Led by clinical Soto, U.S. U-20s show their quality in convincing World Cup win vs. Nigeria

The forward’s two goals led the way, but Tab Ramos’ side put together a complete team performance to bounce back from its World Cup-opening loss

It took a loss to wake up, but the U.S. Under-20 national team rebounded from its World Cup-opening loss to Ukraine with the exact type of performance expected from the most talented U.S. Under-20 team ever assembled.

That label looked like a mistake after the Americans dropped a disappointing 2-1 decision to Ukraine on Friday, but Tab Ramos’ team looked like a much more polished and potent team in Monday’s convincing 2-0 win against Nigeria.

Several players who were shaky against Ukraine improved against Nigeria, while Ramos also did a better job, inserting Sebastian Soto into the starting lineup after leaving him out of the starting 11 against Ukraine and deploying Tim Weah as a central striker.

That move paid major dividends. Soto provided the presence in the penalty area the U.S. attack lacked against Ukraine, while Weah looked more comfortable operating on the left wing. Paxton Pomykal was able to combine with Alex Mendez in central midfield while Konrad De La Fuente worked the right wing well due to the Nigerian defense having to keep tabs on Soto.

The Americans dominated possession in their first match, but what was different against Nigeria was the patience and precision, as well as Nigeria’s willingness to attack. Ukraine sat back with numbers, making it difficult to break down their five-man defensive wall. The Americans held a 2-1 edge in possession, but their inability to break down Ukraine left them frustrated and ineffective.

On Monday, the Americans held a 60-40 edge in possession, and though they were outshot by the Nigerians, they were able to generate more promising build-ups in the final third. Of course, part of that was down to an attack-minded Nigeria having to open up even more as it chased the game, but it was also a product of more incisive passing by the U.S. team’s creative players, as well as Soto’s hold-up play and intellgent runs from the striker position.

D.C. United midfielder Chris Durkin was another one of the U.S. team’s standouts, taking advantage of the increased amount of space left open by Nigeria’s attack-minded setup. Durkin was one of the players who underperformed against Ukraine, at least in part because of Ukraine’s defensive organization and penchant for bypassing him with long passes to their front men. Nigeria’s style played to Durkin’s strengths, as he won several balls in midfield as Nigeria kept trying to work through the middle, giving Durkin pleny of opportunities to show off his precise passing from deep in midfield.

It might have seemed risky for Ramos to sit Brandon Servania after his good showing against Ukraine, but Ramos banked on Alex Mendez and Paxton Pomykal working well together and they did, using their tanacity to contribute defensively to help deal with Nigeria’s playmakers, while also being sharp in attack.

No play better symbolized how much sharper the Americans were on Monday than the sequence leading to Soto’s second goal, which came just seconds into the second half. The United States took the opening kickoff and passed it around from the right wing, to the goalkeeper, then to the left wing, where it inevitable reached Chris Gloster, who capped an incisive run with an inch-perfect pass to Soto in the penalty area, and Soto made the most of his Hannover teammate’s setup, finishing expertly to make it 2-0 just 26 seconds into the second half.

Nigeria continued to attack, and did put some dangerous chances on target, forcing U.S. goalkeeper Brady Scott and the U.S. defense to hold on, but that test was a good one for an American back-line that looked shaky against Ukraine. Sergino Dest was much steadier against Nigeria, while Scott showed the poise in goal that helped him earn the starting nod for the United States. The central defender tandem of Chris Richards and Aboubacar Keita put in another good shift, while Gloster put together another strong shift at left back, capped by his stellar assist on Soto’s second goal.

The challenge now for Ramos will be deciding whether to deploy a full-strength lineup against Qatar in hopes of finishing first in Group D, or choosing to rest some key starters with an eye toward the Round of 16. Winning the group has the advantage of securing a round of 16 match-up against a third-place team from another group, as well as avoiding having to face another group winner until the semifinals. Unfortunately for the Americans, they will need Nigeria to beat Ukraine to give the United States any hope of topping the group, and a Nigeria win and United States win on the final matchday would leave a three-way tie atop the group, with goal difference being the determining tiebreaker.

