Manchester United fans have been pleading for a clear out of the squad, and Solskjaer has repeatedly suggested the club will sell players who don’t fit into his plans this summer.

Veteran wing-back Antonio Valencia’s departure was confirmed in April, while Juan Mata is expected to exit on free transfers due to expiring contracts. Ander Herrera was also announced to be leaving as a free agent in early May.

Expect to see Paul Pogba, Matteo Darmian and Alexis Sanchez linked with moves away from Old Trafford throughout the off-season as well following frustrating seasons.

As one of the richest clubs in the world, United have been linked with dozens of top-class players ahead of the transfer window including Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen, Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale, Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.

Manchester United 2019-20 Premier League fixtures

United will discover their Premier League fixture list when the official details are released to all clubs at 9am BST on June 13.

Solskjaer disappointingly missed out on securing Champions League football for the club, though his side qualified for the 2019–20 Europa League due to their sixth-placed finish in the Premier League.

As Manchester City won the FA Cup, United will enter the competition in the group stage, which will begin in September.

The Carabao Cup will kick off for United in the first round beginning on August 3, with the full fixture list to be released on June 20. The FA Cup third round will get underway from all Premier League clubs at the start of January.

Alisson braced for the biggest game of his life as Liverpool look for silver lining to their season

After missing out on the Premier League title in agonising fashion, the Reds are seeking to make amends in the Champions League final

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson is braced for the biggest game of his life, with the Reds counting down the days to a Champions League final clash with Tottenham.

Jurgen Klopp will lead his side into a European showpiece at Wanda Metropolitano on June 1.

The German coach is still seeking his first piece of major silverware at Anfield, having previously come unstuck in League Cup, Europa League and Champions League finals.

Liverpool are fully aware of what is at stake.

Having missed out on the Premier League title to Manchester City by a solitary point, there is a determination to ensure that a season that promised so much does deliver tangible reward.

The pressure will build on the Reds, and Spurs, from this point, with Alisson acknowledging that he has never before figured in a fixture of such magnitude.

The Brazilian goalkeeper, who was snapped up by Klopp for £65 million ($82m) in the wake of a nightmare showing from Loris Karis 12 months ago, told the club’s official website: “I can’t wait.

“Once we finished the Premier League, there were 20 days to prepare for the final. I’m looking forward to playing this big game. It’s maybe the biggest game in my life.”

Alisson has delivered on expectation at Anfield to this point, with the South American filling what has been a problematic position for Liverpool.

His debut campaign in the Premier League delivered 21 clean sheets, landing him the Golden Glove and a place in the history books.

“It was such an honour, such a big award in the world of football,” the 26-year-old added on claiming a prestigious prize.

“The award is not just mine, it’s an award for my team-mates also, who work hard to keep clean sheets in the game. It’s a target for everyone.”

Alisson and Liverpool will now be targeting another shutout when they take on Spurs, with both sides having shown how devastating they can be as attacking threats when completing stunning second-leg turnarounds in memorable semi-final ties with Barcelona and Ajax respectively.

'It was a nightmare' – Pique admits Barca are still haunted by Champions League mauling at Liverpool

The Spanish champions were the victims of a stunning comeback at Anfield, which the World Cup-winning defender is eager to move on from

Gerard Pique has admitted that Barcelona’s Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of Liverpool was a “nightmare” and the squad has not yet fully recovered.

Jurgen Klopp’s side suffered a 3-0 defeat at Camp Nou in the first leg of the last four tie, which left the Blaugrana on the brink of a final berth, but the second leg did not go according to plan.

The Reds staged a remarkable turnaround at Anfield in the return, winning 4-0 thanks to braces from Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Barcelona were knocked out of the continental tournament in humiliating fashion for the second successive year, having been beaten by Roma in similar circumstances at the quarter-final stage in 2017-18.

Pique, who started both legs against Liverpool, has confessed that the result left a mark on the Spanish champions which will take time to heal.

“It has been hard to get up emotionally because the days passed and you did not forget the defeat, it is a fall that will last over time,” he told El Pais.

“But we must take a step forward. It was a very difficult situation. The team sees that it is not going, you see that they are squeezing and that it is very recent last year.

“But we must not torture ourselves. Yes, that is one of our great defeats. But that’s the sport, where sometimes you have to bite the dust.

“It was a nightmare and you have to assume it because it can happen again.

