Nation to ‘fight at all costs’ for unification

If anyone tries to split Taiwan from China, the Chinese military has no choice but to fight at all costs for national unity, State Councilor and Defense Minister General Wei Fenghe said on Sunday in Singapore, while elaborating on China’s stance on the Taiwan question.

“The Taiwan question bears on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Not a single country in the world would tolerate secession,” Wei said in a speech during a Shangri-La Dialogue defense forum hosted by the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

He cited the Civil War in the United States as an example, saying that American friends told him that Abraham Lincoln was the greatest US president because he led the country to victory in the Civil War and prevented the secession of states from the nation.

“The US is indivisible – so is China. China must be and will be reunified. There is no excuse not to do so,” he said.

“If anyone tries to split Taiwan from China, the Chinese military has no choice but to fight at all costs for national unity,” Wei emphasized.

Wei warned the Democratic Progressive Party, the ruling party in Taiwan, and the external forces that interfere in the Taiwan question.

“No attempts to split China will succeed. Foreign intervention in the Taiwan question is doomed to failure,” he said.

Wei warned that any underestimation of the People’s Liberation Army’s resolve and will is extremely dangerous.

“We will strive for the prospects of peaceful reunification with the utmost sincerity and greatest efforts, but we make no promise to renounce the use of force. Safeguarding national unity is a sacred duty of the PLA,” he said.

Lieutenant General He Lei, former vice-president of the PLA Academy of Military Science, said the Taiwan question is related to China’s core interests, the political foundation for China-US bilateral relations and a “red line for China”.

He said that before 2016 the Taiwan question was seldom raised during the dialogue since the event mostly focuses on global security issues. But in recent years, Pentagon chiefs have highlighted US commitment to the island during their plenary speeches and were praised by Taiwan secessionists.

“The PLA will not tolerate anyone using any methods to separate any part of Chinese territory,” He said. “The PLA has the confidence, capability and methods to adamantly safeguard national sovereignty, security and developmental interests.”

Chile culture park set for Shanghai

Chile plans to launch an immersive culture park in Hainan to showcase its original produce and introduce Chinese visitors to the South American country’s rich culture and stunning scenery.

The Chile Experience park will be developed by Wines of Chile and the Shanghai-based Lam International, Chilean President Sebastian Pinera announced in Beijing in late April.

“The Chile Experience will bring a taste of Chile to our Chinese friends by not only showcasing Chilean wines, food, and other authentic products from Chile, but will also feature immersive high-tech attractions that will connect our guests with the culture of Chile,” says Wines of Chile representative Julio Alonso at a Chilean wine road show in Beijing on April 25.

The project aims to strengthen the friendship between the peoples of Chile and China by offering a wide array of Chilean products, cultural offerings and investment opportunities.

“The Chile Experience truly demonstrates the Belt and Road spirit,” says Lam Yau Sun, a senior official with the Shanghai company.

“It will be Chile’s home away from home and we hope our project will encourage more Chinese to visit Chile and vice versa for generations to come,” Lam says.

To ensure a high-quality immersive experience, the Los Angeles-headquartered theme park development specialists Thinkwell Group has been invited to bring fresh ideas to life.

“We are elated to be a part of this team,” says Kelly Ryner, president of Thinkwell Asia.

“Chile and its culture have so many destinations to choose from that it will be a wonderful place to visit for the whole family,” Ryner says.

The “Chilean Adventure” will capture the vast landscapes and distinctive customs of Chile through four distinct zones. Each zone will carry an individual theme and offer different experiences, including wining and dining and recreation facilities, all unique to the different regions of Chile, according to the park developers.

The first zone will offer visitors a taste of Santiago and Valparaiso, from the 19th-century European architecture of the capital to the vibrantly colored buildings of the seaport city, where music and dance performances will take place around a lively marketplace. Virtual reality experiences will let travelers cycle down the steep streets of Valparaiso on mountain bikes. This zone will also serve as a green gateway to the wine regions of central Chile.

The second zone will showcase the Atacama Desert, the most extreme landscape in Chile. Visitors will be able to take in the arid yet beautiful desert vistas and enjoy one of the clearest skies on the planet. The “Fly Through Chile” experience will offer visitors the chance to feel what it is like to fly over the vast landscapes of the country.

