Chinese medical team to help treat another 100 Mongolian children with heart disease

ULAN BATOR – A Chinese medical team started a four-day mission here on Tuesday to examine congenital heart disease (CHD)-affected Mongolian children and screen out some 100 most urgent cases for future free treatment in China.

The mission is part of an overseas humanitarian aid program carried out by the Chinese Red Cross Foundation (CRCF) along the Belt and Road.

“At the request of the Mongolian side, we are here to launch the second phase of the humanitarian aid program,” Liu Jingjing, project manager of the CRCF, told Xinhua.

“Under this phase, we are planning to select another 100 Mongolian children with CHD and provide them with free heart surgeries in Hohhot, capital of China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and in Wuxi, an eastern Chinese city,” Liu said.

Under the first phase of the program implemented in the 2017-2018 period, a total of 100 Mongolian children aged 0-14 who were suffering from CHD had received free surgeries in Beijing and Hohhot.

“My wife and I arrived here Monday from the western Mongolian province of Govi-Altai with our six-month-old son who is suffering from congenital heart disease. Our son was diagnosed with ventricular septal defect three months ago,” Tumendemberel Purevdash, father of the boy, told Xinhua.

“I hope that my son will be selected to receive free surgery in China,” he said.

As of 2017, there were some 2,000 registered children cases of CHD in Mongolia, according to the Mongolian Red Cross Society.

Valencia keen on signing Newcastle star Ayoze Perez

The Spaniard could make the move back to his home country after the Magpies announced his compatriot Benitez would be leaving the club this month

Valencia are interested in making a move for Newcastle United forward Ayoze Perez.

According to sources close to the club, the Spaniard would be keen on a return to his native country and the Liga side are close to putting together an offer.

Perez intends to leave the Premier League club this summer, especially following the news that manager Rafael Benitez will be exiting once his contract expires at the end of June.

One barrier to any potential move would be the valuation set by Newcastle, with the quoted price of €25 million (£22m/$29m) too high for the Spanish outfit as things stand.

Valencia finished fourth in La Liga last season and qualified for the Champions League as a result, which adds even more appeal to the move for Perez, who has been at Newcastle since 2014.

The 25-year-old was the club’s top scorer across all competitions last season, finding the net 13 times in 41 appearances, with 10 of his 12 league goals coming in the second half of the season.

He has scored 48 goals in 195 appearances for Newcastle since joining the club from Tenerife, with 33 of those coming in the Premier League.

The revelation that Benitez would be leaving the north east came on Monday, as Newcastle announced that he would be departing after the two parties failed to agree terms regarding a contract extension.

A statement on the club’s official website read: “We have worked hard to extend Rafa’s contract over a significant period of time.

“However, it has not been – and will not be – possible to reach an agreement with Rafa and his representatives.”

The news came as a blow to Magpies supporters, who hold the former Liverpool manager in high regard after he led them back to the Premier League at the first attempt before consolidating their position in the top flight in the following two seasons.

The Champions League-winning boss has been linked with a money-spinning move to Chinese Super League side Dalian Yifang, who reportedly offered Benitez a contract worth £12 million ($15m) per year.

'I'm not going to the f*cking White House' – Megan Rapinoe remains defiant on national anthem stance

The USWNT progressed to the quarter-finals on Monday and are in with a chance of retaining the trophy, but the forward is dedicated to her protests

Megan Rapinoe has claimed she is “not going to the f*cking White House” if the United States win the Women’s World Cup.

Defending champions USA face hosts France in the World Cup quarter-finals in Paris on Friday after defeating Spain 2-1 in the round of 16 on Monday.

Asked if a visit to the White House would be on the cards should USA retain their title, star Rapinoe told Eight by Eight: “I’m not going to the f*cking White House.

“No. I’m not going to the White House. We’re not going to be invited.”

Rapinoe was inspired by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s protest bringing attention to police brutality and racial inequality.

The 33-year-old became the first white athlete to kneel during the national anthem before a sporting event in 2016.

Rapinoe continues to protest the national anthem in her own way at the World Cup by standing in silence while other members of the national team place their hands over their hearts and sing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner.’

United States president Donald Trump responded to her actions on Tuesday, telling The Hill when asked if Rapinoe should protest during the national anthem: “No. I don’t think so.”