“But we must understand why it happened and help us in the future because we want to raise the Champions [League] again.”

Ernesto Valverde’s side were unable to learn from their mistakes against Roma, having also surrendered a three-goal lead against the Italian giants the previous season.

Barca have failed to reach the Champions League final since 2015 and Pique believes the memory of the upset at Stadio Olimpico affected the players’ mindset against the Reds.

He also praised Liverpool for employing their infamous high press to great effect, before acknowledging the influence of the Anfield crowd.

“When something like this happens, everything or almost everything has gone wrong,” he added.

“I think that on a mental level, some people were affected by what happened in Rome because we had it very recently.

“With the first goal, which was very fast, unconsciously you see the image of Rome.

“Then two more came very quickly and it looked too much like what happened a year ago. Surely it was a mental block, but football was also missing.

“And they pressed very high, very intense, Anfield also played his role, we were not able. Sometimes happens. It was a very hard day.”

‘Sarri said he didn’t want me to stay’ – David Luiz reveals how he turned Chelsea career around

The Brazilian defender has committed to a new contract at Stamford Bridge after proving his worth to a coach who originally questioned his value

David Luiz has penned a new contract to commit his immediate future to Chelsea, but the Brazilian has revealed that Maurizio Sarri told him he was free to leave in his first week as Blues boss.

An Italian coach arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2018.

He inherited a squad from countryman Antonio Conte and was eager to put his own stamp on things.

That included telling an experienced defender that he did not form part of his plans after an injury-hit 2017-18 campaign.

Luiz told the Daily Mail of his early experiences under a new manager: “We had a conversation in the first week he arrived. He didn’t want me to stay and that was normal.

“I’d been injured for a long period. I was in the last year of my contract. I was 31 years old and everyone was saying, ‘No, not David’. Then, after three days he saw me training and said, ‘No, you are going to stay’.”

After proving his worth to Sarri, Luiz has gone to make 49 appearances this season and earn a new two-year deal.

“I want to play at a high level,” he added on his future ambition.

“I can say I want to play football until I’m 100, but I want to continue at a high level, so I have to look after myself, have discipline and work every single day.

“I want to play for Chelsea and try to win big titles. I have two more years on my contract, but maybe I can stay for five more. We don’t know.”

Luiz has already won the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League and Europa League across two spells with Chelsea and is now chasing down another continental crown.

His success to date has been enjoyed during a period of much change in west London, with Sarri the latest in a long line of coaches to have been charged with the task of delivering major silverware.

“Seven? Did I miss one?” Luiz said of the managers he was worked under with the Blues.

“Carlo Ancelotti brought me here. Under Andre Villas-Boas I was playing every game. Under Roberto Di Matteo we won the Champions League and the FA Cup. With Rafa Benitez, we won the Europa League. With Jose Mourinho, we were in the semi-finals of the Champions League. With Antonio Conte, we won the Premier League. With Maurizio Sarri we have the possibility to win the Europa League.

“With all seven I played. So that means I understood something and was trying my best. And we need to be respectful and understand the history of every single one.

“To be the manager of Chelsea means they did something great. Every one of them had their style and way of football; their way to think football, to teach football. I tried to learn something from every single one.”

Joao Felix in, Sane out: Manchester City's transfer plans this summer

The Premier League champions have identified two players they are ready to make offers for, and could go for another two depending on outgoings

Pep Guardiola has already warded off complacency at Manchester City once, and his task now – after following up a 100-point season by winning a domestic treble – is to motivate his players to get even better.

To do that, he wants new blood in his team.

“Every player has to feel, ‘I have to play good or I don’t play’ if you want to be consistent after what we have done these two seasons,” Guardiola said last Friday.

“They have to feel, ‘I have to win again, if not I have problems, I’m in trouble, I cannot be longer here.'”

City’s rough outline this summer, sources have told Goal, is to bring in four players and ship out four players. A new defensive midfielder is the priority, but a new centre-back has also been targeted.

If City sell Danilo and Leroy Sane (or Gabriel Jesus), they are also prepared to move for a right-back and a new forward.

Goal looks at their preferred targets below…

DEFENCE

After Vincent Kompany’s shock departure, City are in the market for a new centre-back. They had been talking to Ajax’s Matthijs De Ligt around this time last year, with a view to a move this summer, but Goal understands the Blues have decided not to rival Barcelona, and other clubs, for his signature after all. Part of the reasoning is that they do not want to deal with his agent, Mino Raiola.