The third zone will present a slice of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and the Robinson Crusoe islands. It aims to set free the imagination of adventurers of all ages by leading them through an aquarium and a children’s play zone.

The final zone will offer a chance for visitors to experience the cold regions of Chilean Patagonia and Antarctica. It is tailored to those harboring an adventurous spirit, and visitors will experience thrilling roller-coaster rides and a boating experiences. Travelers might also get to play in the snow.

The culture park project was announced in tandem with a sister project in Hainan province, and is seen as a part of wider efforts by Chile to promote its wine in China.

The country aims to tap into the high-end Chinese wine market, which has shown an increasing demand for wines made from Chilean grape varieties in recent years, road show officials said.

In 2018, China imported 74.67 million liters of Chilean wine with an estimated value of $723.2 million, according to Wines of Chile.

The average price of a bottle of Chilean wine rose across the board last year, with prices of midrange and high-end wine climbing by about 15 percent year-on-year.

Chile currently ranks as China’s third-largest wine importer after France and Austria.

The continuously strong demand for Chilean wine has bolstered Chile’s confidence in further tapping into the potential of the Chinese market.

Wines of Chile have held many promotional events in China thanks to the thriving economic and cultural atmosphere brought about by the Belt and Road Initiative.

The Chilean wine association intends to keep making inroads into the wine market in second-and third-tier Chinese cities, where overall wine consumption has been on the rise in recent years.

The association has also signed a memorandum with China’s leading liquor maker Kweichow Moutai earlier to promote each other’s products in their home countries.

Organizers have planned for the Chilean wine road show to travel to Suzhou, Jiangsu province, before moving to Fuzhou, Fujian province’s capital, and then to Kunming, Yunnan province’s capital.

Many events planned nationwide to mark Cultural and Natural Heritage Day

Cultural events will be held on June 8 all over China to celebrate Cultural and Natural Heritage Day, according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

In terms of cultural heritage, Yan’an, a city in northern Shaanxi province which was the hub for Communist revolutionary movement in China from the mid-1930s to 1940s, will become the homeground for this year’s celebration.

Protection of revolutionary-themed cultural heritage sites is this year’s theme.

A symposium of more than 100 delegates on the protection of such sites will be held in Yan’an.

And quiz shows, stage drama performances, fine art exhibitions, will be held, to promote public consciousness of cultural heritage protection.

Tianjin – not just a port but high-tech HQ

My earliest memories of Tianjin are of a laid-back major port city in northern China famous for its Europeanstyled neighborhoods and “crosstalk” (a traditional Chinese performing art featuring two artistes having a comedic dialogue).

In May 2018, however, I had to update those memories urgently, drastically, after I attended the 2nd World Intelligence Congress in the city. Tianjin is truly the capital of China’s high-tech industry.

The municipality applies a wide range of intelligent technologies in not only business but the emerging e-governance sector, and civil services. The beneficiaries of this approach are both the local government and the residents.

For instance, Chinese key server maker Inspur Group has worked with the Tianjin municipal government to build a healthcare big data platform and launch an app called Health Tianjin.

During this year’s 3rd WIC, Inspur unveiled a new electronic heath card. In the near future, Tianjin residents can log in to Health Tianjin app to apply for an electronic health card and get a unique QR code to make an appointment to see a doctor and pay the bills. By the end of this year, the new electronic card system will cover all public Class 3 hospitals in Tianjin.

Inspur has also signed a strategic partnership with Tianjin, to set up an AI research institute in the city, aiming to attract global talents.

“We will step up our efforts to develop the AI sector in Tianjin, and will focus on fields including cloud operating systems and cloud database,” said Sun Pishu, chairman of Inspur.

Tianjin is accelerating the push for high-quality development, aiming to build a big intelligent industrial innovation system and foster a big intelligent industrial cluster,” said Cao Xiaohong, vice-mayor of Tianjin. “Tianjin is closely tied to the smart technologies sector through the annual World Intelligence Congress and will look to be a part of the new round of technological revolution and industrial transformation.”

According to Cao, the annual WIC, a global conference on leading technologies, will help further pursue the industrial upgrade and transformation as well as high-quality economic and social development.

The recent years have witnessed positive outcomes for Tianjin’s efforts to pursue high-quality development, and the city will continue to accelerate the push to boost productivity and inject new impetus into its economic growth, Cao said.