Trump went on to say he loves watching women’s soccer, adding: “They’re really talented.”

The US president has been highly critical of athletes who decide to protest during the national anthem however, describing it as a “a total disrespect of our heritage” in 2017.

Rapinoe’s Eight by Eight interview also touched on the expectations that drive the team to chase another world title.

USA had their toughest match of the World Cup on Monday when Spain scored the first goal of the tournament against the reigning champions.

Rapinoe scored USA’s only goals in that match as the international powerhouse prevailed 2-1 to keep their hopes of retaining the trophy alive.

“We have a great burden of expectation, but I think that also brings out the best in you and we just except to win every single game,” she said.

“So if we’re down two-nil with 10 minutes left, we expect to win that game. We’ve been in those situations before and it’s just sort of ingrained in us.”

'I don't want to be an embarrassment' – Thiago Silva opens up on retirement plans

The defender, 34, revealed he will call time on his playing career when he feels like he is becoming a hindrance

Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain defender Thiago Silva said he is taking inspiration from Zinedine Zidane and plans to retire before he becomes “embarrassing”.

Thiago Silva, who made 39 appearances across all competitions for Ligue 1 champions PSG last season, has played in all three of his country’s Copa America games so far.

Retirement does not appear to be imminent, but Silva believes Zidane’s decision to hang up his boots after the 2006 World Cup at the age of 34 is a prime example of going out at the very top of the game.

“I hope I can make the decision to give up before my legs give up on me,” the 34-year-old defender told PSG’s official magazine.

“I do not want to be embarrassing on the field and feel one day that I’m not at my best and players can beat me easily in duels.

“I am happy that my career has been successful and I want to finish at the highest level possible.

“I’m a fan of how Zinedine Zidane ended his career, right after a World Cup. At some point, I will also have to make that decision to stop.”

Unlike Zidane – who is head coach at Real Madrid – Silva believes he would be better suited to an assistant coaching role.

“I do not see myself as a leader; I want to be on the pitch, maybe as a coach or as an assistant,” he explained.

“I will watch as many matches as possible. I want to know the levels of different football schools, whether French, Dutch or Italian, whether defensive or offensive.

“By relying on my experience as a player, I hope to one day perform as a coach.”

Silva will expect to be in the starting line-up when Brazil’s Copa America campaign continues against Paraguay in the quarter-finals on Friday.

Brazil finished top of Group A having won two and drawn one of their opening three matches, while Paraguay finished third in Group B with two draws and a loss across their three matches.

'We’re going to have to figure it out' – Berhalter facing USMNT rotation decision ahead of group finale

The USA boss has started the same lineup for two straight Gold Cup matches, but will he stand pat once again in the Group D decider vs. Panama?

To rotate or not to rotate, that is the question.

At least it’s the question Gregg Berhalter is being left to ponder as he prepares the U.S. national team for its Gold Cup group finale against Panama in a match-up of unbeaten teams, with the winner securing first place in the group heading into the knockout rounds.

The USMNT has used the same starting lineup for its two group stage victories, comfortable romps against Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago, and Berhalter hasn’t come out and said he would make lineup changes for Wednesday’s match against Panama, even though squad rotation seems inevitable for the Americans.

Is it Berhalter simply playing coy, or could the first-year coach actually be wrestling with the decision he admitted on Saturday he hasn’t had to make before as a head coach.

“That’s a good question, and to be honest I don’t have experience with that,” Berhalter admitted when asked whether he would rotate some players. “It’s the first time we’re going through it so we’re going to have to figure it out. We know that the tournament is a lot of games in a short period of time. So there’s going to have to be some balancing. Part of it was getting some guys off today to get them some rest. That’s going to be an interesting problem that we’re going to have to solve.”

Berhalter will have to weigh the benefits of keeping the same starting lineup together against the drawbacks of putting too much wear on his first-choice group ahead of the knockout rounds. After a pair of victories by a combined margin of 10-0, it isn’t as if there are any current starters who have played themselves out of a starting role, and Berhalter also sees a growing understanding within the group he will be tempted to keep developing.