Guardiola recently said transfers have become difficult because “everthing is so expensive, the agents as well are so expensive”, while there has been bad blood between the representative and City since Mario Balotelli’s days in Manchester.

Instead, the leading candidate replace Kompany is Leicester City’s Harry Maguire. Guardiola is said to be a fan of his aerial and leadership ability, as well as his confidence in possession. City could have to pay around £60 million ($76m) for the England international.

Nicolas Otamendi could also leave. Goal has previously reported that he would favour a move to Valencia, but Atletico Madrid are also believed to be interested and that could be a move that suits all parties; Otamendi wants to play more, and Atleti need to repace the Inter-bound Diego Godin.

If City do let two major centre-backs leave, they will only bring in one replacement – and that is hoped to be Maguire.

The shortfall at the back will be made up by Fernandinho, who could drop back for certain matches, and, when it comes to the Carabao Cup, Eric Garcia. The 18-year-old is set to be promoted to the first-team set-up next season, although would not be expected to play much in the Premier League just yet.

Danilo could also leave City this summer (Inter have been interested), and if so that would mean a new right-back comes in. City are big admirers of Crystal Palace’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and could make an official move for him once Danilo’s situation is clearer.

The 21-year-old has pledged to stay at Palace next season, but Manchester United are rumoured to be interested, and City could also join the party. If so, he is expected to cost more than £50m ($63m). But any move for a right-back depends on Danilo’s future.

City will go into next season relying on Benjamin Mendy to be fit enough to play a role in the first team, even if it is back-up to Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Ben Chilwell had been on the verge of a move to the Etihad Stadium until the end of April, when the Premier League champions suddenly pulled the plug. If Mendy gets another serious injury at the start of next season, City will look to buy a replacement in January, and sell the Frenchman. Unless there is another u-turn, Chilwell will not sign for City this summer.

Fabian Delph is also expected to leave, along with Eliaquim Mangala.

POSSIBLE INS: Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka

POSSIBLE OUTS: Vincent Kompany, Nicolas Otamendi, Danilo, Fabian Delph, Eliaquim Mangala

MIDFIELD

City’s one and only option to strengthen the deep-lying midfield role is Atletico’s Rodri. The club identified him as their top target for the role long before the end of the season, and they are ready to pay his buy-out clause.

Barcelona and Bayern Munich have been credited with a rival interest, while Atleti could offer him a new contract, but City are confident he will choose them, having given his approval to their terms some time ago.

There remains a chance that Ilkay Gundogan could leave, but the current expectation is that he will stay. If he does not sign a new contract this summer, or if he says he will not sign one during next season, City could cash in.

However, the club’s intention has always been to keep him, and that position has been strengthened due to his fantastic form at the end of last season. They had feared that he was set on leaving, but contract talks are set to resume soon, if they have not done so already, and it is now more likely than not that he will agree to a new contract.

City had been looking at Sporting’s Bruno Fernandes as an alternative, but talk of advanced negotiations turned out to be exagerrated, and as it stands there will be no further movement on that.

David Silva was said to have received an offer from Japan, but it is expected that he will stay at City next season and fulfil the final year of his contract. A move to Asia could be on the cards next summer, however.

POSSIBLE INS: Rodri

POSSIBLE OUTS: Ilkay Gundogan

ATTACK

Bayern Munich have confirmed that they are “thinking about” a move for Leroy Sane, and that could end up coming to fruition. City and Guardiola want to keep the Germany winger, but they have been trying to renew his contract for over a year, with no breakthrough.

If he decides to sign a new deal, City will gladly keep him. If he does not, however, that could open the door for Bayern. Goal understands that a bid of €100m would be the tipping point for City. Sane’s situation, as of right now, is 50-50. Another major European club is believed to have shown some level of interest, but Bayern are the stand-out candidates.

Sane’s contract talks had stalled because of interfering by his mother (his father is acting as his agent). City believe that his mother has been pushing for a move to Bayern, and leaking information to the German press.

If Sane does go then City would further explore a move for Joao Felix. Goal reported in April that City had been in talks with Benfica about the 19-year-old, although they are reluctant to pay his buy-out clause of €120m. City have spoken at length with agent Jorge Mendes about a move, but as it stands the club  would not push ahead with it unless Sane leaves.

