Bard reboot opens theater gala

Tadashi Suzuki returns to the Chinese capital with his radical reworking of the Shakespearean classic King Lear to launch this year’s NCPA International Theatre Festival, Chen Nan reports.

It was a cold and snowy night 35 years ago when the legendary Japanese theater director Tadashi Suzuki premiered his version of the classic Shakespearean tragedy King Lear, performed by actors on an outdoor stage in the mountains of Toyama prefecture on Japan’s Honshu island.

Among the audience that night in the village where the director and his Suzuki Company of Toga are based were theater critics from the United States and Europe, who were so impressed by the play that they later took it to the West.

In 1988, the play toured the US for six months, which saw American actors stage more than 100 shows before later opening at the Moscow Art Theatre featuring an all-male Russian cast.

Deschamps defends Mbappe after lacklustre showing against Turkey

The PSG man was below his usual standard on Saturday, but he was no worse than his French team-mates insists the World Cup-winning coach

Didier Deschamps has defended Kylian Mbappe following intense criticism in the wake of France’s shock 2-0 defeat to Turkey, and has claimed he was just one of 10 players who underperformed.

Goals from Kaan Ayhan and Cengiz Under proved to be the difference between the sides on Saturday, as the world champions were defeated in Konya and surrendered top spot in Euro 2020 qualifying Group H to their hosts.

However, of all France player, Mbappe has received the most flak following the defeat, with the Paris Saint-Germain star losing possession 22 times – the most in a single game for his country – and generally struggling against Hasan Ali Kaldirim.

France will be expected to bounce back emphatically away to Andorra on Tuesday and Mbappe will be under pressure to provide a response, should he play.

But Deschamps insists the striker has nothing more to prove than any of the other 10 outfield players, convinced only goalkeeper Hugo Lloris came out of the debacle with his reputation intact.

“Apart from Hugo Lloris, who was at his level in Turkey, all the others were below what they have to do,” Deschamps told reporters on Monday.

“You [the media] target Kylian most, but I look from a collective point of view. He was below his best, he had less mobility.

“In his individual risk-taking, which is part of his qualities, he did not have the success he usually has, and he did not always receive the ball in the best positions.

“But I’m not going to have any special treatment for Kylian. I talk to him as I talk to the other players, and he and the others depend on a collective.”

Deschamps accepts some of his players could be suffering from fatigue given the busy 12 months they have had.

“It is [the case] for all French players who have been to the World Cup,” he said. “The holidays have been cut short, the calendars are hyper-charged and there is an extension [to the season].

“But it’s valid for other nations. When we go after a competition, the season after is like that. The holidays will do them good, and they need them.

“We have one last important collective effort to make before they switch to the rest they need.”

‘For me he’s the best ever’ – Neves hails Ronaldo after Nations League success

The Juve man won his second major honour with Portugal on Sunday, further helping to establish his reputation as one of football’s legends

Portugal midfielder Ruben Neves has hailed his international team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo as the greatest player of all time, after the Juventus man guided his country to Nations League success on Sunday night.

The reigning European champions emerged victorious from the four-team tournament last week after beating the Netherlands 1-0 in the showpiece final, thanks to Goncalo Guedes’ second-half strike.

While Ronaldo gave more of a selfless performance against the Dutch, he put in another individual masterclass in the semi-final, when his hat-trick helped Portugal beat Switzerland 3-1.

It means that with Ronaldo at the helm Portugal have won two major international honours in three years – their only major honours to date.

Often exonerated for his club performances, Ronaldo’s success for his country will undoubtedly help cement his status as one of the planet’s best ever players, perhaps even more so than Lionel Messi, who is yet to win any major silverware on the international stage.

For that reason, Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves feels the former Manchester United and Real Madrid attacker is the world’s greatest ever player.

“Cristiano is the best,” he said, as quoted by the Express and Star. “He showed that in the semi-finals and again. We are lucky to have him in our team.”

Asked whether he thought Ronaldo was the best of all time, Neves responded: “Of course, yes. For me, he’s the best ever, and I’m a really lucky guy to play with him.”