Finishing second in the group could mean having to face highly-rated France. A third-place finish in the group wouldn’t necessarily be disastrous because it could mean a matchup against an opponent like Senegal or Italy. Neiither would be regarded as easy, but neither would be considered clearly worse than having to face France.

Armed with revamped confidence instilled by Monday’s convincing victory, the Americans aren’t likely to fear any opponent it faceds in the knockout round, but they must force dispose of Qatar to ensure a knockout round spot, and some momentum to go with it. Ramos should turn to his bench for some fresh options such as Ulysses Llanez, Richie Ledezma, Justin Rennicks, Julian Araujo and Mark McKenzie, allowing players like Alex Mendez, Tim Weah, Chris Durkin and Paxton Pomykal to recharge their batteries (and allowing Chris Richards to recover from the leg injury he suffered against Nigeria) before having to face what is sure to be a tough Round of 16 opponent.

Ramos will be sure to let his team know it can’t look past Qatar, but Monday’s victory should have the Americans feeling confident that the opening loss to Ukraine was just a stumble, and a deep tournament run is well within their grasp.

Perez: Ramos can't leave Madrid for CSL on free transfer

The club president discussed the defender’s request for a move to China

Florentino Perez insisted Sergio Ramos will not leave Real Madrid on a free transfer after confirming the club’s captain is considering a move to the Chinese Super League (CSL).

News emerged on Monday that Madrid star Ramos had reportedly requested permission to join a team in China after meeting with president Perez.

Goal can confirm that Ramos recently met with coach Zinedine Zidane and president Perez to express doubts over this future, but that there was reason to believe he could stay with the club.

The 33-year-old centre-back was believed to be close to joining Premier League giants Manchester United in 2015 before extending his Madrid contract, which now runs until 2021.

Perez was asked about speculation over Ramos and the Madrid boss said he is not prepared to sanction a CSL deal that would see the defender leave on a free.

“They [Ramos and his advisors] came to see me in my office,” Perez told Onda Cero’s El Transistor.

“They mentioned that he might leave but without a transfer fee because transfer fees in China are very complicated.

“I told him that he can’t leave and that we would be speaking to the Chinese club interested in signing him.

“It’s impossible to let your captain leave for free, that would be setting a bad precedent.”

Ramos has enjoyed great success at the Santiago Bernabeu since arriving from Sevilla in 2005, winning four LaLiga titles and four Champions League trophies among others.

The Spain international scored six goals in 28 La Liga appearances, while he played 40 matches in all competitions.

However, the season ended in disappointing fashion with Real Madrid finishing third in La Liga while  the club’s Champions League title defence ended in the last 16 with a stunning loss to eventual semi-finalists Ajax.

Phoenix players shining for New Zealand at U-20 World Cup

The A-League flag is still being flown strongly despite Australia’s absence

Wellington Phoenix players have scored four goals between them across New Zealand’s first two games at the U-20 World Cup in Poland.

The Kiwis are currently top of Group C after a 5-0 win over Honduras was followed up with a 2-0 victory against Norway.

New Zealand’s side has an unsurprisingly strong Phoenix presence with five players in their most recent starting eleven with ties to the A-League club.

Nix trio Ben Waine, Sarpreet Singh and Gianni Stensness have all got their name on the score sheet so far at the tournament with the latter scoring a stunner on Tuesday morning (AEST).

Stensness was actually born in Australia and was called up to an U20’s training camp in early 2017 before Kiwi coach Des Buckingham convinced him to switch allegiances.

Departed Phoenix coach Mark Rudan made a point of giving younger players a chance this season in Wellington and that faith is seemingly being rewarded on the international stage.

New Zealand will round out their group stage with a match against Uruguay on Friday morning with top spot on the line but progression to the knockout stages already confirmed.