Or if Gabriel Jesus leaves. City would be open to that possibility, so long as they receive a high fee and could replace him with somebody they deem to be a considerable upgrade.

Felix fits into that bracket, but there are not many others. The Blues did have a close look at Luka Jovic throughout the campaign but a move was never a serious possibility, perhaps because he is set to move elsewhere.

POSSIBLE INS: Joao Felix

POSSIBLE OUTS: Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus

Premier League & MLS appeal to Dani Alves as he ponders PSG future

The veteran Brazilian full-back would like to take on an English adventure before retiring, while a spell in the United States would also be welcomed

Dani Alves has confirmed spells in the Premier League and MLS appeal to him, with the Brazilian still mulling over his options at Paris Saint-Germain.

At 36 years of age, the veteran full-back is approaching the end of his career.

He is, however, still competing at the very top of the game and will form part of his country’s plans for a Copa America campaign on home soil this summer.

It could be that he finishes that tournament ready to take on a new challenge, with no extension to an expiring contract in France having been agreed as yet.

Alves told ESPN when offering an update on those discussions: “The only real attachment I had in life was the one I had with my mom when I had an umbilical cord, and even that one was cut off.

“I’m a free man and I’m among those who think that one plus one equals one instead of two, since we are working together. If we remain on the same page, we will stay together. If that’s not the case, then it won’t happen.”

Pressed further on whether he expects to end up on the same page as PSG, Alves added: “As of now, we are not.

“They know I want to go in a direction and that I want to help this club to change its history. But I don’t know if that’s what they want. I can contribute a lot inside PSG and if we can’t agree on it, then we will see.”

If no agreement is reached in Paris, then Alves – who has been linked with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City in the past – could take on an English adventure.

“It’s not a dream, because I make my dreams come true with effort,” he said of the Premier League.

“I’ve said I would like it. It is a very exciting league; they feel a lot of respect and what I like is the respect they have for the professional player. If he gives his all, they respect him. And here, in the rest of Europe, it looks like that if you don’t win matches then you don’t get any respect. I don’t have that problem, I’m a winner.”

Alves admits that a spell in England remains “the goal” before hanging up his boots, but those plans remain “on the backburner” for now.

It could be that he chooses to head down a different path, with the Brazil international admitting that a spell in the United States is a possibility.

Asked if MLS appeals to him, Alves said: “Frankly, most of the things they do in the U.S. are enticing. Saying otherwise would be a lie. Because of the organisation they have, their structure, the fact they always do things in a big way and they strive for excellence, that is something very appealing for everyone.

“If it wasn’t a nice league, no one would even think of going there. When they talk about it, they know how important it is and the growth it has experienced. Obviously, you always keep an eye on it, no doubt.”

Canadian Household Debt Hits New High Despite Slowing Mortgages

TORONTO — Canadian household debt reached a record high at the end of last year even as mortgage activity slowed, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. said in a report out Wednesday.

The debt to income ratio of Canadians hit a record high of 178.5 per cent in the fourth quarter last year as mortgage holders continued to take on non-mortgage debt.

The ratio increased as average monthly required payments rose 4.5 per cent compared with a year earlier, while disposable income rose only 2.5 per cent, the agency said.

Debt levels rose as average balances for credit cards and lines of credit grew at a faster pace than in 2017, especially in Vancouver, Edmonton and Toronto, it said.

Delinquency rates, however, remain low and stable, said CMHC senior market analyst Genevieve Lapointe in the report.

“Despite high debt levels, delinquency rates remain low and the number of highly indebted and more vulnerable consumers has decreased.”

The mortgage delinquency rate came in at 0.3 per cent, up 0.01 of a percentage point, while the share of mortgages held by those with credit scores below 600 continued to trend lower.

The total number of new mortgages issued in the quarter came in at 223,000, down 4.8 per cent from a year earlier.

The slower volume came as the market slowed and average prices fell on slightly higher interest rates, slower economic growth and stricter mortgage regulations.

The new mortgage regulations, which set higher stress-tests for would-be borrowers in an effort to slow the market, have come under criticism in some corners for making real estate less accessible.

The International Monetary Fund said Tuesday that Canada should maintain the regulations because household debt remains high, and a gradual slowdown in the housing market is desirable.

The average value of new loans in the quarter was 3.8 per cent lower than a year ago at $264,000 as house prices remain historically elevated, while the average value of all mortgages rose 3.1 per cent to $209,570 in the quarter, said the CMHC.