Value-added industrial output in Tianjin rose 4.8 percent year-on-year to 216 billion yuan ($31 billion) in the first quarter this year, 2.2 percentage points higher than the number last year. Value-added equipment manufacturing output surged 6.4 percent year-on-year, accounting for 33.1 percent of the city’s total industrial output.

Tianjin is also accelerating the push for becoming a high-tech hub, rolling out a series of supportive policies to develop the booming artificial intelligence technologies.

In December last year, Tianjin rolled out a three-year plan to boost the innovative development of seven AI-related industrial chains, including: the independent and controllable information system, smart security, big data, advanced communications, intelligent connected vehicles, industrial robots and intelligent terminals.

Last May, Tianjin set up a 100 billion yuan fund to invest in AI technologies, focusing on emerging fields including robots, smart software and hardware as well as intelligent vehicles.

Bernardeschi backs Sarri to take over at Juventus

The midfielder believes the Chelsea boss fits the profile as the next manager in Turin, though he says he doesn’t know who will take over the club

Federico Bernardeschi believes that Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri would be a good fit at Juventus, but is confident that no matter who the club chooses to hire they will bring great value to the side.

The Serie A champions are looking for a new boss after parting ways with Massimiliano Allegri at the end of another title winning campaign in Italy.

Goal understands that Sarri is the frontrunner for the Juventus job and, having reached an agreement with the Italian giants, has asked for his release from Chelsea.

And Bernardeschi thinks the 60-year-old would be a good fit for his club moving forward.

”I don’t express myself, we have a club with great decision makers, therefore whoever arrives means that they’ll be at the top and bring something more for each player,” he told reporters.

“As a player I can say that Sarri is a valid profile to me, but I don’t know if he will be the next manager.”

The midfielder also believes that departing boss Allegri, linked with a move to replace Sarri at Chelsea, should be celebrated for the success he brought to the club.

“He will be celebrated as deserved, because he won a lot and that isn’t easy,” he said. “He has his ideas that led Juventus to many successes.”

Bernardeschi is on international duty with Italy at the moment, with the side preparing for a pair of Euro 2020 qualifying matches next week.

Italy lead Group I with two wins from two games and will take on second-placed Greece and third-placed Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 8 and June 11 respectively.

And the Juve star is excited to see the progress made by the side as he feels they are rounding nicely into form.

“It’s an extraordinary group, made of many young talents,” he said. “We’re all in agreement to say that this is the Italy we wanted, made also of men and it’s very important. Mancini worked a lot on this.”

One young player who has caught the eye for both Italy and Juve is Moise Kean, with his club and international team-mate hoping the 19-year-old is given time to grow as a player before being judged.

“He needs to grow without pressure and responsibility, he needs to still make mistakes to find his balance and work in the right way,” Bernardeschi said of the youngster.

“It would be wrong to give him a label.”

Liverpool celebrate Champions League victory with open-top bus parade

The Reds stars travelled through the city on a double-decker bus to toast their latest achievement with the club’s supporters

Liverpool celebrated their Champions League success with thousands of fans as they embarked on a parade through the city’s streets on Sunday.

The Merseyside outfit claimed the Champions League title the previous night after goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi secured a 2-0 win over Tottenham in the final in Madrid.

Winning the European crown for the first time in 14 years sent their supporters into jubilant celebrations as they welcomes the squad home.

They travelled down the streets of Liverpool in an open-top bus with the players waving the trophy from the top deck, while coach Jurgen Klopp sat on the corner of the bus with a beer between his legs counting Liverpool’s six European titles in his hands with a smile.

Meanwhile, Georginio Wijnaldum avoided a scare when he dropped his phone while recording a video of the fans. He was relieved to get it back and see that it had survived despite the big drop.

The club’s owner John Henry was also there, alongside chairman Tom Werner, to take in the celebration of their first Champions League success since Fenway Sports Group took over the club nine years ago.

Liverpool completed the success just a year after last reaching the final, when they lost 3-1 to Real Madrid.

This year’s journey to the final began with a close finish in the group stage as the Anfield side finished second behind Paris Saint-Germain and level on points with Napoli, edging through to the knockout stage because of their superior goal record.

A 3-1 win at Bayern Munich in the second-leg of their last-16 tie set up a quarter-final clash with Porto, which Klopp’s men sailed through 6-1 on aggregate.

