Qinghai’s Sanjiangyuan: Bluer water, greener mountains

After China first piloted the national park system in 2016 with the establishment of Sanjiangyuan National Park in Northwest China’s Qinghai province, environmental degradation there has been effectively curbed. The water quality has improved and the mountains have become greener.

“The biggest change, intuitively speaking, is that the mountains have become greener, the water clearer and the sky bluer,” said Tobgyal, director of the ecological environment bureau of Qinghai’s Yushu Tibetan autonomous prefecture, in an interview with journalists on June 20. Yushu is one of four major prefectures in the Sanjiangyuan area.

“The water quality of the Yangtze River in Yushu is generally maintained at Level I. In the summer, when there is more rain, it’s at Level II. Basically it’s kept between Level I and II nowadays,” he explained. China measures water quality according to five levels, with the first three grades meaning a high enough quality to be used as the source of drinking water.

Sanjiangyuan (“Three River Source”), an area of Northwest China’s Qinghai province, contains the headwaters of China’s three major rivers: the Yellow, the Yangtze and the Lancang. As the upstream region of these rivers, Sanjiangyuan has the potential to significantly impact the water quality of the entire country.

Since the late 20th century, the lakes there have shrunk as a result of human activities and overgrazing. In 2016, the State Council, China’s cabinet, approved a proposal to set up part of Sanjiangyuan as the country’s first pilot park for the national park system, which is scheduled to be inaugurated in 2020.

Fenerbahce insist Ozil signing not a possibility

The Super Lig side had been credited with an interest in the Gunners man, but have moved to quash speculation of a move

Fenerbahce have distanced themselves from reports linking them with Arsenal star Mesut Ozil, with the Turkish club adamant they cannot afford the former Germany international playmaker.

Ozil joined Arsenal from Real Madrid in 2013, and although he has been a key player for much of that time, he has also polarised opinion among the club’s supporters due to a perceived lack of work ethic when the going gets tough.

After an underwhelming season under Unai Emery last term, media speculation had suggested Arsenal are willing to offload the 30-year-old in order to lighten their wage bill, but Fenerbahce insist rumours of a loan move are wide of the mark.

A statement from the Super Lig side read: “Mesut Ozil, with his career and standing, successfully represents our country abroad (Ozil is of Turkish ancestry). He is an important value known with the identity of Fenerbahce.

“However, Fenerbahce does not have a proposal for Mesut Ozil. Under the current economic conditions, such a step is not possible for both parties.

“Our president, Ali Koc, made statements on the subject in the WinWin program held on June 20 and emphasised that this could not be realised in the short term.”

Ozil signed a new three-and-a-half-year contract in February last year, as the Gunners managed to prevent him leaving on a free transfer at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.

That was seen as a major coup, particularly given the departure of Alexis Sanchez to Manchester United in January 2018, but Ozil’s form has not recovered as expected.

Following Emery’s arrival, Ozil failed to consistently impress and he was left out of the team on numerous occasions, making only 20 Premier League starts in 2018-19.

Arsenal’s next clash sees them take in a pre-season friendly with the Colorado Rapids next Tuesday before taking part in the International Champions Cup, the Emirates Cup and the Joan Gamper Cup in Barcelona ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Gunners start the 2019-20 English top flight campaign with a trip to Newcastle United on August 11, with Europa League commitments set to begin in mid-September.

Van Dijk is an absolute beast – Bergwijn

The PSV attacker has nothing but praise for his international team-mate, having paired up with him during a successful Nations League campaign

Netherlands winger Steven Bergwijn has described Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk as “an absolute beast” and is loving playing alongside the powerful centre-back with the national team.

Bergwijn enjoyed a sublime 2018-19 campaign with PSV and was among the most valuable players in the Eredivisie last term with 14 goals and 12 assists in 33 appearances.

Only Dusan Tadic, Luuk de Jong, Hakim Ziyech and Abdenasser El Khayati were involved in more goals, and Bergwijn was rewarded for his fine performances with an international call-up in October 2018, making his senior debut in a 3-0 Nations League win over Germany.

The 21-year-old has since gone on to make seven appearances for Netherlands and was part of the squad that lost the final of the Nations League to Portugal.

Teaming up with some of the world’s best has proven to be beneficial for Bergwijn’s development as he has attracted the interest of some of the continent’s elite clubs, with Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Inter and Tottenham all among the teams believed to be keeping tabs on him.