The agency said debt issues are increasing for older consumers as the share of mortgage holders 55 and older continues to grow. It said mortgage delinquency rates in the 65-and-above age group have been rising and have been the highest of all age groups since late 2015, while still relatively low.

Mike Pence Has Been ‘Valuable Partner For Canada' On Free Trade: Chrystia Freeland

OTTAWA — U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence has been a valuable partner to Canada because he supports free trade, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said Thursday.

Freeland says the government is looking forward to getting an update on U.S. efforts to ratify the new North American free trade pact when Pence visits Ottawa next week.

Canada has yet to table legislation in Parliament to ratify the new version of the 25-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement, a treaty President Donald Trump has lambasted and repeatedly threatened to tear up. In the past, Freeland has labelled the Trump administration as protectionist, especially during the long and sometimes bitter NAFTA renegotiation.

Watch: Freeland says Canadians were ‘so nice’ during tense trade talks

Freeland presented a more conciliatory view of Pence, who will be in Ottawa next Thursday following the Trump administration’s decision last week to lift its controversial tariffs on Canadian and Mexican steel and aluminum. Canada and Mexico said it would have been difficult to ratify the new trade deal with the metals tariffs in place.

“It’s important for Canadians to remember that Vice-President Pence has been a strong and effective supporter of free trade. He has been someone who has spoken out in the United States about the value of NAFTA for both Canadians and Americans,” Freeland said after touring the Rio Tinto aluminum plant in Jonquiere, Que.

Freeland said Canada especially appreciated Pence’s positive comments about NAFTA during the July 2017 meeting of U.S. state governors in Rhode Island, which Freeland attended with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Freeland was seen taking notes during Pence’s speech, in which he said: “We will modernize NAFTA for the 21st century so that it is a win-win-win for all of our trading partners in North America.”

Hearing Pence use the phase “win-win-win” was significant, Freeland said.

“And he turned out to be right. He’s been a very important, valuable partner for Canada.”

Uncertainty continues to swirl in the U.S. over Trump’s ability to get the new trade pact approved by Congress because of an escalating feud between him and U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is now openly criticizing his fitness to serve as president.

On Tuesday night, the White House released a letter Trump sent to Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer expressing his preference for Congress to deal first with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

“Once Congress has passed USMCA, we should turn our attention to a bipartisan infrastructure package,” Trump said.

Wednesday, Trump walked out on a meeting with Pelosi and said he wasn’t interested in co-operating with Democrats on infrastructure spending and other projects until Congress abandons its investigations of him.

“I wish that his family or his administration or his staff would have an intervention for the good of the country,” Pelosi told reporters on Thursday. She said she is praying for her country and the president, and that she is concerned for his well-being.

“Maybe he wants to take a leave of absence,” the veteran Democrat mused.

The White House shot back at the Democrats, blaming them for blocking progress on important spending aimed at repairing crumbling roads and bridges.

Lawmakers are now leaving Capitol Hill and heading into a Memorial Day long weekend before Pence arrives in Ottawa next week.

“We will certainly discuss the domestic ratification path for the new NAFTA here in Canada,” said Freeland. “And I think we’ll be very interested to hear from him how he sees ratification of the new NAFTA in the United States.”

Canadian House Price Forecast: What The Next 5 Years Will Look Like In 33 Cities

The latest Canadian house price forecast from Moody’s Analytics really has no good news for anyone.

If you’re a homeowner hoping to make big equity gains, forget it. And if you’re an aspiring homebuyer hoping for a reprieve from astronomical urban house prices, forget that too.

The forecast calls for house prices nationwide to grow by an average of 2.2 per cent per year over the next five years. Given that the Bank of Canada is predicting inflation at 2 per cent in the coming years, this means that inflation-adjusted house prices will likely see no net growth.

Watch: This office space is what passes for a one-bedroom rental in Toronto. Story continues below.

With Canada’s economy bouncing back from a slowdown at the start of the year, Moody’s expects mortgage rates to rise by a full percentage point over the next two years. That increase in monthly housing costs, combined with high prices and high debt levels, will keep prices in check, the research firm predicts.

“House price appreciation will slow down in 2020, turn briefly negative in 2021, and only recover in the following years,” wrote Andres Carbacho-Burgos, a director and head housing economist at Moody’s Analytics.