As well as Ronaldo’s international triumphs, his list of accolades include five Champions League winners’ medals and domestic titles in Spain, England and Italy.

However, it is the Portuguese star’s individual success which set him apart from the world’s other premier players – namely the five Ballon d’Ors he has claimed.

Along with Messi, no one was won the award more times than the Juve no.7 and after his success with Portugal there have been suggestions that Ronaldo could well win the trophy again for a record-breaking sixth time.

However, the 34-year-old failed to be drawn on the subject when asked after Portugal’s triumph over the Netherlands.

Next up for Ronaldo is a return to club action with Juventus. However, with the Italian season not set to start until the end of August, he can look forward to a few weeks off before returning to pre-season training.

Real Madrid move for Mendy confirmed by France coach Deschamps

The France boss confirmed on Monday that one of his brightest talents is set to move to Los Blancos this summer

France manager Didier Deschamps has confirmed Ferland Mendy will join Real Madrid this summer.

The Lyon man has been heavily linked with a move to the Spanish capital after Los Blancos’ poor showing in 2018/19 and, speaking at to the press on Monday, Deschamps said that a €50 million (£45m/$57m) transfer has been agreed between the Ligue 1 club and Real.

“Ferland has a spectacular growth, he was in Ligue 2 two years ago and he will be at Real Madrid [next year],” said the World Cup-winning coach.

“He has both feet, with us he has been good every time he had to play.”

There is yet no announcement from either Lyon or Real regarding the transfer, but should Mendy join the side from the Spanish capital, he will become their third signing this summer, following the transfers of Luka Jovic and Eden Hazard last week.

If the deal does indeed take place, it will mark the end of an incredible two years for the defender, who in the 2016/17 second was playing second-tier football for Le Havre.

However, he has has excelled since his 2017 move to Lyon – for an estimated €6 million (£5m) – and has been voted in the Ligue 1 Team of the Year in both seasons he has played in the division.

His superb showings in recent years mean he has established himself as one of the best young left-backs in world football, although the 24-year-old can also operate in midfield.

As well as excelling at club level, Mendy has become a vital part of Deschamps’ France squad, despite competing with the likes of Benjamin Mendy, Lucas Digne and Lucas Hernandez for a left-back berth.

Mendy played in Saturday’s shock 2-0 defeat to Turkey in their Euro 2020 qualification group and is expected to feature against Andorra on Tuesday.

He may also not be the only French international destined for Madrid, with speculation still swirling that Paul Pogba is set to join Zinedine Zidane’s side.

So too, has international team-mate Kylian Mbappe, while Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen and Paris Saint-Germain star Neymar hve also been linked with a move back to La Liga.

UK leadership hopefuls launch campaigns to take control of Brexit

LONDON – Several of the leading candidates to become Britain’s next prime minister and take on the challenge of delivering Brexit will launch their leadership campaigns on Monday, as the crowded contest officially begins.

Britain is seeking a new leader after Theresa May announced she would resign, having failed to deliver Brexit on schedule in March and seen her authority over a divided parliament evaporate after three heavy defeats in votes to approve her exit deal.

May’s successor will inherit Britain’s deepest political crisis in decades over how, when and whether it should leave the EU. The next leader’s choices will affect the country’s future role on the world stage and prosperity for generations to come.

Nominations for the contest will open on Monday, with each of the 11 hopeful needing to secure at least eight backers among the Conservatives’ 300-plus elected lawmakers. Voting later in the week will whittle the field down further.

While candidates are keen to set out policies beyond Brexit, leaving the European Union is set to dominate the agenda for a series of campaign launches due on Monday from contenders representing a wide spectrum of views.

Dominic Raab, one of the most hardline Brexit advocates who says he would rather leave without a deal than delay the exit beyond its current date of Oct 31, will launch under the banner of “Building a Fairer Britain”.

At the other end of the Brexit spectrum, Matt Hancock, who has ruled out leaving without a deal, will promise Britain “a fresh start” with a pro-business platform aimed at reaching new, younger voters.