'I went from baby to big man at Chelsea' – Hazard hints at potential exit ahead of Europa League final

The Belgian winger admitted he was scared when he arrived at Stamford Bridge but has grown into a leading figure over his seven years

Eden Hazard says he has grown from a baby to a “big man” in his seven years at Chelsea as he approaches potentially his last game for the club.

The 28-year-old winger has suggested he will leave Chelsea this summer, with Real Madrid expected to sign him.

Hazard can win a second Europa League title with the Blues before departings as his side meet Arsenal in the final in Baku on Wednesday.

Reflecting on his time at Stamford Bridge, the Belgium international says he made the correct choice in joining Chelsea instead of any other Premier League side.

“When I came here I was a baby. Now I am a big man,” Hazard said according to The Mirror. “But as a person I didn’t change. I am still the same.

“As a player I score more goals and I have more experience, but I try to be the same as when I started. And then when I finish I will try to be the same.

“I was a little bit scared when I first arrived. Didier Drogba had left and when you have Drogba in the team for sure you win a trophy. But at the end I played with top players.

“And if you look at my seven years at Chelsea we did something amazing together.

“We won trophies together and I am just happy. I had a chance to sign for Manchester United, Man City, Tottenham but I made the right decision.

“I spoke with the owner and I had Drogba and Joe Cole on the phone telling me this was the best club.”

Hazard has scored 19 goals and made 16 assists in all competitions this season, making it his most productive campaign with the London club.

But due to Chelsea’s failure to challenge for the Premier League title and Carabao Cup final defeat in March, the attacker says he has had better years and believes he can keep improving.

“I just want to enjoy myself on the pitch and play good,” he added.

“The best example is with Belgium. I played my best game against Brazil in the World Cup and I didn’t score or make an assist. That is what I like to do.

“I don’t think about scoring goals or assists. I just want to do my best. In terms of goals and assists this has been my best season, but for me a good season is not whether I score 40 goals.

“I don’t think it is my best season overall. I don’t look on just about statistics. I can still improve.

“You can always improve and you can always learn in football, the more you play the more you learn. That is my philosophy here or if I play in another country. The main thing is to be happy on the pitch.”

And he is confident of giving the fans a reason to celebrate by bringing home another continental trophy.

“When you play for Chelsea, at the start of the season people think about which trophy we can have at the end of May,” he said.

“So this one is an important one. We lost the EFL Cup final two months ago, so at the end of the season this is the trophy we can go for.

“If we win the Europa League, the season can still be good. OK not perfect, because at the end you want to compete for the Premier League and FA Cup.

“But we have improved in the past two months. And if we go to Baku with a strong approach we can do something good there.”

Xhaka: Arsenal cannot afford another season outside the Champions League

The Swiss midfielder knows the Gunners have missed out on Champions League football for the past two seasons, and he’s determined to avoid a third

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka has stated the club simply cannot afford to miss out on Champions League football for a third season in a row.

The North London outfit missed out on qualification via a place in the Premier League’s top four after a disastrous run that saw them win just one of their final five games of the campaign.

However, the Gunners have one last chance to land a prized spot at European football’s top table by beating Chelsea in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

After becoming an almost permanent fixture in the Champions League during Arsene Wenger’s 22-year reign as Arsenal boss, Xhaka is well aware that missing out once again could kick-start a worrying habit at the Emirates Stadium.

“We have to be in the Champions League,” said the Switzerland international. “We didn’t play there for two years and we have to be there next season.

“All the players, the fans, the club – we want to play against the best teams, and the best teams are in the Champions League.

“We speak about the season – what was good, what was bad, what can happen if we win the Europa League.

“We had a good season but lost our way a little bit in the last five games. But if you’re in the Europa League final and can take a trophy, get into the Champions League … we’ll take that.”

In what is boss Unai Emery’s first season in charge at Arsenal, Xhaka is hoping the new manager’s extraordinary record in this competition can give the Gunners an edge in Wednesday’s all-London final in Baku.