The upshot is that this will improve affordability by giving people’s incomes a chance to catch up to house prices. But given that wages are growing only a little faster than inflation, improvements in affordability are likely to be minor.

Toronto should avoid any further house price declines, thanks to heavy demand for housing, but price growth will be limited to an average of 3.3 per cent in the coming years, the forecast said.

And Vancouver “will be lucky to maintain level prices through 2024 given how overvalued house and apartment prices are currently,” Carbacho-Burgos wrote.

He sees house prices falling in the metro area by 0.8 per cent  over the next year, which would mark a considerable improvement from the 7.3-per-cent price decline Vancouver has seen in the past year. Moody’s longer-term forecast of 0.9-per-cent price growth for Vancouver is practically a rounding error.

Biggest problems in Western Canada

Some of the weakest housing markets in the coming years will be on the Prairies, where a struggling oil industry will keep real estate weak, the Moody’s report predicted.

Saskatchewan’s two largest cities ― Regina and Saskatoon ― will see outright price declines over the next five years. Regina’s prices are forecast to fall 3.1 per cent per year, implying a more than 15-per-cent decline by 2024.

“Over the coming year, only Montréal will have moderate house price appreciation compared with the other large metro areas, but in subsequent years there will be a partial recovery, with Toronto doing somewhat better,” Carbacho-Burgos predicted.

Like many other analysts, Carbacho-Burgos points the finger at tougher housing market regulations for the slowdown. But he says it would be a mistake to think the rules hobbled what was once a strong market. Rather, they prevented an even worse correction down the road “if affordability had become unsustainable and mortgage debt (costs) had climbed even higher,” he wrote.

“The current cooling of the housing market is therefore not really bad news, but should be seen more as a necessary consequence.”

Trudeau Touts Canada's Retaliatory Tariffs As Key To Ending Quarrel With U.S.

SEPT-ÎLES, Que. — Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on American goods played a key role in restoring free access to the U.S. market for Canadian steel and aluminum, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says.

Trudeau was visiting an aluminum processor Tuesday in Sept-Iles, Que., part of a victory lap after the United States lifted tariffs on Canadian metals late last week.

“I think one of the things that we saw very clearly, and the Americans learned, is that Canadians were going to stay firm,” Trudeau said at Aluminerie Alouette, in the town on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

“We strategically put a significant number of American products and produce under tariffs and that had an impact on governors, on members of Congress, who continued to talk to the president and to members of the administration about lifting these tariffs.”

The U.S. imposed import taxes of 25 per cent on Canadian steel and 10 per cent on aluminum a year ago as a pressure tactic when negotiations on a new North American free-trade agreement got difficult.

Canada responded by putting taxes on similar U.S. goods, but also on a range of other products — from cucumbers to coffee to whisky to playing cards to lawn mowers. In many cases, these were grown, processed or manufactured in districts represented by key American politicians.

Canada, the United States and Mexico signed the new trade treaty at the end of last year; it awaits ratification in each country’s national legislature.

USMCA a ‘good deal for Canadians’: Trudeau

“With the full lift of the steel and aluminum tariffs, the last major barrier against ratification has been taken away — on both sides, because it was also a barrier to the American ratification process,” Trudeau said. ”(The agreement) is a good deal for Canadians, for workers, for businesses on both sides of the border.”

Time is short, though, with just a few weeks left before the House of Commons breaks for the summer and a federal election scheduled for October.

Trudeau said he’s not worried that a closer relationship with the United States under President Donald Trump will make resolving tensions with China more difficult. The two economic giants are in a fight of their own, with Canada in the middle since the RCMP arrested an executive of China’s Huawei Technologies last December on a U.S. extradition warrant.

Global leaders concerned about China, PM says

China responded by detaining two Canadians — former diplomat Michael Kovrig and entrepreneur Michael Spavor — and beginning to obstruct trade in Canadian products such as canola, soybeans and pork.

“I speak to global leaders who are all very concerned about some of the decisions and some of the positionings that China has taken recently,” said Trudeau, who was asked about reports that Canada has sent a parliamentary delegation to aid in securing the release of the two men.

“Canada obviously is in a difficult situation with China right now but we’re going to continue to hold strong, we’re going to continue to stand up for our values and principles. We’re going to put the safety and security of Canadians first and foremost, as we always do, and we’re going to work with our allies to ensure that China understands that Canada is going to stay strong.”