Other launches are also expected on Monday and Tuesday.

Spain: Unfinished Gaudi church gets building permit after 137 years

BARCELONA, Spain -Property owners have a new yardstick by way of Spain for measuring frustration over building permit requests they suspect got lost in a local government bureaucracy.

Barcelona City Hall finally has issued a building permit for the unfinished church designed by architect Antoni Gaudi 137 years after construction started on La Sagrada Familia Basilica.

The city said on Friday it granted the current builders a license that is valid through 2026. The builders think that will be enough time to finish raising the landmark Roman Catholic church’s central towers.

The basilica’s first stone was laid in 1882, but Barcelona officials said there was no record showing a building permit first requested in 1885 ever was granted or rejected.

Barcelona officials said the city will be paid 4.6 million euros ($5.2 million) in fees under an agreement negotiated with a foundation devoted to completing and preserving La Sagrada Familia.

The agreement between the city and the foundation puts an end to “a historical anomaly in our city”, Barcelona official Janet Sanz.

More than 4.5 million visitors pay 17-38 euros each to tour the cathedral-sized church every year. The Barcelona government estimates 20 million tourists stand outside to marvel at the bell towers; Gaudi envisioned 12, one for each of Christ’s disciples, but they all may never get built.

Work on one of the central towers expected to get done while the building permit is valid will make La Sagrada Familia the tallest religious structure in Europe at 172.5 meters tall, according to the builders.

Barcelona has the largest concentration of buildings designed by Gaudi, whose bold modernist aesthetic still inspires architects. A fervent Catholic, he dedicated much of his professional life to Sagrada Familia, for which he incorporated elements of Christian symbolism along with the organic forms he often employed.

Gaudi died in 1926 after being struck by a trolley when just one facade was complete. He is buried in the church crypt.

Ongoing construction work is based on the architect’s plaster models, and photos and publications of his original drawings, which were destroyed in a 1930s fire, according to the Sagrada Familia foundation.

Cuban private sector severely affected by Washington’s travel restrictions

HAVANA – Until just a few days ago, Havana’s Old Town was swarming with US visitors, mainly from cruise ships, who toured the zone to learn about its history, culture and heritage.

Restaurants, cafeterias, craft sellers and the iconic convertible vintage cars thrived with thousands of tourists supporting their activities and directly engaging with the booming sector which currently employs more than 584,000 Cubans.

However, that reality dramatically changed this week when Washington decided to abruptly end visits of cruise ships to the island and people-to-people educational exchanges, the most popular categories used by US citizens to travel to Cuba.

Now, many of these small entrepreneurs are left wondering what the future of their businesses will be like with fewer visitors from the neighboring country.

“About 90 percent of incomes for private workers in Old Havana came from passengers on US cruise ships. We’ll be severely affected as they won’t come anymore,” said Miguel Angel Morales, the owner of private restaurant La Moneda Cubana.

This “paladar” as restaurants are called on the island is strategically located in one of Old Havana’s squares. It was opened in 2011 as part of the Caribbean nation’s small market-oriented reforms to open up the private sector.

Morales had direct contracts with US cruise lines and tour operators to bring in visitors to his eatery.

“As time passes by we’ll see how these new regulations affect us and the private businesses in the area,” he said.

The people-to-people educational travel was a category created under former US president Barack Obama that allowed US citizens to visit the island on organized thematic tours that promoted cultural exchanges between the two countries.

The thaw in ties, initiated in 2015 by Obama and former Cuban leader Raul Castro, led to a substantial increase in US visitors and the opening of thousands of small startup businesses like inns, restaurants, cafeterias, and craft shops.

US cruises brought to Cuba 340,000 US citizens in 2018, double the number of the previous year and placed the United States as the second largest market for visitors to the island just behind Canada, according to official data.

Another 298,000 US citizens visited the Caribbean country last year through other routes like commercial flights, private vessels and aircraft.

“With Obama it was the US tourism boom on the island, but over the last year with (US President Donald) Trump’s measures we have seen incomes decrease,” Morales said.