Emery won the trophy in three successive seasons while in charge at Sevilla, beating Benfica, Dnipro and Liverpool in consecutive finals to land a remarkable hat-trick between 2014 and 2016.

It is a record Xhaka hopes will stand Arsenal in good stead.

“We don’t speak about it to each other,” said the 26-year-old, “but he (Emery) speaks with us about his own experience and how he won the trophy three times.

“He would be the first coach if he wins a fourth, so it’s nice if you are alone at the top.

“If you’re three times in the final in the Europa League you have a lot of experience, you know how you’re feeling, and how the pressure is. Anything else stays within our group. He takes away the pressure, but if you are in a final there is always pressure.

“The finals show how strong the league is. It is the strongest league in the world, better than Spain.

“I’ve never played in Spain, but I’ve played in Germany, I’ve played here and I can only say in my experience that it is strong enough, the English league.

“I don’t speak about the past. I have to speak about the final, we can’t change nothing in the Premier League, it’s over.

“What we can change is winning the Europa League and being back in the Champions League.”

Griezmann & De Ligt in, Coutinho out – Barcelona's transfer plans this summer

Champions League failure and defeat in the Copa del Rey cast a shadow over the season for the Catalans, who are already thinking ahead to 2019-20

Runaway La Liga champions, Copa del Rey finalists, Champions League semi-finalists. And yet, all is not well around the Barcelona camp.

Ernesto Valverde’s men still carry the scars of failure to see out a seemingly unassailable advantage over Liverpool, with the coach still liable to pay the price for that 4-0 drubbing at Anfield.

But whether or not Valverde stays, there is bound to be plenty of movement around the Catalan giants as they begin to look ahead to 2019-20.

Barca, however, will not have a blank cheque to strengthen their ranks. Any new signings will have to be paid for by similarly lucrative sales, a fact that means more than one established star could be lining up away from Camp Nou come the end of the summer.

Will Philippe Coutinho pay the price for humiliation against his old club? Will Frenkie de Jong be joined by more of his former Ajax colleagues in Catalunya? Goal takes an in-depth look at Barcelona’s transfer plans for what is sure to be an extremely busy window.

GOALKEEPERS

Alongside Lionel Messi, Marc Andre ter Stegen is perhaps the Barcelona player with least cause for concern over his place in the team. The Germany goalkeeper continued his steady progress over yet another excellent season and is considered untouchable in the Barca’s starting line-up.

It is behind Ter Stegen that some doubts have begun to creep in. Jasper Cillessen is almost certain to leave after two years deputising, leaving the No. 2 keeper position vacant.

If the Dutchman ends his links with Barcelona, the Liga champions are ready to turn to an ex-Espanyol player. Pau Lopez played the entire season as Betis’ first choice and the fluid dialogue between the two clubs should make negotiations for the 24-year-old’s signature pleasingly straightforward.

IN:  Pau Lopez.

OUT: Jasper Cillessen.

DEFENCE

When it comes to the middle of defence, there is only one name under consideration. Either Matthijs de Ligt arrives from Ajax or Barca will stay out of the market for new centre-backs.

The young Netherlands international is a unanimous target for the club’s authorities, but the intense competition for places at Camp Nou means he remains uncertain, with Juventus looking to take advantage with their own approach.

Thomas Vermaelen, meanwhile, is out of contract and will be leaving the club, as is Jeison Murillo, who returns to Valencia; while doubts over Samuel Umtiti’s suspect knee could lead Barca to consider offers for the Frenchman.

IN: De Ligt.

OUT: Vermaelen, Murillo, Umtiti.

MIDFIELD

Having strengthened heavily in the middle with the likes of Arthur and Arturo Vidal last season, Barcelona will be looking primarily to trim their numbers rather than reinforce this summer.