“The guys feel good right now,” Berhalter said. “Part of us analyzing the game against Guyana saying ‘Okay, we need to take another step as a group. We need to keep progressing as a group’. It made more sense to play the same lineup. So we looked at who performed well in their position, who was able to keep their spot. And we found that everyone was able to keep their spot.

“In this case you know as we go into the Panama game the guys are feeling good right now. For us it’s assessing where everyone is and then making the appropriate decisions.”

Among the lineup decisions Berhalter could make, starting Jozy Altidore in place of Gyasi Zardes is a definite possibility. Altidore impressed off the bench against Trinidad and Tobago, but that match also saw Zardes score two goals in a strong performance. Jordan Morris is another good candidate to start, after making a major impact off the bench against Trinidad and Tobago. He could replace Tyler Boyd, though Boyd has looked sharp as a starter.

Defensively, Berhalter has talked up the quality of the central defenders on his roster, and he could choose to give Matt Miazga and Omar Gonzalez a start against a Panama side that doesn’t boast the strongest forwards.

With a place in the quarterfinals already secured, the United States will be looking to maintain the momentum generated from its first two group-stage victories. Beating Panama would also pit the Americans against the second-place finisher in Group C, which will be set on Tuesday night. A stumble against Panama could throw the USMNT into a tough quarterfinal clash against Jamaica, the same Jamaica side that defeated the United States in a pre-Gold Cup friendly on June 5.

Panama won’t make things easy. It will be a much different Canaleros side than the one beaten by the United States in a 3-0 romp in January. Veterans Roman Torres, Alberto Quintero, Harold Cummings and Michael Murillo will provide the stiffest challenge to date for the Americans at the Gold Cup, which could be another reason for Berhalter to stick with the same starting lineup, though there is also a good chance Panama rotates some players as well.

If Berhalter does stick with the same starting lineup, it won’t be in order to try and avoid Jamaica, but more likely an attempt to get his first-choice group into better balance after players arrived at the Gold Cup in varying places in their seasons. Some players were coming off short vacations after European seasons, some were in the middle of their MLS season grinds, while others were working their way back from injuries.

Other top teams in the tournament have incorporated squad rotation into their lineup decisions, such as Mexico, which trotted out a mostly-reserve side in a 3-2 win against Martinique in El Tri’s group finale, and Canada, which has used a variety of lineups.

Whether Berhalter makes wholesale changes, stands pat, or finds a middle ground, he and the USMNT head into the group finale with plenty of options, and surging confidence after some impressive victories that have provided a much-needed morale boost.

“This is a team that, from the beginning I think we’ve all bought into this idea of we’re a collective, we’re a team, we’re a unit, and no matter who’s playing, who’s on the bench, we’re all rooting for one another,” defender Walker Zimmerman said. “We’re all helping each other in any way that we can and so it’s everyone’s job to be ready from the first minute whether they’re starting or not.

“So far the mentality has been great. In training and games the guys who have come in off the bench, guys who have started, guys who haven’t gotten a chance yet, the mentality has been phenomenal and it’s going to take that same committed effort and mentality to move along in this thing.”

Lukaku agent confirms Inter interest in Man Utd striker

The Belgium international is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer with the Serie A outfit the favourites to sign him

Romelu Lukaku’s agent has confirmed that Inter are trying to sign the Manchester United striker this summer.

Lukaku has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer as it appears his two-year stay with the Red Devils is nearing its end.

The Belgium international has already hinted that Inter could be his landing spot, having expressed his opinion that newly-hired Antonio Conte is the best manager in the world.

He has also been urged to move by Belgium boss Roberto Martinez, who said that it “is clear that he has to leave Manchester United” while adding that a move was in the best interest of both parties.

In the wake of those statements, Lukaku’s agent Federico Pastorello was spotted meeting Inter executives at the club’s offices in Milan on Tuesday afternoon.

Pastorello says that the meeting’s primary talking point was to discuss the transfer of one of his other clients, Edoardo Vergani, who is preparing to join Sassuolo.

But the agent also admitted that a potential move to Inter is still on the cards for Lukaku while confirming that Nerazzurri are interested.

“We talked about [Edoardo] Vergani because his is a more urgent situation,” Pastorello told FC Inter News.

“In the next few days, we’ll talk about the rest.

“Lukaku is a dream, a difficult one to make happen as such, but I believe nothing is impossible.”