Although Bergwijn was quick to stress he learns from all of his team-mates at international level, there is no denying that Van Dijk is his standout compatriot, being one of the best defenders in the world.

“Van Dijk is an absolute beast,” Bergwijn told Goal and Voetbalzone.

“Of course, it is good to be able to measure myself against him in training with the national team.

“But not just Virgil, they all play for massive clubs. I learn from all of them really. They all have a lot of experience and almost everyone plays for a big club.”

Van Dijk’s stellar 2018-19 campaign has led to calls for the Liverpool centre-back to become the first defender to win the Ballon d’Or since Fabio Cannavaro in 2006, although he faces stiff competition from club team-mates Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, as well as Barcelona ace Lionel Messi among others.

Liverpool’s competitive season begins on August 4 with a Community Shield clash against champions Manchester City before hosting Norwich on August 9 to kick off the 2019-20 Premier League season.

Hummels moved to Dortmund to avoid competition for playing time – Bayern boss Kovac

The Bavarian side’s boss claimed Borussia Dortmund’s new centre-back did not want to compete playing time at the club

Mats Hummels’ unwillingness to compete for his spot at Bayern Munich led to his Borussia Dortmund return, according to Niko Kovac.

Hummels returned to Dortmund for a reported €38 million (£33.8m/$42.5m) last month, ending a three-year stay at Bayern .

The defender started just over half of Bayern’s league games last season, losing his place in the starting line-up for several matches throughout the campaign after coming under fire for poor displays at the back.

He was also heavily criticised for his comments following the 3-2 loss against Dortmund in November, with the defender claiming he had blurred vision and felt sick in the build-up to the game. Hummels was later substituted in the second half.

Bayern had already agreed a move for Atletico Madrid and France defender Lucas Hernandez, who they intend to use at centre-back.

With Niklas Sule already part of the Bundesliga champions’ squad, the 30-year-old looked in for a fight for his place in the first XI next season, and Kovac says he wasn’t interested in competing for his place.

“Mats did a great job, especially in the second half of the season,” the Bayern head coach said on Tuesday.

“Like [Bayern president] Uli Hoeness said, at the end of the season Mats came to us and asked what the status quo was for the new season.

“Niklas Sule did a great job, he is a starter of the [Germany] national team and with Lucas we bought a player that we want to play centre-back. That doesn’t mean anything.

“Competition means the best player will play. In that case, Mats wanted to avoid that. We accept that and the result is that he plays for BVB now.”

Hummels is part of a long list of incoming transfers for Dormund this summer, with the club having also brought in Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard and Nico Schulz.

Having been told by Germany coach Joachim Low earlier this year that he will not feature in any future plans regarding the national team, Hummels can certainly reclaim his spot as Borussia’s first-choice centre-back next season.

Hummels won three Bundesliga titles and a DFB-Pokal during his second stint at Bayern Munich, having come through the ranks without ever really breaking through before making his way with Dortmund.

Cultural crossroads

A major exhibition examining the pivotal role played by the Tibetan Tubo regime in the Silk Road era is breaking new ground, Wang Kaihao reports in Dunhuang.

When you mention the ancient Silk Road to most people, they usually think of the Eurasian trade routes spreading from Chang’an, today’s Xi’an and the capital of Shaanxi province, toward Central Asia out through the deserts of Northwest China.

Dunhuang, Gansu province, served as a pivotal crossroads on this network of routes for over a millennium. It’s also an ideal place to gain an insight into the prosperity that those trade routes brought when you visit the nearby Mogao Grottoes. This complex of hundreds of caves features a host of exquisite statues and murals in a mix of artistic styles from a diverse range of civilizations.

A major new exhibition of cultural relics held in Dunhuang will remind visitors that the Silk Road extended to a much wider area than first believed, covering the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and all the way up to the Himalayas.

This is the story being told through the 120 or so artifacts on loan from 30 institutions and collectors worldwide at Cultural Exchange Along the Silk Road: Masterpieces of the Tubo Period (7th-9th Century), a show currently being held at the Dunhuang Caves exhibition hall at the foot of the Mogao Grottoes.

The Tibetan Tubo regime was an approximate contemporary of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and a powerful regime which united the peoples of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Africa launches world’s largest trade zone

After seven years of negotiations, African leaders met on Sunday to launch the largest free trade zone in the world, bringing together a population of approximately 1.2 billion and a combined GDP of $2.5 trillion.