Other small business owners in the area, like 24-year-old Gillian Sosa, who sells crafts and souvenirs, believe Washington’s regulations could also scare off tourists from other nations.

“Trump’s new measures will definitely influence visitors from other countries, we have to wait to see what happens but our incomes are going to be less,” she said.

'We were not good enough' – Koeman bemoans lack of Dutch firepower

The manager believes his side made huge strides to reach the final of the Nations League but wants more cutting edge

Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman believes his team need to find greater attacking potency to truly become a force on the world stage again.

Portugal won the inaugural Nations League title by beating Koeman’s men 1-0 in Porto on Sunday – Goncalo Guedes firing home decisively with an hour played.

Progress to that point required victories over Germany, France and England and represents a considerable resurgence for a nation that failed to qualify for either Euro 2016 or the 2018 World Cup.

But while elite performances from the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Matthijs de Ligt and Frenkie de Jong have laid the groundwork for an exciting era, Koeman does have to contend with a lack of depth in attack.

Memphis Depay passed up a glorious headed chance during the second half, one a specialist in the number nine position might have eaten up, and it is clear to their boss where Netherlands’ weakness lies.

“We want to go on and push forward. We were not good enough, perhaps that is the case for tonight,” Koeman told a post-match news conference.

“But that is putting it negatively knowing the whole campaign we’ve had. We knew we had to be at our best and we were not.

“We know we made big steps in one year in the campaign of the Nations League. Against Germany, France, England, Portugal – maybe four of the strongest five or six teams in Europe.

“To make the next step maybe we need more time, more offensive strength is really important. To create more chances, to have what we missed tonight.

“Portugal, as we expected, were very solid as a team. They are used to playing that way. They have had more time together than us.

“They are handsome in front, maybe we missed some of that creativity in our attacking play.”

Nevertheless, Koeman was keen to underline praise for his players and the tournament he feels helped to galvanise them.

“I think it’s great tournament if you look back through the whole season, if you see how happy Portugal was to win this prize,” he added.

“The intensity in the group was really high and the idea to organise the Nations League was a perfect one. We are looking forward to the next one.”

'I didn't create enough' – De Jong says he could have done more in Nations League final defeat

The Dutch midfielder was mired in self-reflection in the wake of his side’s narrow defeat on Sunday evening as Goncalo Guedes’ effort proved decisive

Frenkie de Jong admitted that he felt he could have made a bigger impact following Netherlands’ Nations League final defeat at the hands of Portugal.

Oranje slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat against the hosts thanks to Goncalo Guedes’ 60th minute goal as the latter’s side lifted the inaugural Nations League trophy.

De Jong was named as Young Player of the Tournament after the final whistle despite his side’s defeat, but the Barcelona midfielder couldn’t help but feel as if the game might have had a different outcome if he was on top of his game.

“I could have done a lot more today,” he told NOS .

“I didn’t create enough spaces between their defence and midfield.”

Ronald Koeman’s side were taken all the way to extra-time by England in the semi-final on Thursday, but de Jong feels his side can’t use that as an excuse for their final defeat.

“The England game was tough,” he added.

“Some of us hadn’t played a game for three weeks and suddenly they had to play extra time, at this high level.

“But that may not be an excuse, because we are all professionals. That’s not the reason we lost, although we were not 100 percent fresh either.”

The 22-year-old won his ninth international cap against Portugal on Sunday – eight months after making his Netherlands debut in a friendly against Peru.

The midfielder is one of a number of young players in Koeman’s squad enjoying a meteoric rise of late, with Matthijs de Ligt heavily linked with a move to join his former Ajax team-mate at Camp Nou this summer.

Dutch football suffered a major setback after the national team missed out on the World Cup last summer, but De Jong believes he and his team-mates have shown the world they are ready for the future.

“We have shown as a team what we are capable of,” he continued.

“We’ve beaten some big teams and we gained experience in this semi-final and final.

“Of course, we have to qualify for the European championships first, but if we make it, we can take the experience of this tournament with us.”