Frenkie de Jong is already on his way to Camp Nou and is likely to be the only high-profile midfield arrival, unless the exit of one of the club’s stars funds further activity. Going the other way could be Denis Suarez and Rafinha, although Barca will have to find suitors willing to meet the pair’s asking price of €10-15 million.

Barcelona are also prepared to listen to offers for Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Rakitic. The Brazilian has struggled to impress since his blockbuster transfer from Liverpool, while Rakitic is now on the wrong side of 30.

Both could leave, though much depends on what interest emerges from the market over the next few months.

IN: De Jong (confirmed).

OUT: Rakitic, Coutinho, D. Suarez, Rafinha.

ATTACK

A quality centre-forward who is ready to challenge Luis Suarez for a starting spot and also grow in the future is Barca’s sole priority in their offensive line. Their options, however, are thin on the ground.

President Jose Bartomeu is the only man pushing for Antoine Griezmann’s arrival from Atletico Madrid, the rest of the Barca board wary after last summer’s soap opera. No move will be made for the Frenchman until July 1 in any case, when his release clause from Atletico decreases to €120 million (£110m/$140m).

Elsewhere, Frankfurt’s Luka Jovic has been ruled out as too expensive, leading to a €25m offer for Celta’s Uruguayan forward Maxi Gomez.

The possibility of bringing in a more experienced face – a gamble that paid off handsomely with Henrik Larsson back in 2004, and rather less so with Kevin-Prince Boateng this season – is also being considered.

Another Uruguayan, Girona veteran Cristhian Stuani, Sevilla’s Wissam Ben Yedder and Fernando Llorente of Tottenham are all potential fits for that role, with each of the trio a proven Liga goalscorer.

So far there is just one forward who is almost certain not to line up at Camp Nou next season: Boateng, who did little to convince Barca of his talents during his brief stay.

IN: Griezmann, Gomez, Stuani, Ben Yedder, Llorente.

OUT: Boateng.

Union Berlin promoted to Bundesliga for first time as Stuttgart are relegated

After missing out on automatic promotion by goal difference, the club will take their place in the top flight after winning the tie on away goals

Union Berlin have been promoted to the Bundesliga for their first time in their history after a 0-0 draw in their relegation play-off second leg sent Stuttgart down.

The two teams played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Mercedes-Benz Arena on Thursday and the 2. Bundesliga side held firm in the reverse fixture on Monday to win promotion on away goals and relegate their visitors.

Urs Fischer’s side had missed out on automatic promotion to Paderborn on the final day of the season by goal difference and was forced to battle Stuttgart, who finished 16th in the top-flight on just 28 points.

However, Union shrugged off that disappointment to overcome a Stuttgart outfit who return to the second tier after two seasons in the Bundesliga.

Nico Willig’s men thought they had forged ahead after nine minutes but Dennis Aogo’s free-kick was ruled out by a VAR review as an offside Nicolas Gonzalez was adjudged to have impeded the goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz’s view.

Stuttgart continued to do most of the pressing in the opening period, with Anastasios Donis flashing a low effort wide from inside the six-yard box and Gikiewicz pawing away Steven Zuber’s long-range drive.

The hosts belatedly woke from their slumber after the interval and twice came agonisingly close to taking the lead shortly after the hour.

Suleiman Abdullahi crashed a left-footed effort off Ron-Robert Zieler’s post and then just a minute later the Nigerian hit the same upright after latching onto a long ball.

Stuttgart almost preserved their Bundesliga status at the death but Gikiewicz flew to his left to keep out Benjamin Pavard’s half-volley, the Bayern Munich-bound full-back unable to prevent his team from being relegated in his final game as the home supporters celebrated on the pitch at the full-time whistle.

Instead it will be Union, who end their 10-year run in the second division with their first-ever Bundesliga status in the club’s history.

They will join Koln, who returned to the top-flight after a one-year absence, and Paderborn in the Bundesliga next season.

Meanwhile Stuttgart head down alongside Hannover and last-place finishers Nurnberg.