They looked set to crash out after suffering a 3-0 hammering away to Barcelona in the semi-final first leg, but they recovered in incredible fashion by scoring four at Anfield the following week.

But their victory against Spurs in Saturday’s decider did not come without controversy, as the referee’s decision to give a penalty for a Moussa Sissoko handball just a minute into the match created much debate among football fans.

Origi, though, would seal the game late on, sparking wild celebrations in Madrid and back home in Liverpool, where the party continued on Sunday.

'Next year we go for the Premier League & Champions League double!' – Mane buzzing after Liverpool win

The Reds narrowly missed out on a league title this term but their Senegalese striker thinks their win in Madrid is the start of something special

Sadio Mane has called on Liverpool to win the Premier League and Champions League in 2019-20 following the club’s European victory against Tottenham on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side missed out on becoming English champions by just one point this year, despite amassing an impressive 97 points over the course of the season.

But they made amends for last year’s disappointment in Kiev when they finished runners-up to Real Madrid in the Champions League, beating Spurs 2-0 to bring the trophy back to Liverpool for the sixth time.

“I think it’s the start of something special, like everybody mentioned, because last year we were close and this season we won it,” Mane said after the memorable night in Madrid.

“So, next year [we go] for the league and Champions League. We know it will not be easy but we are Liverpool, we are strong, we will do everything and we still have a young team. We will keep learning and working hard to get more trophies.”

Asked if the win felt extra rewarding after last year’s final defeat, Mane said: “I think so. I think last year was not easy. It was really, really hard but that’s football.

“That makes people love football. We have learned a lot this year, so we’re just really happy.

“The lessons we learned came in many ways, in many things. We’ve got more experience and at the same time we’re used to playing this type of game. It made it easier today.”

Liverpool’s players and staff showed plenty of emotion after the final whistle.

Jordan Henderson was seen crying and hugging his dad, who revealed the Reds’ captain had promised him as a 10-year-old he would play in a Champions League final.

“To be honest I think the dream became true,” Mane continued. “I don’t even know how happy I am, I could not believe until now.

“I think I’m still dreaming! But at the end of the day I won, so very happy, very proud.

“I don’t have the words to describe how happy I am. Of course, it’s one of the best [nights of my life].

“It was not easy, it was a long way, but at the end of the day we did it together so really happy and really proud.”

Carragher would rather lose Van Dijk than 'special' Klopp

The defender was man of the match in the Champions League final and won PFA Player of the Year, but Carragher thinks his coach is the key to success

Liverpool would be better off losing star defender Virgil van Dijk than manager Jurgen Klopp, according to Reds legend Jamie Carragher, who hopes the ‘special’ coach stays for 17 years.

The German won his first trophy in charge of the Merseyside club on Saturday night, engineering a 2-0 victory over Tottenham to claim the Champions League title in Madird.

And Klopp came so close to bringing a first ever Premier League trophy to Anfield this season, only missing out on top spot by one point after amassing an incredible 97 points.

Van Dijk played a key role in both competitions and earned the PFA Player of the Year award for his performances in the English top flight as well as being named man of the match in the European final against Spurs.

But Carragher still does not think the Dutch defender is as important to Liverpool as Klopp.

“I think he [Klopp] is the number one at the club,” Carragher told Sky Sports . “He’s the manager of course, but what I mean is he is the most important figure.

“If you asked me would I rather lose Van Dijk or the manager, I’d say Van Dijk. I think he is a special manager.

“I don’t know what his contract situation is but give him a new one and hopefully now, he can push on. He’s got that monkey off his back with that first big trophy, first time he’s won the Champions League after so many finals without a win.

“Hopefully for him and that set of players, it’s not just a one-off. He’s always done seven years at his clubs so in 2022, it might be seven years. Let’s try and make it 17!”

Klopp had lost six finals in a row before the win on Saturday, a run that spanned his time back to his time in charge of Borussia Dortmund and included two Champions League defeats.

The German’s Dortmund side lost to Bayern Munich in 2013 and then he led Liverpool to a runners-up spot last year after coming off second best against Real Madrid in Kiev.

And Klopp will surely be targeting a league title again next year after revealing he had a phone call with City’s Pep Guardiola after picking up the European trophy.
