.”

Argentina, meanwhile, have a formidable record when it comes to playing in semi-finals, having won 12 of their previous 13 trips to the last four. Among these was a blistering 4-0 win over the USA in the 2016 Copa America, a match in which Messi starred.

A repeat performance in one of international football’s biggest fixtures would be most welcome.

A new hero rises! Naeher shakes off the critics to earn her place in USWNT lore

The USWNT goalkeeper was the hero against England in the World Cup semifinal, as her late penalty save saw the U.S. reach the final

She has been criticized. She has been questioned. She has been compared unfavorably to her predecessors.

But on Tuesday night, Alyssa Naeher became a U.S. women’s national team hero.

The U.S. goalkeeper made a massive fingertip save in the first half to deny a long-range strike from Keira Walsh in what was her best moment of the World Cup thus far.

But Naeher most certainly saved her best for last.

The USWNT and Naeher had been saved once by VAR, the video assistant having ruled out and Ellen White goal that seemed to be the leveler.

But VAR then awarded England a penalty with just five minutes remaining in the World Cup semifinal in Lyon, handing the Lionesses a chance to tie the game from the spot as the USWNT clung to a 2-1 lead.

It was a moment the U.S. needed their goalkeeper to step up, and Naeher certainly obliged.

Naeher produced a sprawling save to her right to deny Steph Houghton, coming up with the moment she’s been hoping for the entire World Cup.

“I don’t really remember to be honest,” Naeher said of her save. “I just tried to let instincts take over at that point and just try to get a good jump on it, get a good read and hope to make a save.”

The U.S. would hold on to win 2-1, advancing to the World Cup final for the third consecutive tournament.

“There’s no words I can give you to let you know how proud I personally am of Alyssa and how proud our entire team is,” Christen Press said. “It was so epic.”

For Naeher, it was vindication in the biggest possible way. She’s been constantly questioned in her first major tournament as the team’s starter, as she takes over from Hope Solo as the USWNT No. 1.

All along, Naeher has stayed even-keeled, trying to avoid getting caught up in comparisons.

“I’ve said from the beginning that I just try to be me,” Naeher said. “My goal every day is being a better person and a better player than I was yesterday.

“To me it’s not about comparisons, it’s about how I can help this team win here in 2019.”

Naeher has had some questionable moments to be sure. Against Chile in the group stage, she whiffed on a through ball that went straight past her into the goal, only for the offside flag to save her.

Then against Spain in the last 16, Naeher was partially at fault on Spain’s opener, as she played Becky Sauerbrunn the ball in a tight spot before the defender lost possession and watched Jenni Hermoso find the back of the net.

Throughout it all, Naeher has kept her cool as her teammates and coach Jill Ellis have continued to back her, insisting she would come through for them.

On the biggest stage and on the biggest moment, that’s exactly what Naeher did.

“She’s making her own mark and creating her own legacy,” Ellis said after the game, “and that’s fantastic.”

The USWNT goalkeeper may not Briana Scurry and she may not be Hope Solo. But she is Alyssa Naeher. On Tuesday night, that’s all she needed to be.

US analytics firm SAS plans to hitch AI to real economy

US-based analytics firm SAS plans to invest $1 billion yuan in artificial intelligence in the coming three years, with China a major target market where the company sees huge demand on the back of the Chinese government’s emphasis on AI development, said one of its top executives.

“Through software innovation, education empowerment, and specialist service, we will continue to empower analysis-related industries and the country’s real economy,” said Gavin Day, senior vice-president of SAS.

He said that part of the investment will flow into SAS’ research and development center in Beijing. The rest will be used to bridge the talent gap.

“There is a huge shortage of talent in China. Not everyone understands the power of analytics, and how it operates. We are investing in local universities in China and with our partners to help teach analytics to the next generation.”

SAS has issued over 70 master’s degrees in China’s universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, and Renmin University of China. In addition, it has successfully held six analytics contests in China’s universities.

Initially, there were merely 55 teams from three contest regions. The latest contest attracted 1,300 teams from 31 contest regions.More than 3,600 participants evinced interest in considering analytics as a career.

“We noted that China’s demand for AI talent is growing dramatically, and related education is a must. Through educational investment, SAS is empowering China’s next generation of analytics talents,” said He Weixin, managing director of SAS China.

In 2017, the State Council issued a guideline on AI development, with a goal of keeping China’s overall AI technology and application level in line with the world’s advanced level by 2020. It also underlined making China a forerunner in the world in terms of AI knowledge, technology and application by 2030.

Last year’s Government Work Report introduced instructions to promote the development of the new generation of AI, especially in the fields of healthcare, pensions, culture, education, and sports.

At the beginning of this year, the government highlighted that AI development should be integrated into the country’s real economy, and that the industry should be market-driven, to stimulate enterprises’ power of innovation and vitality of internal growth.