Man Utd have always lost out on big players – Neville on De Ligt

The ex-United skipper says the club missed out on top stars even at the height of their success, and he is in no rush for them to return to the top

Manchester United legend Gary Neville says it is nothing new for the club to miss out on major talent in the transfer market and he is “not in a rush” to see them winning the game’s biggest trophies again.

United look set to miss out on Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt, with the 19-year-old Dutchman thought to have an agreement with Barcelona, but Neville insists that such near-misses in the transfer market happened even when the Red Devils were ultra-successful under Sir Alex Ferguson.

“I think United can still attract top-end players because we’ve seen good players come to the club over the last six or seven years,” said Neville after taking part in the match celebrating the 20th anniversary of United’s 1999 treble win.

“This club will never move away from being a sensational football club, it will have difficult moments and it’s having a difficult time now.

“The money in the game now means you’re always in competition. The club has lost players when it’s been successful to Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. It lost Robben to Chelsea in the mid-2000s, we lost Nasri to City, don’t always think that when Sir Alex Ferguson was here it didn’t happen.

“This club lost players when it was successful to some of the biggest clubs in Europe that are competing with United. Don’t think that if United lose players now to Barcelona that this is the first time it’s ever happened, it’s happened before.

“It’s not because of the current plight, or the coach, or the manager, or the current players. It just happens sometimes. It happened during successful times too.”

United’s legends side beat their Bayern Munich counterparts 5-0 in the charity fixture for the Manchester United Foundation, with current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer netting the opening goal.

And Neville added that one of Solskjaer’s purported targets, Crystal Palace full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, is exactly the type of player United should be courting.

“He’s a massive talent and the club, to be fair, have always signed young, emerging British talent and I don’t think that should change, and it would seem to me that the club would like to go back down that route and he [Wan-Bissaka] is one.

“The price is always going to be big because clubs are wise now to it, you can’t pinch players off clubs for £5m or £6m. They are wise to it and have the Premier League funding of £100-odd million so they don’t need to panic, they don’t need extra £5m or £10m, they want £50m or £60m.

“As long as they sign the right talent, I’m always encouraged,” the former right-back continued. “I’m also encouraged by the fact that Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Scott McTominay are playing.

“I’m encouraged by the fact the club are giving opportunities to young players, even in these times because for me that’s something that’s part of Manchester United’s history, it’s what Manchester United is.  You just have to sign the right players and give them the platform to perform and the belief and opportunity.

“I’m not in a rush with Manchester United, I don’t have to see them be successful in the next 10 minutes.  As long as the principles are right, play good football, bring the right players through, try and win as best you can, don’t give in, good attitude… and for me I can wait for two, three, four, five years for the club to be successful. It isn’t a problem for me.

“I lived through 20 years as a fan when I was growing up where the club wasn’t successful. I’m not in a rush I just want to see the right things happen and with Ole here as a coach there’s an opportunity for that to happen.”

Kane makes the cut but no place for Trippier in England Nations League roster

The Three Lions captain has declared himself fully fit and made Southgate’s squad but a pair of his Tottenham team-mates missed out

England boss Gareth Southgate has included skipper Harry Kane in his 23-man squad ahead of next month’s UEFA Nations League finals – but there is no place for his Tottenham team-mates Kieran Trippier and Harry Winks.

Kane has not kicked a ball since injuring his ankle against Manchester City on April 9, however the striker has declared himself fully fit ahead of the Champions League final against Liverpool on Saturday.

Kane said he could play in the final “today” , but his involvement with England will no doubt be dictated by how much game time he gets against the Reds in the Madrid showcase this weekend.

Southgate, however, has chosen not include Trippier and Winks in his final squad for the games against the Netherlands and Portugal or Switzerland, as he culled the group from an initial pool of 27.

Southampton pair James Ward-Prowse and Nathan Redmond were the other casualties from his original squad announcement.