He added: “Yes [Inter are trying to sign Lukaku[. He’s publicly expressed his plans and desires. We’ll see what happens.”

Lukaku scored 15 goals in 45 appearances for Manchester United in 2018-19, having scored 27 in 51 the previous campaign.

However, the former Chelsea forward has been the target of heavy criticism despite his statistics being up there with the very best in the Premier League.

Manchester United finished sixth in the Premier League this season, having also reached the Champions League quarter-finals by topping Paris Saint-Germain in stunning fashion in the last 16.

Meanwhile Inter sealed Champions League football for next season by finishing fourth in Serie A, with a win over Empoli on the final day seeing them edge rivals AC Milan to that spot.

Foreign equipment makers reap rewards in Chinese market

European telecom equipment makers Ericsson and Nokia are winning key 5G contracts in China, a move that analysts said showcases the country’s open attitude to all international players when rolling out the superfast technology.

The news came after China Mobile, the world’s largest telecom operator by mobile subscribers, announced it has awarded its first round of 5G network equipment contracts in 2019, which are worth around $2 billion.

China Mobile procured 153 units of MME (mobility management entity) telecom equipment from Sweden company Ericsson, which accounts for 34 percent of the company’s procurements. Nokia provided 56 units, accounting for 12 percent.

When it comes to SAE (system architecture evolution) telecom equipment, Ericsson provided 231 units, accounting for 34 percent of China Mobile’s business, with Nokia offering 60 units, equivalent to around 9 percent of the overall procurements.

The move came as China Mobile accelerates steps to construct the fifth-generation wireless technology shortly after it won a 5G commercial license. The company aims to offer 5G commercial services in 40 cities by September.

The significant share of Ericsson and Nokia in China Mobile’s procurement plans highlights that China delivers its promises of sticking to international cooperation, analysts said.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the country’s top industry regulator, said earlier this month that it welcomes foreign enterprises to actively participate in China’s 5G network construction and application promotion.

Markus Borchert, president of Nokia China, said in a reply to China Daily: “The cooperation with multinational companies is highly recognized by the Chinese government, which makes us more confident in the healthy, steady and sustainable development of China’s 5G industry.”

His comments were echoed by Lyu Tingjie, a professor at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. Lyu said China welcomes competition in 5G roll-out, as it is aware that competition from foreign companies helps lower costs.

“That contrasts the attitude of the US government, which banned Chinese companies from its 5G network deployment,” Lyu said, adding that China’s sprawling multi-billion-dollar telecom market will bring big opportunities to foreign companies.

China granted four licenses to telecom carriers on June 6, marking that the country has officially kicked off the 5G era. It also marked an accelerated push by China to apply 5G, for its previous plan was to commercialize the technology in 2020.

A string of foreign companies, including Nokia, Ericsson, Qualcomm and Intel, have already participated in three phases of technical tests organized by China to get their 5G products and solutions ready for commercial use in the country.

Guangzhou employs robot to rehab drug addicts

GUANGZHOU – The southern Chinese city of Guangzhou has employed a talking robot to aid the rehabilitation of substance users through human-machine counseling.

While robots elsewhere are made to blur the line between humans and machines, the robot in the capital of Guangdong province boasts a special appeal to addicts who find it embarrassing to talk to human community workers.

The “Tianche No. E,” which looks like a cubical Baymax, on Saturday started its tenure at a community rehab center in Nansha District.

Aided by artificial intelligence algorithms and big data, the machine offers individual counseling, psychological evaluation and a reminder of urine tests.

It is co-developed by the district’s narcotics control commission and a Chinese tech firm to streamline the rehab service, according to the commission.

After swiping an ID card and undergoing facial recognition, a user can start counseling, an important part of the follow-up care after drug addiction treatment, with the robot, which generates a report afterward.

“Traditional counseling may have problems like repetitive questioning, complicated process of archiving and a lack of analysis,” said Yang Qingqiu, deputy commander of the district anti-drug brigade, who hailed the “Tianche No. E” for reducing 80 percent of their paperwork.

Meanwhile, a former drug addict said that he felt better to talk with the robot on questions that he found it hard to answer when facing officials and community workers.

The commission said they have plans to utilize the same robot model at more community rehab centers in the district.