A recent International Data Corp report showed that in 2018,China’s AI market size in terms of sales revenue reached $1.76 billion. The figure is expected to reach $11.9 billion by 2023. By 2030, China is expected to take a lead in the world in terms of AI theory, technology and application, and become a major AI innovation center.

Zhu Guang, CEO of Du Xiaoman Financial, the financial arm of Baidu, said: “In China, in the coming five to 10 years, AI technology will be deeply integrated into every industry. Some major companies will offer better instruments and better algorithms, to spread the AI revolution to every industry. The wave of AI gives people more time to use imagination and creativity,in order to make things that cannot be replaced by machines better.”

So, SAS established a financial incubation center in Nanjing,Jiangsu province, in East China, integrating its financial system into the local ecosystem. It also set up an internet of things partnership with the local government of Wuxi, Jiangsu province, using its technology to energize the city’s outdated industries.

Last year, at the China International Big Data Industry Expo in Guiyang, Guizhou province, SAS teamed up with local financial institutions to set up a big data lab.The goal was to nurture talent and incubate new projects. It also partnered with the municipal government of Shenzhen, Guangdong province, on a manufacturing project.

“We value the Chinese market, where we must guarantee steady business growth. In the future, we will increase investment in AI applications in the finance and manufacturing sector, enhance our AI technology, such as machine learning, natural language processing and deep learning, consolidate customer relationships, as well as cultivate the new generation of AI talent for China,” He from SAS China said.

Time ripe for promoting peace in Northeast Asia

The dynamics of Northeast Asia are shifting.

The Korean Peninsula is seeing positive signs over denuclearization, with both the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea making all the right gestures. Tension has been eased and motivation for regional cooperation boosted. There cannot be a better time for promoting a regional political and security agenda, as well as economic and cultural exchange, for a peaceful and prosperous Northeast Asia.

These are the best times for Northeast Asia since the 19th century. Countries in the region were colonized by the Western powers, and later by their Asian neighbor, Japan. After World War II, Northeast Asia was caught in the Cold War and divided into two camps.

It has remained the only region still plagued by the Cold War mentality, because the United States has refused to make peace with the DPRK. To defend itself from the US, the DPRK resorted to developing nuclear weapons.

In 2018, the DPRK declared a major shift in its national policy, from the previous parallel development of nuclear weapons and economy to the current focus on the economy. This move has been viewed as an initiative to halt nuclear development and extend an olive branch to the other nations.

The DPRK’s concession on its nuclear development has led to breakthroughs in its foreign relations. Two summits between US President Donald Trump and DPRK top leader Kim Jong-un have been held, as well as three meetings between the DPRK and ROK leaders.

China-Japan relations, which had hit rock bottom following differences over the Diaoyu Islands, are back on track. The ROK and China have started to mend relations that were strained because of US deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense anti-ballistic missile system in the ROK.

Click Here: toulon rugby shop melbourne

China-DPRK relations reached a new high. The positive signs in this region and in the bilateral relations have created a favorable atmosphere for regional economic cooperation. Talks on a trilateral China-Japan-ROK free trade agreement have resumed, and Japan has voiced its willingness to engage in the Belt and Road Initiative.

All stakeholders in the region should look at the bigger picture and build a peaceful and prosperous Northeast Asia.

First, all the Northeast Asian countries should reach a consensus on cooperation. All nations should safeguard regional stability and press ahead for greater development for the long-term goal of building a peaceful and prosperous region.

Second, all parties should strengthen cooperation and push for denuclearization with one voice.

Third, the Northeast Asian countries, while handling disputes between each other, should be willing to make some compromises. All nations should learn to meet each other halfway to resolve conflicts, including territorial disputes.

Fourth, the Northeast Asian countries should accelerate development of free trade zones. The future of Northeast Asia hinges on the integration of the nations in the region.

Last, the BRI should be a cohesive and driving force for a close-knit Northeast Asia. The initiative, aligned with the development agendas of individual nations, will spur integration and cement crossborder cooperation in the region.

Sudan’s military council agrees on proposal of African-Ethiopian mediation

KHARTOUM — Sudan’s Transitional Military Council (TMC) on Sunday announced its agreement on a proposal presented by the African-Ethiopian mediation to resolve the political crisis in the country.

“The African Union (AU) proposal constitutes an excellent base for negotiations and we are ready for the talks as of today,” said Shams-Edin Kabashi, the TMC spokesman, in a statement.

He expressed hope that a comprehensive solution, involving everyone, would be reached as soon as possible under the AU umbrella.

He further said that any other efforts should be in coordination with the AU.

Kabashi expressed the TMC’s appreciation for the AU and Ethiopian envoys over their efforts to find a settlement for the political crisis in Sudan.