Trippier’s form has dipped somewhat in recent months, with the right-back struggling to maintain the levels he reached in an England shirt at last summer’s World Cup, while Winks is still recovering from a groin operation.

“We have got exciting players,” said Southgate, “and picking a squad is really difficult because we have lots of depth of talent, not only the squad we have picked but the Under-21s as well.

“There has been some difficult decisions to make and we are obviously a little bit complicated with so many players involved in the Champions League as well, but we are really excited by the squad and the players that are around it.”

The form of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kyle Walker has influenced the manager’s thinking in terms of Trippier’s omission.

When asked about the 28-year-old’s absence, Southgate said: “Of course, Kieran Trippier has had such a big impact, and he had such a brilliant World Cup.

“He has been a really valuable member of our squad, has a great attitude with us and real passion in playing for England, but Trent (Alexander-Arnold) and Kyle (Walker) have finished the season so strongly.

“So it is a position where we have got real competition for places. That is as hard a decision as we have had to make.”

Here is the England roster in full:

GOALKEEPERS

Jack Butland (Stoke City), Tom Heaton (Burnley), Jordan Pickford (Everton)

DEFENDERS

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Ben Chilwell (Leicester City), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Michael Keane (Everton), Harry Maguire (Leicester City), Danny Rose (Tottenham), John Stones (Manchester City), Kyle Walker (Manchester City)

MIDFIELDERS

Dele Alli (Tottenham), Ross Barkley (Chelsea), Fabian Delph (Manchester City), Eric Dier (Tottenham), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Jesse Lingard (Manchester United), Declan Rice (West Ham)

FORWARDS

Harry Kane (Tottenham), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Jadon Sancho (Borussia Dortmund), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Callum Wilson (AFC Bournemouth).

Soto brace leads United States to important U-20 World Cup victory over Nigeria

The Hannover forward was inserted into the starting XI and proved decisive in the victory

Sebastian Soto’s brace was the difference as the United States secured an important victory over Nigeria in the Under-20 World Cup.

The U.S. entered the contest off a 2-1 defeat to Ukraine in their opening game in Group D.

With Nigeria having secured a 4-0 victory over Qatar in their opener, and Ukraine defeating the Asian nation earlier in the day, Tab Ramos’ U.S. side knew defeat would put them in a difficult spot for qualification to knockout stages of the competition.

But the U.S. enjoyed a strong effort from the early going, and unlike in their opener, that lead directly to an advantage.

Soto, inserted into the starting lineup after coming on as a substitute in the U.S. opener, got free on a corner kick in the 18th minute, slamming home a header off Alex Mendez’s delivery to give his side a 1-0 advantage.

While the U.S. remained on top for much of the first half, they were unable to extend their advantage.

It appeared the U.S. had found the net again later in the half, only for it to be ruled out due to Timothy Weah being offside in the build up.

Nigeria enjoyed a spell of dominance after the ruled out goal, with Maxwell Effiong striking the crossbar with a brilliant drive from distance and Jamil Muhammed testing U.S. goalkeeper Brady Scott.

But Nigeria were unable to find an equalizer and the U.S. would waste no time in the second-half giving itself a measure of breathing room.

Off the second-half kickoff, Chris Gloster burst forward on the left and found Soto making a run in behind. The Hannover forward was able to slot it past Olawale Oremade to double the U.S. advantage.

However, the match got nervy for the USYNT as the second half progressed.

Mark McKenzie, in for the injured Chris Richards just minutes earlier, conceded a penalty in the 64rd minute, barging into Kingsley Michael.

However, on Video Assistant Review, it was determined Nigeria was offside in the build up, so the penalty was waved off.

The victory leaves the U.S. still third in the group on goal differential, but will be in fine position to advance to the knockout stages.

Tab Ramos’ side will be heavy favorites to defeat Qatar in the group stage finale on Thursday, with the Asian nation losing both their games by a combined 0-5 scoreline.

The top two teams from the group automatically qualify, but the four highest third-placed finishers will also make the knockout round.