Leaders attending an African Union summit in Niamey, Niger, agreed on five operational instruments to underpin the African Continental Free Trade Area. These are: regulations determining rules of origin, an online negotiating forum, a mechanism to monitor and eliminate non-tariff barriers, a digital payment system and an African Trade Observatory.

Intra-trade constituted only 17 percent of overall African exports in 2017, according to the UN Economic Commission for Africa, or UNECA. This compared with 59 percent within Asia and 69 percent within Europe.

The trade observatory will be established in 2020 by an African Union commission, the European Commission and the International Trade Center. The team is expected to accelerate the implementation of the zone by providing entrepreneurs, policymakers and other stakeholders with reliable trade data and statistics across the continent.

The trade zone has injected strong momentum into multilateralism, free trade and an open global economy, China Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Monday. It shows the strong will and determination of African countries to work together for vitalization, Geng said.

China has been the largest trade partner for Africa for the last decade, and has supported firmly the construction of the African Continental Free Trade Area, he said. The pact has far-reaching significance for Africa’s social and economic development, he said.

The trade pact was adopted on March 21, 2018 in Kigali, Rwanda. It entered into force on May 30, 30 days after having received the twenty-second instrument of ratification on April 29, 2019.

Nigeria and Benin became the 53rd and 54th signatories, leaving Eritrea as the only member of the African Union that has not signed.

“The speedy entry into force of the agreement is a source of pride for all of us,” said Moussa Faki Mahamat, chairman of the African Union Commission.

Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou said the free trade area, or FTA, will tear down borders inherited from Africa’s colonial past and ensure full continental integration.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi called for the establishment of linkages with the private sector and the business and investment communities, while also calling for the involvement of the youth who will “continue the march” toward development.

Amina Mohammed, the United Nations deputy secretary-general, noted that the African FTA is a tool to drive growth and innovation for Africa, and to create opportunities for sustainable development and realizing Agenda 2063.

The effort to unite the economies of Africa into a single zone began in January 2012 in Addis Ababa where leaders agreed to eliminate barriers to trade, services, intellectual property and investment under the free trade agreement. The pact is expected to build on existing subregional and bilateral arrangements and help create a more integrated market in the continent.

The trade pact could boost regional trade and industrialization by 50 percent, according to UNECA. Smaller countries are poised to be the biggest winners with an increase of up to 68 percent of intra-trade.

Slow trains still key for rural transport in Jilin

High-speed trains in China can usually impress people with the rapid development, but some older, slower trains are still running around the country to serve passengers with different demands.

Traveling at a speed of about 80 kilometers per hour, a pair of old-fashioned low-speed trains, painted in green, has provided services for residents in Northeast China’s Jilin province for 56 years.

Trade talks can’t solve America’s twin deficits

The trade war truce agreed upon by President Xi Jinping and President Trump at the G20 Osaka summit is very good news for the economies of both countries. Highly disruptive breaks in supply networks and in established trading patterns will be avoided. Everyone from soybean farmers to high-tech companies can breathe a tentative sigh of relief.

But it is important to realize that no possible trade agreement can reduce the overall trade deficit of the US, which stood at $879 billion in 2018, or any other nation. A country’s trade deficit is not determined by exchange rates or by tariffs. Instead, it is determined primarily by the domestic savings and investment rates within the country itself.

The US faces a coming crisis in its twin deficits – large and growing government budget deficits and trade deficits. Both are caused by a lack of savings.

I taught macroeconomics in a graduate-level executive management program for 17 years. My students, who were all experienced managers aged 40 to 50, found this hard to understand, or even believe. They would ask: “What’s the connection between savings rates and trade deficits? Explain this again.”

It’s straightforward.

Americans don’t save enough to pay for both the country’s investment and the government budget deficit.

So, the only possible source of additional funds is from foreigners.

If a country saves less than it invests, then foreigners have to make up the difference. Written as an equation: savings minus investment equals exports minus imports.

For example, the US saves less than it invests, so it must import more than it exports. That is, it must run a trade deficit. This must be financed by some country, substantially China, that saves more than it invests and thus runs a trade surplus.

Foreigners don’t send goods to America for free. They are, in fact, making a loan to the US. So, a trade must be balanced by an equal and opposite transfer of financial assets from Americans to foreigners. In practice, these assets are mostly US government debt – US Treasury bills.

Government spending is a form of consumption, so government budget deficits reduce the overall savings rate. Last month, the US Congressional Budget office released its annual long-term budget outlook projections. The conclusions, while expected, are still frightening.