Earlier, the AU and Ethiopia presented a joint proposal for the TMC and the opposition Freedom and Change Alliance with the aim to end the political crisis in the country.

The proposal reportedly stipulates formation of a sovereignty council of 15 members and a cabinet of 18 ministers, besides delaying formation of the legislative council.

'Griezmann, you b*stard, get out of Camp Nou!' – Why few people at Barcelona want Atletico ace

The forward rejected the chance to join the Blaugrana last summer but is now set to belatedly arrive in Catalunya to a mix of bemusement and outrage

The animosity was evident even before kick-off.

When Antoine Griezmann’s named was called out by the stadium announcer ahead of Atletico Madrid’s must-win Liga visit to Barcelona in April, the Camp Nou crowd responded with boos.

Once the action got under way, the forward’s every touch was whistled.

Then, when he went to take a corner early in the second half, the north stand really made their feelings towards him known, unanimously bellowing: “Griezmann, you bast*rd, get out of Camp Nou!”

All we were missing was a pig’s head…

Such abuse was uncalled for, of course, yet wholly unsurprising.

The Frenchman hadn’t just spurned Barcelona’s advances the summer before, he had humiliated them in front of the watching world.

Griezmann had announced he would be staying at Atletico on a specially made television documentary named ‘The Decision’.

This was a gallingly public rejection for a club as proud as Barcelona, who had believed that Griezmann’s move to Catalunya was effectively a done deal. The Blaugrana were, thus, enraged by the perceived betrayal.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu was hit hardest by Griezmann’s U-turn; the World Cup winner was meant to be his stellar summer signing. Instead, he was left embarrassed, weakened, by the whole affair.

Bizarrely, though, Bartomeu has resurrected the transfer, with Griezmann set to belatedly arrive in Catalunya this week once the two clubs agree on the exact nature of the deal.

He will not be warmly welcomed by the majority of Barca fans. Or even the club’s board.

Make no mistake about it: Bartomeu is the sole driving force behind the deal, which has been greeted with bemusement by some fans, and outrage by others.

They, and several Barca directors, remain wary of Griezmann and this undeniably puzzling turn of events.

Griezmann, after all, had explained his decision by telling L’Equipe Magazine, “When you’re shown love at home, you don’t go elsewhere.

“[Atletico] did everything possible to make me feel good.”

And yet, according to Rojiblancos CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin, Griezmann had decided by March that he wanted to join Barca after all.

It will be, thus, fascinating to see how he is greeted not only by the supporters but also by the senior members of the squad, chief among the club captain Lionel Messi.

We know that the Argentine and the likes of Luis Suarez are desperate to see their good friend Neymar return to Barcelona this summer but their feelings on Griezmann’s imminent signing are not yet clear.

Remember, the 28-year-old admitted that an unwillingness to serve as “Messi’s lieutenant” had, perhaps “subconsciously”, been a factor in turning down Barca.

“It was very difficult,” Griezmann told Canal+. “You have Barca who wants you, who calls you, who sends messages.

“But then there is the club where you are, where you are an important player and where they build a project around you.”

There are those at Barcelona who do not want him to be a part of their project at all, believing his €120 million (£107m/$136m) transfer fee would be better used elsewhere, with Barca in need of a right-back, cover at left-back, another Frenkie de Jong-like signing to further rejuvenate the midfield and, most importantly of all, a direct Suarez replacement up front.

It also remains unclear if Ernesto Valverde is pushing for Barca to complete this deal.

He has previously described Griezmann as “a great player” but former midfield maestro Xavi has cast doubt over the coach’s role in the transfer.

“We have to see who is signing him,” the Barca legend reasoned. “Is it the sporting director? The coach? The president?

“If I were at Barca [as coach], I would ask for the signings, and if the dressing room didn’t agree with any of them I’d speak with them.

“But, in the end, I’d decide whether to sign someone. Be it Griezmann or whoever.

“However, it would be another thing altogether if [Valverde] doesn’t want him either. Then, we would have a problem.”

A very expensive and potentially divisive one at that.

It is worth pointing out that both Ivan Rakitic and Clement Lenglet have spoken in glowing terms about Griezmann.

Lenglet, of course, is one of his team-mates at international level but it was interesting to hear Rakitic try to make a subtle plea to the fans to quell their anger towards Griezmann.

“You have to congratulate him for it because he showed his love and dedication to his club,” the Croatian argued. “It was not a decision against Barca or anyone; it was in favour of Atletico.

“I congratulate him for that decision and now if I saw him here I would shake his hand and tell him that I respect him because it is not easy to make that decision, to stay then and to leave this year.

“All good players are welcome to us.”

Clearly, Griezmann will have his supporters at Camp Nou. Just maybe not as many in the stands as he would have liked.

It is going to take some time – and plenty of goals – for Barca fans to forgive the decision Griezmann made last summer.
